I am about to order a front (Rover) diff for my 110 PUMA, complete bolt in centre from Ashcroft Transmissions. It will have the HD crown wheel and pinion and the famous Ashcroft air-locker centre.

Dave has asked me do I want it "pegged" . I understand what pegging is but not sure how essential it is.

So do I ?

Is it essential for the strength and longevity of the rover diff or more of modification for extreme off roading ?

Thoughts and opinion welcome.

Designed for extreme offroading/running larger rubber. Ie rock crawling where shock loads are common

Pegging helps to reduce the flex between crown wheel and pinion.

If it did not cost a lot then why not consider it. Pegging prevents the crown wheel from deflecting from the pinion under extreme load.

Generally you'd have to be hammering it to cause this, but with a PUMA in Low range 1st gear there is tons of torque, hang a decent trailer of the back of your Fender and you might be surprised at the loading you'd get on a steep driveway. that extra peace of mind might be worth a few $$$.

My front Ashcroft ATB is pegged in my 110 - hard to see how making things a bit stronger at little cost isn't something worth doing?

Doesn't that depend on how much it costs? ;)

Having said that now I am curious - what is ballpark $ on getting the dif pegged?

I elected to peg my front diff when I installed the locker, I figured that I would make the driveline as strong as I reasonably could, and can approach all my offroad driving with confidence. Not very expensive to do.

The cost is listed on Ashroft's website...

Thanks for the replies. It makes good sense with making the diff as strong as possible.

The cost is 120GBP ($200AUD) as they building the centre from scratch.

Looks like I will be finalising my order, pegging included, tonight.

Hi

For that price you've done the right thing.
I've been running a pegged front diff with 35" rubber for 4 years without a problem.
