Need help guys.
My d3s tdv6 manual overheats when towing our jayco eagle outback. It only overheats when u when go up hill the gauge just spikes straight into the red u get the top of the hill it comes straight down to we're it sits normally on half way of the temp gauge on the flats it's fine.
Any help would get

My last car, a Pajero had exactly the same sort of symptoms when I used to tow a 6.5 metre boat. It ended up being the a combination of things in the cooling system and I eventually had a top radiator hose blow - would you believe 2 days before I had the car booked in for this issue to be looked at. It came on gradually over time and I had no problems when I didn't tow a heavy load up steep hills/mountains. Ended up needing a new radiator, water pump and hose of course. The mechanics, local guys who I trust implicitly, had a devil of a time diagnosing the water pump. The impeller was actually slipping on the drive shaft and this caused fluctuating temperatures all over the engine. They used a sensor of some sort to check the temp in various parts of the engine to make sure it was ok. As you can imagine it wasn't cheap as the repairs meant taking the front of the car off basically.
My suggestion would be to get the cooling system checked out by someone you trust sooner rather than later. I was lucky not to have blown the engine as the gauge was misleading - something to do with water being pumped around and covering the temp sensor and then you run on empty without realising. One final thing. Apparently modern hoses don't show signs of failure like the old rubber ones did. I had the bottom hose go 2 months later. They said that they don't replace parts if the are not faulty but with hoses they look ok until they fail. In hindsight, if I had known that I would have told them to replace all the hoses.

I would start with checking the viscous coupling fan pretty easy job.

Replace the thermostat for starters as its typical behaviour of one that's sticking.

If it is an actual heating problem wouldn't there be codes and the EML showing up - there is another current thread which indicates it is almost impossible to overheat a TDV6 as the engine will go into reduced performance before damage is done.

Check that the electrical over-ride for the viscous fan is working. When you start it first time in the morning, you should hear the fan roar as it goes through it's checking sequence.
It's easy to think the fan is working normally because of the viscous coupling, but this is not enough to cool the system when under load.

I be cleaned all the electrical contacts on viscas fan I do here the fan kick in the moring but have fault codes come up on the dash and aim not losing all collent

To go in another direction, do you use a Stonestomper or a large mudflap system when towing. Is your Disco fitted with a bullbar and winch ?

No I use no stone stomper I got arb bullbar And no winch

It could mean the electrical over-ride for the viscous fan is not working.

Bit late on this one but to me typical symptoms of a fan problem, if you don't hear it do it's thing in the morning, then that should be first port of call.
