View Full Version : GoVia weirdness results in Defender owner's shame

Yep I have my Defender on my GoVia account. For some reason it would not allow me (or them) to link the tag to my vehicle.
Turns out that Qld Transport has the Defender as a "Class 3" vehicle, when in fact it is a "Class 2". As Go Via cant change this the only way they can get around it is to list the vehicle as something else in the right class. Its only the number plate / etoll tag details which have to be correct.
Where's the shame?
On my toll account my Defender is shown as a... gulp.... "Freelander"
During the course of our conversation the GoVia lad did say "There's not much difference between those Land Rovers anyway"
I think the confusion is really with the 130. I reckon if she changed it to a 110 the problem would go away, but she chose to do it this way..... aarrggghhh.

No it wouldn't, I did a whole thread on this a couple of years ago when I got my 110.
It boils down to them not having air bags and therefore are put down as commercial vehicles for import purposes. THAT IS THE BASICS, IF YOU HAVE A BETTER EXPLANATION PLEASE DONT SHOT ME DOWN.
Anyway, they argued the GVM with me and insisted that with that amount of GVM it could could only be a commercial truck which is why they must have defenders down as commercial. This I soon shot down with other 4x4 brand GVM examples. In the end I sent them a copy of the rego stating, private use 5 door wagon and a photo of Boomer. They finally gave me a car tag, but I drive a nothing/purpose built private vehicle:D
The air bag thing came from my mate in the traffic branch who is now a member of the GCLRO and knows a fair bit about LR's. For the past 20 years I've know him he has always been called Rover. He said they would have gone off a list of vehicles dealer imported. This list would have shown my model Defender, 98, as commercial. Otherwise it could not be imported without airbags, basic information only.

By that logic I should be able to park in loading zones, but good luck with that (at least in NSW)
(Not arguing with you, just the lunacy of some government regulations)

Hi,
In Tas my D130cc would be registered as a commercial vehicle normally, but I get it at a cheaper pensioner's rate by declaring it is not used to carry commercial loads.
I got a refund of a few dollars after finding I was being taxed as a 5cyl engine as stated by the official vehicle inspection garage folk who did the paper work.
Guess they weren't familiar with the Puma.
The whole registration/insurance algorithm is all very silly - it needs a complete re-think.
cheers

Sounds like when I first insured my s2. They couldn't find a listing for land rover despite having my fathers s3 I surance as a reference. So a note was made on the policy that it was a land rover and the guy listed it as the cheqpest thing he could find. A Volvo!
