Hey guys I'm getting offered a free p76 motor but it needs a rebuild and piston rings and I was wondering if it would be worth it putting the time and effort to put it into my 87' county.
If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated.

No.

They are now too old, too fragile, and very hard to get parts for. They are also not just a straight bolt in, either.

In their day they were OK only for the power output, but not as strong as the Rover V8 by a long shot.

I've had two in rangies, rings, bearings ect are the same as rover. They need engine mounts changed, are a slightly wider vee,you will need rover heads if you want power steering and aircon.I found them great, good power.I still have one pulled to pieces, needs a rebore, never got around to doing it.Oh,water pump cover is different, mine had rangie covers as well.

I had an injected one in an 89 rangie, it was awesome. But they are old and corrode away

I've got one in my dune buggy. I've had the heads off and done all the gaskets etc. As stated above, parts are not as easy (or quite as cheap) as the Rover V8s. I use the P76 because it was in the buggy when I got it, and it is an absolute torque monster. However, I was VERY close to just putting in a 3.5 when I thought I was going to have to pull the heads again.

If you want a V8, just go a 3.9 or a 4.0. They're very cheap, parts are cheaper & more plentiful, and they're newer - less chance of corrosion when you pull things apart. I actually had to fill & file some pits in the block with QUIKSTEEL putty... Amazingly, its held up well!

Only minor stuff required for putting an EFI in the vehicle (return fuel line to your tank, plus loom & computer which would hopefully come with the engine), and from there on you can just get a $500 runner from eBay whenever you face a rebuild ;)
