New 4WD Recovery Tracks

Spotted these recently in a visit to my local Repco store.
Simply called 4WD Recovery tracks by Repco

Similar to these on ebay but a lot easier on the hip pocket.

They are now on sale across the country at $39.99 each
Made of flexible thermoplastic and rubber connected by galv cables.
Connectible in series for a longer traction mat.
Roll up, easy to store and a lot less costly than MaxTracs or similar.

I have used these before, and they do have a few things going for them over MaxTrax:


Better on bumpy / rocky surfaces
Break less often
Cheaper ;)

Downsides vs MaxTrax:


Can't bridge with them (even though you are not supposed to bridge with MaxTrax)
Not as much positive grip on the tyre
Heavier
Less sexy :o

Then again, I have never found the need for either these or MaxTrax as I use 30cm wide x 1-2 m long rolls of carpet!

From what I have heard (not from personal experience) your wheels just spit the roll recovery tracks out the back as they don't grip the ground/mud/ice well.

Tried them on the beach and wheel rolls them up and spits it out the back - not worth it even at that price.

Won't bother trying them then, that way I can spend a couple more dollars restoring my latest toy.:angel:

thems the ones that need to be pegged in or tied forwards so they dont just get spat...

they are usuful for floor mats and the likes and will help keep soft surfaces together IF you put them down first and walk them into the surface.

sandbags do about the same thing.

They worked great at Christmas when 2 of us tried to pull a twin cab triton with a busted clutch up from the tide line. We had no chance the sand was just too soft. Ended up being rescued by a cat loader after another bloke in our group busted his winch when we gave up. Anyway so far for the money I cant complain.

So, mixed reviews...

Could it be that they have their uses, but they are limited? Only asking cause I was considering a set to compliment the Maxtracks I have.

better than nothing, easier to store and lighter...

they do need to have a lead line and pegging for maximum effect but put down to hold the surface together and with enough self control to resist doing ther murica/yota driving technique of hanging it on the rev limiter and dumping the clutch out to get moving you should be fine with them...

If I had them and a set of trax onboard I would start out on the trax and lay the mats at the end of the trax using the trax to get me started and out and then mats to give me a little more space to gently build up speed before getting back onto the sand.
