View Full Version : I'm in; No more dreamin!

Hi All,
Well after about three years (two as a member) fossicking through this great forum and dreaming of the day, I am finally biting the bullet and am in the final process of fine tuning a novated lease on a D4. I have learnt a great deal about this vehicle, which on occasions has worried me; but the knowledge and experiences over time of overcoming and understanding various little bugs (the double contact brake light switch fault is one that comes to mind) this forum has given me the confidence to become a proud owner of the prestigious Discovery 4. I haven't even driven one yet! That will come tomorrow I hope and I'm sure I'll be super impressed.
What I am looking at is a 2013/2014 Discovery D4 HSE, in only Nara Bronze (or Havana), optioned with Electronic Rear Differential and Surround Camera System or Vision Assist Pack. I would sacrifice the e-diff (undecided) if other options sweetened the deal and fit within my budget; Upgrade to Premium Sound system (825W 17 speaker) & to satisfy the other half & youngen, the Rear Seat Entertainment (a rip off at $4,100 as an option IMHO) I'd rather go aftermarket for half the price.
What I would like to know as I can't seem to decide from threads read about it is this; Is the E-diff really worth the wait for a 'build' vehicle? I have been patient and can still be. It was mentioned in other threads that the TR system was improved in the MY13 model to the point that it might not be as necessary. Obviously lose the Off Road screen info, which I think is nice but somewhat gimmicky. I don't see myself taking the muddiest bog hole route and treating her like a busted ass Tojo, but would like to know that if it is a great help (like air lockers) then I do have it fitted for when called upon. Sort of answering this myself. All other accessories will come in the years to follow so I don't pay LCT on them (Side bars first (for car parks),Bull bar/Winch, GOE 18's, dual battery, roof rack) Thoughts anyone? Sorry about the long spiel.

The E diff is worth every dollar, had two discos first one didn't have it 2nd one has and its the best option they offer for the money by far! the extra 6 speakers over the std 11 supplied won't get you up that step, wet muddy trackā¦.

I had a similar dilemma - would have loved the E-Diff for the added off road ability but I thought to myself will I ever really need it? SWMBO is not well and we will not be going down any real rough stuff so in my case, I realized I could do without. Resale wasn't an issue as I keep cars for 10 years plus. Bought mine November last year when they had the runout sale with factory cash bonus on offer. Bought an HSE so it's got a load of goodies. Took one in stock and had it in two weeks as the dealer had to get it from interstate. The other thing was my old car was sucking money like a wormhole so I was keen to get rid of it.
Bottom line IMHO is if you're happy to wait then why not? But for me the stars aligned so to speak. The car was available, I got a great deal, I got rid of my old clunker and for me E-Diff was a nice to have rather than a must have. From what I've read E-diff does make a magnificent 4wd into an awesome 4wd and the price is peanuts really. Why LR don't fit them as standard is beyond me though.

If your considering fitting these then I'd imagine you would want to take it where they are needed. If that is really the case then get the E-diff. If not then forget the GOE rims, winch etc as well since you're probably not going to need them either.
As accessories go, the E-diff is sensational value at ~$1000, still brings a smile to my face after ~3 years of ownership.

Hi Mungus,
The extra $1,050.00 that I paid for the e-diff when I purchased my $90K + Disco 4 was a no brainer as (so I believe) you cant add it later.
I sold the Disco at the beginning of last year. Had 3 calls in the first 3 days and the first caller was the one that bought it.
One thing that was important to him was the e-diff.
I believe that for re-sale.....its a must.
Cheers, Craig

I reckon its down to what you think your going to do with your vehicle. Personally I did not opt to wait for 6 months (at the time) for a vehicle build and was able to get almost everything I wanted in a vehicle from floor stock.
Like 'Letherm' its an individual call based on you projected needs.
Resale may or may not be a decision point but in my experience it matters little as I usually hold on to my vehicles. I still have my D2 10 years on.
I purchased a HSE off the floor in 2011 and have now travelled 85,000k with it and I am more than happy with the vehicle and its ability to do everything that I am likely to want of it! Mind you, had a similar vehicle with an e-diff been available I probably would have taken it!

I bought an MY12 SE with 14,000 k's on the clock. I do regret not having eDiff and high end sound.
In hindsight, I should have been more patient and waited, but once I got the "approval" and my circumstances were right, I grabbed what I could. I still love the vehicle but wish I had those extra goodies. Next vehicle will definitely have them.
If you ring around the dealers, they will know what's on the way and whether it has eDiff or not.

The three things I've really felt was worth the money:
1) e-diff (but I do take it off-road)
2) Vision Pack (Surround cameras have been invaluable, and I like the adaptive xenons)
3) Keyless entry
I decided against an upgraded sound system as the one in the HSE is more than good enough in a vehicle, as there is road and traffic noise; if I want great sound, I'd listen at home with my dedicated setup.

Thanks for the replies. Really appreciated! Decided e-diff is a definite. Also looking at changing from the surround camera system to the Vision Pack, as you get the cameras and also the adaptive headlights and high beam assist for an additional $600 outlay. Any comments on these?
Missed the last build apparently, so will be looking at around late July for delivery if I get onto it. Didn't drive one today, maybe tomorrow (work dependant), but it will be a TDV6. At least I'll get the handling/comfort feel from it. Now I need to get names of interstate dealers to price up. WA is first port of call as they do seem to be the cheapest online deals, then the other states. I'm a drummer so I do live for music, but I don't seem to turn my stereo up too loud in the VE and it's the ****ty stock system, so I think the 11 speaker 380W will do just fine. It's Meridian now I believe. Don't know much about them or HK but the impression I get is the 11spk, 380W is fairly decent. Is it actually 11 separate speakers or do they consider a two way as two and three way as three?

Have the Vision Pack, and as I said I wouldn't do without it. Auto high beam works well for me, but some people have problems with it. I personally find the adaptive xenons useful as we have a lot of roundabouts near home with less than brilliant street lighting.

Welcome to the world of the permagrin...when you look back at your car in the carpark, you can't help but smile and feel comfortable you made the right choice.😃
Yes, they have their quirks, but overall a wonderful piece of machinery that one minute is a luxury people carrier, the next a rough and tumble go anywhere tank.
I've never been a "car person" but this vehicle has blown my mind as to its versatility, and I love it.
Enjoy.

You'll be glad you ordered the E diff. I didn't realise how much difference it made until last September when we had the 20 or so D3/D4s at Newnes and I was able to see the differences in vehicles with and without.
I ordered my D3 with the Ediff and uprated sound and have found both to be well worth getting. The wait is worth it as well if you get exactly what you want in the colour you decide.

Can I just put in a vaguely dissenting voice on the e-Diff. I say vaguely because if I had my time againr of I was buying a new car I would order it with one. But if you decided you couldn't wait unless you are into the super extreme you really won't miss it too much if you don't have it. I don't and I have done quite a lot of offroad in all kinds of conditions and have never been stuck even when people with lesser cars have been. I have a winch and have never had to use it for a recovery because these cars TR is just so good even without the e-diff. ( but as I said if I was ordering again I would get it just because it is such good value)
Also I assume you are talking proper rock slider bars and not the LR side steps which are nice looking and handy for getting old people in and out of the car, but are just a liability in the bush.

I would have loved to get the 17 speaker system in my car but it comes standard in the HSE with the 11 speaker and from what i hear the system is so bloody awesome very very clear and good clean sounding bass to and I love my music to. I could only imagine how the 17 speaker system is, I've got the Harmin Kardon one and its amazing I've not heard to much about Meridian before until Land Rover and Jaguar switched over to it but I'm assuming it would be pretty similar to the HK one. From what i can see there is 1 speaker in the centre dash 2 door tweeters one near each A pillar and then 2 individual speakers in each of the 4 doors behind the grill, i could be wrong but i believe they are individual speakers from the brief look i had.

Understand the guys that say they cannot do without the ediff, but it comes down to how serious you are going with 4wd. I do a bit in the bush and the car is more than capable without it, and still leaves other marks in its wake.
If you are going serious with tyres, bar etc and regular 4Wding then it's probbaly worth it.
In relation to the entertainment system, look at this way $4k for in built rear entertainment which ultimately can only be used in the car and is restrictive. Or for $1k go and buy two ipads and two sets of decent headphones, you'll save a lot more money and have alot more flexibility with the kids.... or you can use the savings to pay for your ediff.:)

We're talking about a new D4 here right? The eLocker doesn't make any real-world difference in most off-roading that you'll do, unless you're seriously into rock-hopping. The caveat is that you need to really know how to use the TR.
On a D3 (or pre 2012 D4), it makes more difference.
The eLocker does of course, give you a heavy-duty rear set-up (axles and diff), which might be of benefit if you do heavy towing etc.
Cheers,
Gordon

Yes, proper rock sliders Andrew. Not sure which ones yet, but there is a fair few discussions on here about different manufacturers.

Well signed up and laid down a deposit today. Build sheet being sent off Monday for a July delivery. Build is as follows;
MY14D4 HSE in Nara Bronze
Active Rear Diff
Vision Assist (Surround cameras, Adaptive headlights & High Beam Assist)
Full rubber mats (Front, Second and Load space Cargo mat)
Carbon Window tint - 35% Front, 18% Rear - NT legal only)
2yr 200K Allianz extended warranty.
The wait is going to be painful.
Took a no frills TDV6 for a test drive as well. Man that throttle response delay would take some getting used to, as will the blinkers on the left side. Missed the first corner as I put the wipers on. ha-ha. Seemed to have enough grunt though once it was up and running, looking forward to the 3.0l.
One question though. It did seem a bit wallowy. Not a great deal and probably more noticeable as I am used to the sporty (low fully adjustable sports suspension and much stiffer), but will the HSE be a little stiffer?
We all joke about 200 series Tojo's handling like boats, but this thing was not far off. Would it have been the tyre size, suspension set of the base model or me just not being used to a larger, heavier vehicle.
I must admit though, I couldn't help but grin afterwards.

Congrats! Re the handling, it is the same for all models, I think you'll find that if went head to head with any other 4WD the disco will win hands down - no comparison. If you've come from driving what you say you have then everything is going to feel like a barge.
You wont notice the quirks after a short time.

Excellent choice on options. The wait will be agonising, but well worth it; it still enjoy driving mine after nearly a year.
There is a fix for the throttle response, the latest which works very well. Don't get it anymore (taking into account you are moving 2.5T).
The wallowing is a lot better than any real 4WD I've driven; it's not as planted as a sedan, but seeing how much braking some people do going around bends in my area, perhaps it's more planted than some sedans. The upside is the ride is much more comfortable, and the soundproofing is excellent (not sure if there is a difference between the TDV6 and the HSE).

I had a Pajero before which was supposed to have car like handling due to monocoque design and independent suspension. It handled very well, even around corners and bends. I felt that the D4, which I bought last November, wallowed a bit too when I first got it but it was really a feeling IMHO. It corners just as well as my old Pajero and I feel just as, if not more, confident in the D4 than the Pajero. Needless to say, everything else about the D4 is so much better than the Pajero from 4WD capability to comfort and specs. I too love getting in the D4 to drive and still occasionally just sit in it :p Really happy with it and yes, have that permagrin.

I am pretty confident (based on the many comments this forum and also many reviews I've read) it is as good, if not better than almost any other 4x4's of the same capability, size and weight and it is just me being used to the stiffness of my Sportwagon. It's adjustable setup I have at not far off a racetrack setup, going through corners dead flat. It will be sad to see my wagon sold as it has been a great fun car to own, but on to a more suitable, capable and comfortable D4 it is. Over all a good decision in our lives I reckon!

In the W4 challenge last year on one sharp turn out of the gully, up the hill climb, the elocker cost me 10 points. My D4 would not turn left, front wheels were turned, but the rear kept pushing her straight on. After the second time I hit the flag, I looked at the 4wd screen and saw it was on. I turned TR off, then she turned left....then re engaged mud and ruts. I would have come 2nd, but ended up 7th :-(
The only time it has let me down....she is not quite as smart as she thinks she is....but most of the time she is much smarter.
All other times, it has proved a little bit better having the elocker.

Hey Mungus, my delivery date is approx 7/6, but its not being built until early April - Australian allocation, or so I was told. I want my VIN too, but I can't get it until after its built, hopefully that want take too long.
As for the lag, seeing as though you have come from a petrol car that may be more pronounced, I test drove both a TDV6 & an SE & whilst the SE did accelerate quicker & so on, I didn't think there was a lot of difference in the initial reponse say from traffic lights etc between the two, of course overtaking speeds etc would be better in the SE with more power & torque.
As for the wallowy feeling, Im coming from a WJ/G Grand Cherokee with live axles at each end & although its not bad, the Discovery is night & day shades better.
But the wait is killing me, I had my dealer send me the build sheet on Thursday & although I ordered the e-diff, front sensors, Hi Line audio rear camera, privacy glass & wade sensor, the build sheet also included Blind spot monitoring, surround camera system, which are not on our contract or purchase price, so Im very interested to my VIN & check what exactly is on our car.

Tiddy, Was that the dealers build sheet they gave you or one from LR the dealer gave you? If it was the dealers sheet, you may be very lucky and get those few accidental extras. My dealer was very accurate about what was included in the deal, so I don't think I will be so lucky. VIN and Topix will tell all!
If the initial delay to throttle response is the same in mine, it won't take much to adapt driving style to compensate.
If the wallow (mostly cornering handling I refer) is a characteristic of luxurious comfort, then LAMMS on -20 should help with that a bit.
I'm not expecting the D4 to have sport car handling and acceleration response, just more of a note to self that it felt a little weird after hopping out of mine as one would expect.

The wait is so hard, you just feel I want my car haha. But I can assure you the wait is so bloody worth it!! They don't wallow that bad once you get used to them coming from a 150 prado I can assure you if you had your arm on the window of them you would near get gravel rash they are that wallowy. They are sublime car in all aspects quiet comfortable and so powerfu when it comes to overtaking I find drop back to 6th with the paddles and just feed it in and ride the torque curve they are great, plus the 11 speaker stereo is amazing to sounds great!!

Looked my VIN up on Track & Trace and then the ship on Live Ship Maps and apparently my D4 is on this boat called Toscana and landing in Melbourne on the 19th May after calling in to Perth. Bit different to the 11 weeks the dealer has told me? as I have mentioned in Tiddy's post 'Got my VIN'.
But it's built and on it's way. Yahoo!

Sold my car today. So I thought I'd check with the dealer, as I was of the understanding my D4 was offloaded in Melbourne last Monday 19th. Nope still on a ship. I was confused. Long story short, when I entered the last five numbers of my VIN into track & trace, there were about 30 results. So I picked the first one (exact five numbers I entered) and all the seemed to match up - ports of call etc... If I had looked down about 20 rows, I would have seen my full VIN No.
So heads up for Track & Trace - Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, enter your FULL VIN in the right field 'Cargo ID'. D4 is actually on the ship 'Morning Composer' due in Melbourne on the 16th June.

Well I finally have a D4. Waited a long time for this moment and I am thrilled to bits. Still has the hesitation/delay on initial application of accelerator, so I need to find out what that fix is? Wouldn't have thought one this new would have that. It is something that one could get used to, except it would be quite dangerous if you were caught out when trying to change lanes with a bit of throttle. Seems to wait then surges off more than desired. I'm sure it will be resolved and other than that one little thing the car is absolutely fantastic to drive. A big thank you to this forum and it's members for providing me with the in's and out's of a fantastic vehicle. Love it!

Congratulations !!! I'm sure you'll love it. I still love getting into mine after 7 months :)
I had a similar lag issue and got caught turning across traffic a couple of times with resultant heart failure  When I put it in for the 6 month service (I do a lot of small runs and wanted to change the oil to be on the safe side) I mentioned it to the service manager. When I got it back he said that they had adjusted the brake pedal. Apparently, if it's not adjusted correctly the computer thinks you've still got the brake on for a second and hesitates before taking off. Must admit it seems better since it was adjusted.
Might be a similar issue with yours as mine did not need a software update.

Congrats mate. Nice colour, looks good with the tint. I see they colour matched the door strips too, which makes em look good IMHO.

Thanks Jim. I asked for them to be colour coded after seeing a members ride here. Trying to work out if they have swapped the fronts to the wrong side. I should have been there to check, but I think they are supposed to angle up and back from the bottom edge. I think it looks better that way. I'm very pedantic, so I'm gonna have to dwell on that one.

Congratulations Mungus, your car looks great. I'll look out for it around Darwin. Mine is the Atacama Sand coloured D3 with TV plates and 'birdwatching tours' signage.

Thanks Mike. Like wise I'll keep an eye out for you, give a wave.
BTW. Your name sounds familiar. Have you ever spent any time in Weipa?
Cheers.
