for people (with a D4) that don't have the LR Nav options and just have the small screen in the dash, what is a good Nav/camera option to replace that screen.
And if you replace that screen how does it integrate with the existing radio/bluetooth.
I don't want to have an extra screen attached to the dashboard or anything like that.
cheers

VMS 700 4x4 GPS. Comes with a camera but I installed one that fits in the handle, off evilbay for a few bucks.

For the screen I use a clip-on rear vision mirror that has an inbuilt screen. It doesn't auto-dim, but the glass is darker on it anyway.
For the camera I used an eBay one that was supposed to replace one of the number plate lights. I didn't like it in that position so replaced the original light, and modified the camera so it would fit in the factory spot.
Check out this existing thread (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/126787-reversing-camera.html) for a lot more options and photos.

Mate, it's taken a lot of research to find what needs to be done and to track down the parts to build a solution!
I promise to let everyone know!

Hopefully it will allow Satnav if you already have colour screen & camera.
Looking forward to hearing about it.

Colour screen and camera is a GVIF add on...
This is for lower spec (midline) audio systems with the original little grey screen...

Will be a couple of weeks.
The following needs to be done:
- Screen is not std to Aus market so being imported (if successful will become part of the range)
- Module to interface is in transit
Once here on the bench the setup will be tested and upon successful testing will be wired into the vehicle.
Once that's all done and dusted the costings will be sorted and the upgrade announced!

Hi,
No I don't - I wrapped up my Landy business (put it on hold I definitely) as I can't maintain a service level that I believe must be maintained.
But as these come up I will share with the community.

Hey Tombie - have you looked into any of these Chinese "replacement " satnav touch screen units? http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/717381/12389304/0/1270608740.jpg - are they any good? I am guessing you get what you pay for

looks like they don't do one for a D4 though.

Haven't seen that one before...
Freelander unit.. That explains the shape...
Looks good but won't integrate.
My criteria was that the car must maintain it functionality and only add to it.
The Chinese unit for the D4 puts a second version of Bluetooth, which causes some loss of functionality in the factory Bluetooth.
Hence this work....

"Apparently" everything still works except the 6 disc changer - this unit runs through the aux input channel I think - supposedly steering wheel controls still function and control this unit also ? I haven't pushed the button on the purchase yet as the double din Chinese touchscreen av unit I got fort BMW has rubbish radio reception - but then I only paid $350 clams

Hi Tombie,
I'm in the situation where my MY13 D4 (arrived in Oz in November) has a Harman & Kardon audio system. Not sure which one it is though (I bought the car as a Run-Out model). Dealer wasn't particularly helpful in that regard. Spec sheet off the net states 'High Ice' as being the lower-end H&K but not sure if I can put full faith in that. I certainly doesn't have 17 speakers though, so I'm assuming that puts the 'Premium Ice' out of the equation.
Anyway, it has the larger touch screen. It has a reversing camera. And it has the 4WD screen. But no SATNAV.
I'm missing the SATNAV from my old D4 already, so want to fix that.
I really don't want another bit of kit hanging off my dash/windscreen unless I really have to. However, I don't want to lose any of the LR functionality either.
Will the system you are working on suit my purposes?
Thanks mate,
Kev.

Sounds interesting whatever it might be :p
I have one of the cheap Chinese windows gps units with reverse camera av input which works extremely well but..a nicer unit which can integrate correctly with the car sounds awesome...
Would love a larger screen but I have not found a unit yet with rear inputs which works better in the cubby hole space.

I had a cheap Chinese one in my Nissan and it worked great. Even bought all the Hema offroad Maps and had that working. The thing is, it only had to replace a fairly ordinary factory radio. I even modified the boot file so I could select offroad nav or street nav. I'd really like it to integrate with existing functionality otherwise I'd spend the money and buy a pioneer or kenwood. Which would work but would make all that other stuff in the middle of the dash redundant.

For those with the screen already.
A GVIF interface, and gps unit into that will give on screen nav.
Only catch is you may have to use a remote to enter addresses

Thanks Tombie.
Are you talking about the system you are developing or this approach is already available elsewhere?
I reckon I can live with a remote for address searches.
Where will this other hardware live? Under the dash somewhere?

The Navibox-2 allows you to use the touchscreen functionality and there is an car audio place here in NZ that sells them and will install it on my 2013 D4, but the price is crazy ($2500 NZD) as you can get them on bay for about $150. Just need the correct cables, load local maps (igo) ,maybe a change in the CCF file and you should be good to go.
Tombie would be interested in your thoughts on this.

I started out with a cheap Chinese double din unit off ebay. Screen quality was poor, so was the Bluetooth (which I use heaps).
Ended up going for one of these AVIC-X940BT - In-Dash Navigation AV Receiver with 6.1" WVGA Touchscreen Display, Built-In Bluetooth®, and Advanced App Mode for iPhone® 4/4S | Pioneer Electronics USA (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/GPS-Navigation/AVIC-X940BT)
Screen quality is great, Bluetooth is awesome.....work through a separate Parrot system microphone. Great sound quality. Like everything about it, except that you cant download off road maps onto it.
Thinking about going for one of these Polaris GPS (http://mypolaris.com.au/polarisgps/)
It doesn't have a separate microphone for the Bluetooth, but does have Hema off road maps at an extra cost. I know a guy that has one in his car and one in his wife's car. He is very happy with them.
My audio guy has installed quite a few and has not had any call backs.
Fairly good price as well.

No Tombie, it is a full replacement.
Keep in mind that I no longer have my D4......the Pioneer unit is fitted to my new ride which is another brand of vehicle. Having said this, the head units are adaptable for almost any vehicle.

So that raises another question.
What components in the Dash of a D4 is the head unit? Is it part of the panel that includes the volume control and selector? Because that is not a standard Double DIN size, How do you replace it?
Or is it behind the small screen? and the buttons are just a Sweep late?

Looking at the setup behind the dash..
Pretty much you're stuck with what you have.
There isn't a way to easily (although anything is possible) strip out the factory unit in a D4 and fit any aftermarket version.

(Un)fortunately you haven't missed anything, If you had missed something it would mean we were making great progress...
So what HAS happened:
Screen to fit dash acquired (tick)
Module to process factory signals to new screen was acquired from O/S which has custom code written for LHD versions of the D4. (tick)
Modules wired into a RHD vehicle (tick)
 Touch screen functioning correctly (tick)
Steering wheel controls functioning (FAIL) :(
Seems the Canbus for LHD and RHD have a slightly different requirement, and that the moment the buttons on the steering wheel were pressed the whole thing went crazy!
So the code is being rewritten to suit the RHD D4 and then back to testing...
I have completed most of the D3 one though, just reassembling the vehicle trim :)

So is it possible to get the OEM system out of a wrecked D4 and install into a no camera/Nav car that has HiICE audio?

It should be possible as the HiIce Audio has the CanBus wiring in place for the Amplifier. Then a small change to the CCF.
Perhaps PM Mr Snieg, I believe he was in possession of said screen.

So is it possible to get the OEM system out of a wrecked D4 and install into a no camera/Nav car that has HiICE audio?
I'm not talking from expertise only the experience of lots of phone calls and PMs.
I have two D4s, one with Bi-Xenon and one without. One has SATNAV and the other does not. The older D4 has the Bi-xenon and SATNAV.
I wanted to swap in-toto the Bi-Xenons from the older car to the new.
I also wanted to get an OEM SATNAV setup added to my already existing MY13 Hi-Ice system ('cause I miss the one in my older car) that already has touchscreen and reverse camera. I didn't intend using the parts from my old D4's SATNAV, I meant to buy new components, thinking it should just be a SATNAV module add on.
I'm certain it's doable but LR make it very difficult (and expensive) to retrofit anything.....even headlights for god's sake! If you research your car's VIN Number on TOPIx you will see what has been added (read enabled) at the factory. The car has been 'told' what can be used and what can't. The car's configuration file can be modified I'm sure but it sounds like a very murky path that I was afraid to tread without any hard evidence of success.
Strangely however, non OEM companies can fit a non OEM add-on that will work with your existing 7" screen. You lose no LR functionality, it just adds to what was already there. $2K a pop though ... and it's using the same platform as Toyota ... LOL!!! So how they can achieve this and LR with all their OEM computers and hardware at hand can't do easily .... is beyond me.
I've only talked to two places in Brisbane capable of doing the modification but they stated that they get a lot of work from LR, BMW, Merc, etc. Seems bloody stupid to me that OEMs let this work walk out the door.
Cheers,
Kev

Who were they in Brissy? Usually it involves leaving the oem equipment in the car and having an adapter in the loom to bring in the new equipment so you don't lose any steering wheel or dash functions. New equipment does all the functions the oem stuff is just conduit (for a better word) to keep the canbus functioning

Sorry mate, I've confused the issue by the way I wrote this. When I said I didn't want to use old components, I meant I wasn't intending trying to swap the SATNAV system from my old D4 to the new one.
The option the after market guys offer uses all the 'existing' hardware (LR Hi-Ice and Touchscreen) and just add their equipment in .... which I thought should be a no-brainer for LR to do with their own kit.
So exactly as you say, it plugs into the LR loom in some way or another.
Hope that's clear?
Kev.

I have a D3 with (out of date) sat nav and I want to put in a reverse camera and maybe add an up to date nav system or mirror my iPhone onto the screen. Ideally like something that works with the touch screen though.
Does the one quoted above work?
What is the best option?
