Welcome.
What you do depends on what you like to do. You could go north to the tropics and Cape York, or west to the inland and the deserts, or south to the mountains (including skiing) and the cities.
Lots of choices.

Welcome.
Just a thought , have you considered buying a unique to Australia Land rover 110? It would be half paid for by the cost of you shipping your defenders here. The Australian Army landrovers are all up for auction every month on graysonline. they sell about 10-20+ various models in Sydney and less in Brisbane and Melbourne. They are all 110 , most are 2 door soft-tops with a few 5 door wagons and a few 2 door wagons, There is also the 6x6 perentite. They all have 3.9 Isuzu diesels, have a look on the forums here as many regard these engines as the best ever in a LR. They also have Galvanized chassis.
They sell here

Money isn't always the driving factor... It's time & knowing your car too.
If you buy local, you need to factor in a top-toe service, kitting out, packing, blah, blah... You'll then want to have a bit of a 'shake down' and get to know the truck (all those odd little rattles & squeaks).
Once you've done your trip, you'll then need to allow time to sell and if you need to sell quick, you'll probably be selling at a loss.
That's assuming you don't get tripped up along the way with not having an address ot register at and all those other 'gotchas'. ;)

Hi, the cost for 40 fot cont is aprox 20000 dkr which is aprox 5000 au dollars.
Beware: By the time you've added all the handling charges at the port, that price will triple...
...then you have to ship it back!!!

PS A Landy will fit in a 20' container. ;)

There will also be a compulsory charge to fumigate and clean the vehicle upon landing, because of Oz's system to keep out foreign diseases and pests. I think you have to use the nominated cleaning company, no choice and it doesn't matter how well you cleaned it yourself, they still have to do it. Not sure of the cost, but I expect it would be at least $500. Suggest you research it.
But I'm sure it wil still be a great trip experience for you.

Hi,
I just payed a deposit on my first Defender today, and planning my first trip in September, to Birdsville, Big Red, Lake Eyre, Coopers Creek, if your interested we can chat. No extreme stuff, just my bucket list. About three weeks i think, before it gets too hot.
Hopefully 2015 will be Ularu & surrounds

No there won't. It will be inspected by AQIS but they'll only order the cleaning if not up to standard.
FWIW - Mine passed first time and didn't need a clean/fumigate. :D

Interesting. Thanks for that. Everyone else I've read who went through that had to be fumigated.

Damn, I couldn't even get mine from NSW to WA without having to have it cleaned by an approved agency. And by my standards it was damn near immaculate (doesn't say much about my standards...)

It wasn't a quick job...
Picked the front end of car up with crane & got inside with a hot water power wash. Then did the underneath & chassis rails.
Full service with lots of new (shiny) parts.
New tyres.
New camping & recovery gear (kept in wrapping and made point of showing AQIS).
Waxoyl (underseal) the entire car with black, to make it look like new!
The other important thing is to be present at the inspection, preferably suited & booted, with lots of paperwork and proof of the work (officials like that ;) )!! They are then able to see you understand why this cleaning is important and you've put the effort in.
