When I bought it it came with an overhauled Automatic gearbox..
I noticed the torque converter wasn't locking up so took it back under the 2 year 40,000km warranty. They agreed to have a look. But not keen to stop at pulling the torque converter to see if the rebuilt unit is faulty.
They've had it over 4 days now and even had it to PCB Land Rovers for diagnosis.
Tried:
Reset TCU - No change
Plugged in and said stuck solenoid
Pulled Valve body, check solenoid (ok) disassembled valve body (ok)
PCB said temp sensor - No change
Swapped Valve body - No change
Next step:
tap into wire to see if TCU is triggering
Swap TCU
Not sure if to be ****ed off with Car or Workshop. :(

The only reset you can do on the Auto ECU is reset adaptive settings. Which should only be done when a new box is fitted as it adjusts itself at a known rate (also based on feedback) to allow for wear.
They seem to have been covering all the bases, autos are a black art and the information on a fault doe not always point to the cause. Just the problem.

I just read somewhere that there is a rear temp sensor on the rear LH/Passenger side of the auto.
Can anyone confirm this???
I think there were a couple of loose wires there somewhere..
More Info.....
"There is also another temp sensor located on the back of the transmission (driver's side ( our passenger side LH)). Easy to get to and may have been affected if you were in deep water. Try unplugging it and see if your light goes out. I would start there first as the one on the cooler is a bit harder to get at."

I can't confirm your comments, I can, however, confirm that the ECU won't lock up the converter when the transmission temp is too cold.
Cheers

that sensor is for the transfer case, not the auto trans. it is parralelled with the auto trans cooler sensor and usually only fitted to v8 models.

Thanks Justin and Keithy.. :)
One thing they did say over the phone (from what I can remember) was that the lockup servo on the diagnostics said open then closing but did go to closed??

Would have thought they'd tested the ecu out puts before changing the valve body. ..
There's no way they can monitor the line pressure to confirm the solonoid is working?

The TC not locking is only a TD5 thing---

They have had two test kits connected to check out the TCU.
I think there is a bolt they can tap into for line pressure. They are the specialists so they should know.
I have also read rebuilt converters giving problems.. :(

Spoke to them today.
The Disco and it's electronics, valve body, solenoid all check out OK.
Only thing left is their rebuilt Torque Converter, so it comes out tomorrow...

Checked out the harness round the back of the gearbox for bad insulation, worn through patches etc? Can cause all sorts of issues.

Hi Trev,
Lucky for me the electrics all checked out (well they did find a couple of suspect areas and re-tapped them - No Fix) and they found the lockup solenoid power signal was working as advertised...

Give TCT torque converters Springvale a call, they do a low stall heavy duty ( Modified v8, similar to Ashcrofts). Just fitted one to a mates td5, well worth it. You should be able to tell if the lock up clutch has been slipping, oil will be brown or black looking, bad smell. Will be fitting one to mine once I forget what a mongrel job it is.
Cheers Greg

Do low stall converters work on standard motors? I thought they were only for stage 1 and up TD5's?
I doubt they will do that as it is a Warranty job. But I can keep it mind if they have a problem - Thanks PS how much are they?

Worked fine on this one much better to drive, (standard map). Although his was a reco converter from Queensland, lock up clutch was toast. Reminds me, must give Tombie a call, and see if I can talk him into selling me a map for it. P.S Haven't seen a bill yet but quote for converter was around $650- $700

Do low stall converters work on standard motors? I thought they were only for stage 1 and up TD5's?My TD5 is stock with a low stall converter, no problems at all.
The converter in mine was fitted by Fluid drive in Bendigo, Im not sure if Fluid drive in Melbourne modify these themselves or source them somewhere.
(Had to wait for it to arrive)
From memory I was told the outer converter wasn't any bigger ( not even from a landrover, holden i think) the inside fins/turbine changed to give a lower stall, billet spline plus wider area on the lock-up clutch.
Seems to work well, changes at much Lower revs which suits the TD5.
Ashcroft uses the medium instead of small LR TC for the TD5 which is why stage 1 is recommended for his

My Disco is back on the road and the torque converter now locks up... :)
Pretty happy but found a couple of issues from the gearbox coming out.
Auto Gearbox Over Temp Light flashed on and off a couple of times as I accelerated hopefully just a dangling wire underneath I taped up, transfer case temp wire I guess, hope.
Found a plug with a loop (looks like it) hanging down near the front drive shaft so tucked it up.
Found Centre diff lock switch terminal broken off. I pulled the broken terminal out of the connecter so it didn't touch anything and ordered a new switch.

Now that the loose terminals are taped up the Auto Temp Light has stopped flashing. :)
Now back to driving the wheels off it.. :D
