View Full Version : Is this a bit excessive?

While bored, I counted up that The Navigator and I have six computers (five laptops and a tablet) between the two of us (not counting smartphones). That means we have two computers for each of our three children.
Our children, who do not live at home, would have at least six computers between them.
Does this seem a bit excessive, or are we typical, having twice as many computers as children? Have computers already taken over the world (except our old Disco 1).

No they build up if they don't break.
We have 2 desktops, one never used as to old and stacked in cupboard next to it is the other old laptop that works but again to old and overheats on basic stuff. In use we have 1 desktop, 2 laptops, an iPad, 2 iPods, a tablet, + the usual smart phones.5 kids 2 adults.
One suggestion , you most likely only use 2-3 of them, back the others up before packing away as if the hard drive dies all that info is lost. A 1-2 Tera hard drive in a box is pretty cheap these days.

Why pack them away?
If you aren't using them, clear them of private data and donate them...

Hoarding is crazy... And we all seem to do it...

All my units are in use...

That it is my approach Tombie, there are many old folks that do not have the money to purchase a computer and do not have the health to go to the local public library. They would love to have an old PC and it is good for their mental health (as long as they do not get into AULRO's Cantina :D )

Just sounds like you are a hoarder. It's OK to throw the old ones out when they are replaced you know....

how about printers?

we had 4 here at one stage, 2 kind of died.

we bought a new one last week for $35....it does everything.

when the ink cartridges run out , we have already calculated that it will be cheaper to buy another printer than refill the ink.

crazy world.....

Bugger, I never thought of that.
Be cheaper even after paying petrol for 80 klm round trip to get new one.

Actually, I just remembered another old one that's stacked away in a cupboard, so that's 7 for 2 people.
You're right about the backups - I have one.
We only have one printer as the non-working ones were turfed ages ago.

And therein lies the problem!
Tec stuff goes out of date so quickly.
My lap top is 4 years old, our phones are 2 years old, my wife's LT is 5 years old, even the Nexus I bought at the start of last year has been relegated to the land of "out-dated!"
So all our, not really cheap, Tec stuff is out of date.
Well, it can stay out of date, it works, I know how to work 90% of it & I get sick of spending money this stuff just to be up to date.
I'm out dated anyway so my tec & I go together.

We have 1 laptop, 1 mac mini, 1 ipadthingy, and 2 phones. I run my computers until the die, dump, then buy a new one. I don't see the point of having an old one that still runs sitting... if it ain't broke don't fix it!

CISS only good for inkjets I assume (by definition)?
I went mad and bought a colour laser - mainly for the grandies homework and SWMBOs study projects. Cartridges are not cheap, but do last well.

Nah, they're Androids. I object to Apple's closed shop policy.

Not if you jump on ebay and find DIY re-ink kits for your cartridges and follow the you tube tutorials.

YOU WILL SAVE A FORTUNE AND STOP CONSUMING PRINTERS!

ummm , the 2 that died had hardware problems, not ink.
