I was just quoted $88 to ship a set of piston rings (yes rings only) from a well known parts dealer in the UK and that is not even Express,.......WTF is that all about

Perhaps they are Piston Broke and need the coin.

I would get quotes from other companies for the same product and shipping

I think that in the last year, courier prices from the UK have doubled or trebled.

I've been shocked a couple of times by shipping quotes.

I've just had 5 brake hoses (RRC, full set minus one) posted from the UK to here, cost £15 for 'trackable' via Royal Mail. ie, the post office. Came in padded bag.

Can't see how a set of rings would be that much heavier. Certainly smaller in volume.

Perish the uncharitable thought that 'carriage' or shipping co$ts are being used as a source of extra profit....

Classic Ebay trick, 99c buy it now $100 postage... from within the country too :o

And it was quoted a UPS as the carrier

A TDI head from Turners is now 100 quid via DHL so a set of rings at roughly half that cost is a bit steep.

Id really like to name them but will I cop a :banban: for not following the :rulez:

IIRC, DHL have a minimum rate which is fairly hefty.

Yep, had the same thing years ago, buying 2 light globes for my Mazda... Shrt story, differing ticket price and shipping combinations, yet all worked out to the same figure of $99.95.

Don't tell me that there was no collusion of any kind...

Edit;- Eventually found the one exception, paid $60 all up, using a US Postal Service Flat-Rate-Box. =- Just keep looking.....

Its actually not bad , i work in freight forwarding and i couldnt get it here any cheaper . Once you start sending airfreight the handling costs out strip the actual freight cost.

i understand that freight costs can be high, but it would be nice to be offered a few different options, "would you like air freight at $100 for 5 days or Slow boat $10 for 6 weeks", people dont always need things super fast and are happy to wait.

I've experienced this of late too. I shipped a bulbar last year, was only $150 or something.... got a little box of stuff the other day.... $150! wtf!

I think also the exchange rate is killing us.... we're only at 51 or 52 atm.

Edit: didn't see the 2nd page of comments.... Paddocks spares offers you multiple options for shipping.

Over the last year we have seen a 17% plus increase in prices across both goods and transport, and with the exchange rates its not going to get any better.

Some UK companies have very good air rates, others not.

Recently I had 67kg 6 packaged of varying sizes delivered by FEDEX, four days, door to door, $650.

Last year this was half this price.

Prices will I am sure be going in up on goods to cover these costs.

Akin to buying a 60" flat screen and 9.1 surround sound blueray player for $1500ish and the HDMI wire to connect them costs $100.

Wouldn't you think they would throw the HDMI wire in free Ian, as a package deal!!!

I had a similar experience getting a tail light lens for my two door Rangie. One supplier was slightly cheaper for the part, but the freight was nearly three times as much as the lens was worth. Told him he was joking and used the alternative supplier.

35 aud for a td5 maf meter a few months ago .... 60 aud for a series 1 ute hood(big box) then 20 bucks for 2 hood staples and 4 copper washers through Royal Mail .... 25 us for a Detroit locker from USA ... Who the hell knows.

So, back to original post ( no pun intended, really!) about rings and postage.

I did it the really hard way. Accidentally clicked on one pistons worth, instead of one engines worth. A few days later, one piston set arrived with all the other stuff.

So, I rang up late at night, and explained problem, and ordered a few more bits I forgot the first time, a few days later three piston sets arrived. A few hours later, I broke one ring during installation, so I rang again. The lovely lady remembered me, ha ha, and said she would do postage half price.

So, all in all, through my own inadequacies, I paid at least double in postage and I must say that the extra postage for one piston set was more than the price of the rings......

So, in the future, I will order five sets, and run the risk of being sent TD5 rings, or delay due to them asking whether I really want 5 for a 4 pot engine!! And that way, I reckon over the years, I will only break one top or one middle, and still have a part set left over.... I must admit that was the first I have broken in a fair old while, but Sod's law dictates that it will happen at the most inconvenient time.

Have to go a long way to beat the postage on a focusing screen for my camera, a piece of glass, about 1/4 the size of a credit card - postage $70 from the states - needless to say I'm still focusing with the original.

Someone is having a good loan of you there. I get 20 lbs of tools regularly from the USA in Large Flat Rate Boxes via their post office for US$72.

As to the original poster, buy your rings from the US. Better choices, better quality, better service, and the postage for a small padded envelope would be about US$15.

I no longer buy tools from GB/Europe unless there is no alternative. Attitude, price, and the bloody ridiculous freight/postage charges have done them out of my business. How about a set of instruction, parts, and service books for a milling machine AU$200, postage $220.

Saw a roof bar on ebay postage from usa $900!!!

I also find when looking on eBay to be really careful. Often a part seems cheaper but the postage is horrendous! Sellers often do this to reduce the commissions they have to pay to eBay

I need some V8 lifters and timing chain kit - good price from Turners but when postage is taken into account it is much cheaper to buy locally which I have now done.

This was a very well known supplier of rover parts, they have been mentioned in this forum many times.
