Hey guys, just wondering what the major differences better the tdi300 and the td5 is and is it worth spending a bit more and buying a series 2 disco or a defender with a td5 or just buying one with a tdi?

That really depends on your budget, if you only have 10k then you are limited to a TDI. That are pretty much chalk and cheese, mechanically injected pushrod 4cyl V electro mechanical injected OHC 5 cyl with ECU .
The prices difference in a disco is only a few K but defender is more like 10-15K difference.

Having owned both td5 all he way :D a lot better than the d1 more power , much better acceleration , and for towing much better than the tdi also the td5 d2 has a lot more features and is a slightly larger vehicle .drive both you'll quickly see the difference :D

Its horses for courses, actually, and depending on who you ask you will get totally different opinions on it. I personally would prefer the Tdi, but it comes down to what you want to pay, what you want to do with it and how much you will be working on it yourself.
I have one of each in my trucks, the Tdi never missed a beat in all the 19 years in the truck (18 of which in my custody). It returns great economy too. On the other hand, it might feel somewhat agricultural to some (but I don't care). Parts, if needed, are relatively cheap. Regular cambelt change is a must.
The Td5 is a much more modern engine, but by today's standards trailing behind anyway. It is more advanced, is controlled by a little black box (something that annoys me really), parts are usually more expensive and I find it less easy to work on. On the plus side, it is more powerful, more cultivated, easier in daily driving and can be chipped for better performance (if you are into this). No cambelt change needed here.
There were a few issues on both engines when they were new but these should have been sorted out already ages ago. The "newest" Tdi-powered vehicle will now be in its 16th year and with a Td5 it should be 8 years at least, so most of the serious issues will hopefully have been addressed already.
As a sum up, it's horses for courses, basically.
Cheers

Depends what you want. The 300Tdi is simpler to maintain and repair, which is why overlanders and armies prefer it, but is not powerful, although it goes fast enough. The Td5 is much more advanced, but also more electronic.

I have one of each, 300Tdi Defender and a D2. D1 is likely to be your cheapest option although likely to have a few km on the vehicle now. The D2 or a Td5 Defender will pull harder and is more refined, at least in the D2.

I would not swap engines in my vehicles, the Defender and the 300Tdi go together and if I want something more refined I don't think that a Td5 Defender will have much on the D2. It really comes down to what you want the vehicles for.
