Illegal bullbars on Highway's radar | Daily Liberal (http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/story/2109646/illegal-bullbars-on-highways-radar/)
I don't have a problem with crack downs on illegal bullbars, and I think if you're running a 5 poster for your multi-nightly drag up and down the main street then you're a straight up Tosser,
Show me a bullbar on your average 4X4 or ute that weighs 500kg :D

Not surprised about the whole Dubbo thing:D
This unique creation was a Dubbo deluxe:eek:, now thankfully replaced with a proper bar...

This is funny.
"He said the imposing "five poster" bullbar, illegal on all models made after 2002, was more likely to push a pedestrian under a car to their death."
What's the number of posts got to do with it?
I'm for bull bars in some cases. I've done multiple trips out past Dubbo to Broken hill and Bourke. Also lost count years ago of how many roos I've hit and touch wood, I've never hit a pig or cattle. Oh I've hit a sheep but that was in WA and I have nudged cattle but that was in the paddock.
Of all of Australia the worst I've seen has been that Bourke, Cobar, Broken Hill triangle.
Bull Bars have there place. I don't know what the point of the centre post is on a 5 poster but that dozer blade shape helps stop the roos coming up on the bonnet.
Touch wood, I've never hit a pedestrian so I don't know how one would fair.
Happy Days.

Always fun to hear the opinions of Harold Scrubby. Anything other then a good pair of loafers, and Mr Scrubby will be preaching about the death and disfigurement that will ensue if if his voice is not headed.
Got sick of hearing the rubbish he preaches when I road motorbikes.

Surely a decent cross bar will do the same and many have them there for the light mounts anyway.

Some of the roads north have no fences [ Burke development road], cattle wander around freely, I try to drive during the daylight hours. Unfortunately , with the drought, even fences aren't keeping them in. The road from Goomeri to Gayndah often has cattle on the side of the road, trying to get a green pick. In some cases they break thru the fence, unpredictable beggers. Slow speed for me is the key, my ARB bullbar may not save the car , if one decides to play chicken, but hopefully we'll walk away. Bob

:coplight:Not getting into rights and wrongs, or the aesthetics of a huge five poster on a Falcon ute :spudnikhurler:, the law :rulez:is that:
1. :nazilock:There can be no forward projections. Fishing rod holders are allowed as long as fishing rods are being carried in them but otherwise must be removed.
2. :nazilock:On 2wds, the bar must follow the line of the vehicle, i.e. be at a rearward angle.
3. :nazilock:For trucks and 4wds, the bar can be vertical but can under no circumstances be angled forward.

Ha, indeed.
Whoever designed it and thought it was a good thing probably shears their sheep with a whipper snipper.
I've seen a few on Hiluxes where the doors hit the side bars.
Its a fair bet you'd get a positive result if you drug tested owners of these things.

It's pretty obvious that the reporter of that artical has no clue and has taken comments made about 5 poster bullbars and gone off and posted a picture of a very legal bullbar for his artical, thus informing the already stupid public into thinking that cars with this bullbar are breaking the law.

I agree with the rod holder issue. I walked into mine a couple of times when first purchased many years ago & being a fast learner ;) mine are either removed or tilted 90° behind the bar. I've got them tightened so they don't move when loaded but can rotate them when needed.
My holders are wearing thin on the inside front tubing & look a bit daggy from use but to see some of the shiny ones on "shopping trolleys" you'd swear they hadn't seen a fishing rod! I don't even see the reason for having them on if only used a couple of times a year?? A bit like driving to the local BWS with an orange handled shovel strapped to the roof rack/ spare tyre I suppose!

But Dubbo has a Catchment population of 130,000. Bathurst is home for me its definitely smaller but has a population of 33,000 the difference is the catchment. I suspect Bendigo would be in a similar boat.

I could cut the deaths by 20%, don't drink and walk!
A recent study and ad campaign was in direct conflict with another campaign as 20% of pedestrians killed where under the influence of grog. This conflicted with the "plan B" adds that show one of the options to "BE" walking home.:D
Another way to reduce the deaths is a Directional all (phone/radio/music stream)channel incoming alarm broadcast so that it gets louder as you get closer to the pedestrian wandering in La La land with their iPhone/pod/mobile plugged into their ears. An electronic "roo shoo" that actually works.
The only illegal thing on the disco in the articles pic was the rod holders, and the 4-5 utes in the other pic where all legal as the big 5 posters where all on pre 2002 models. The white IFS hilux might get a fine for only 1 spot.

Aesthetics aside Tuff Bullbars claim that they comply with regulations on their web site. I'm a bit stumped where you could get an illegal bullbar from anyway. I doubt an engineering works would make you one that is not legal, they would be liable. That only leaves second hand units and the amount of effort to make / modify an old style bullbar to fit a modern car would not be worth it. Sounds like a slow news day and the Dubbo coppers are raising public awareness. I imagine that they would be targeting fishing pole holders and lights mounted on top of the bar in reality.

When I was with Baja Racks we were selling the Stealth bullbar for FJCruiser that weighed 120Kg or so.
When I asked the customer whether they realised that they would have to upgrade the front suspension most didn't care.
I told our dealer in Perth who was a suspension shop and he assured me that nobody made a front suspension for FJ cruiser that could take that weight.
Knowing the history of Prados with bullbars I had real reservations in even offering them but the boss would take orders and then get them from the USA.

Funny you mention upgrading the suspension to compensate for the extra weight of the bull bar. I was told about 20 years ago that Toyota would void any suspension warranty if you fitted a bull bar.
I work for a government agency and spend a lot of time driving dirt tracks that get a little impassable in the wet season up here in Darwin. We are only close to town so its not too much of a worry getting bogged unless we have to be somewhere else in a hurry. Our vehicle guy knows stuff all about cars so when anything is ordered he has no idea. We have super winches on all or vehicle and only 1 out of 3 work mainly due to being submerged in muddy water daily. So if your in a vehicle without a winch that's not working most people take a bigger run up than you usually would just to be sure you make it through to the other side. Then comes the problem that the ruts are deep enough that the vehicles belly out. Not surprising since they all have standard suspension with winches and bull bars. One of the vehicle was in getting some work done recently and the workshop told our management that the under carriage was about the worst they had seen and the vehicle had less than 10,000km on it. Then they complain that they have to keep replacing number plates but continue to fit them the same way with only screws in the top and nothing to hold the bottom down. Anyone who has driven through water knows it will lift a number plate real quick.
Happy Days.

That could be pretty appropriate.
Anyone who fits one of these things to a vehicle is a something that rhymes with "tanker".
