View Full Version : RRS or D3??

Apologies if there is already a thread on this topic - I had a quick look and couldn't see one.

So I am going to look at a nice HSE TDV6 today which has come up, and is in my price range, but lo and behold a RRS TDV6 has popped up and at the same price... I have been researching D3s for months and am just about sold, but I love the RRS. I will test drive both and go from there, as to date I have only driven the D3 (and I was very impressed).

I wonder whether others on the forum had the same dilemma?

Thanks

Depends on what you want to use it for.

Biggest selling point for me for the D4 was the amount of room in the back. We do a lot of touring / camping and tend to load a lot of gear in the back - the D3/4 wins hands down in this area.

In most other areas of comparison, I believe they're pretty similar. I've never seen anyone take an RRS what I'd call "off road" - but I know that there are those that do - at least a couple on this forum.

Other than that - it's easier to get accessories for the Disco than the RRS. Not impossible for the RRS, but there is far less choice available, and what you can find is often more expensive than a similar item for a Disco. Certainly with a D3 you'll have a much better choice of wheel / tyre options that are better suited to off roading if that's what you want to do with the vehicle, and you won't see too many RRS's with a decent bullbar on them (though I do know of at least one). If you want to fit a long range tank - a rear wheel carrier on an RRS just doesn't look right to me - but they are available. Not sure if you can get a snorkel for an RRS - I've never seen one. But that is not really a consideration for me, as I haven't got one on the Disco either (IMO they just look butt ugly - especially on a white D3/4 - and I would never fit one unless I had a specific need for it).

Plus I just think that the D3/4 (especially a well set-up one) looks better than the RRS - but that's just my opinion. ;)

A lot of it would be personal preference. For me, I liked the interior, materials and particularly the looks of the RRS over the D3. It is a striking machine that commands a lot of road presence. However I've had many times that I would've liked the extra room and the extra two seats of the D3.

Overall performance is slightly better for RRS which weighs over 100kg less, and RRS handles more flatly on the road thanks to stiffer suspension, but this of course makes its presence felt on harsher roads, although no one has ever felt uncomfortable in mine even on the roughest roads with 20's. The air suspension does a good job of soaking up bumps and particularly corrugations.

Off road they are as capable as each other, although you are more likely to find a D3 with the optional e-diff than you are an RRS.

I personally had the very same dilemma. I ended up going the D3 for a few reasons.

Price, at the time the D3 was significantly cheaper, over 15 grand for same Km's and model
Lift height for off road from the air bags, I believe the D3 gets higher
Shape, believe it or not I like the Disco more, the mighty fridge! (now haha)
Accessory availability
Room for camping gear + 7 seats
At the time I couldn't find any RRS without a sunroof or 3

I think your overall comments are spot on - however on wheels and tyres - anything that will fit a D3 will go on the equivalent RRS.

Suspension lift is the same - with standard tyres the RRS will have slightly less clearance as they have a slightly lower profile (on 18" wheels 55s on the RRS vs 60s on the D3)

I originally wanted a RRS until I looked at how much room there was in the back and realised I wouldn't fit all the camping gear in there and still have room for people in the second row. I particular dislike how the sloping rear hatch eats into the available room.
They are just as capable and as mentioned a little lighter. It all coes down to what you want to do with it.

Like others have mentoned I too went through the same dilema when I bought the D3, and again when I bought the D4.

I love the look of the Sport, but on both occassions it was space that meant the Disco won, but a couple of other points that got the Disco the gong were;

Extra Seats - we don't use them every day, but we do use them, and for a short time when I was Discoless I miised them

Seat configuration 2nd row - the middle seat folding flat into the floor means I can put my surfboards in the car, and still have my 2 kids sitting in comfort. With all of my past cars (and the RRS) putting the boards inside would mean 2 kids sitting in the "60" of the 60:40 split. Many cars have one of those fold out sections but none big enough to get a board through

Tailgate - when I was tossing up between the D4 and the MY13 RRS, the RRS tailgate had changed from previous models to a single lift gate - I find this makes packing for camping etc a pain in the butt, and love the top/bottom split gate of the Disco (it's hard to find any new 4x4 with it)

Wheels - IMHO the RRS looks it's best with 20's so I would only get a RRS with 20's, but as we do quite a bit of sand driving I was worried about driving around Moreton Island on them. I considerd buying another set of 19's to put on for camping but in the end this was just one more indication that despite how much I love the look of the RRS, the way I use my car meant it just wasn't going to be practical.

All of that said, none of the above stops me being jealous of anyone i see driving around in a RRS! Good luck to 'em :D

One only needs to refer to this thread to see what a well set up RRS looks like:

Thanks for all your replies. As it turns out the RRS sold before I could get near it. It didn't even last a day on Carsales!!

Like most of you, the D3 will better suit my needs I think. I plan to do a fair bit of off roading and camping.

Hopefully the D3 I see today is it!

Had the same thing, it was best described to me as "the RRS is more precious" the Disco is more useable.
Had a RRS for a month (supercharged) for me it was the space inside that made the D4 I have now more appealing.

RRS can only seat 4 adults comfortably, no 7 seat option and the boot was terrible for going away with the wife and kids. The D4 fits everything and everyone in it, and i'm not as precious about "using" it like I would with the RRS.

Cheers

I had my 2006 LR3 for 5 years and traded it in on a new 2011 RRS.
Love the look of the RRS but miss the rear space of the LR3 and the split tailgate which makes a great seat.
Both have their pluses and minuses.

We don't have LR3s in Australia - D3s only. More bloody Americanisms creeping in. Looks like we have lost the SUV fight but we should insist on calling our vehicles by their correct names - Discovery 3 or D3 not the American Landrover 3 or LR3.

I haven't conceded the SUV fight yet ... It's a flamin' 4wd not a glorified soccer mum transporter !!

Whilst I can easily call my Patrol a truck there is no way I could call the D4 a truck. It is good that on this forum we never refer to our vehicles as trucks!

I'm sorry Gary - I should have pointed out that the photo was taken with my fridge in "access mode" so the wheels aren't readily obvious.... :D

Yeah, and stop the nonsense about us speaking english! I speak 'straylen! :D

Don't get me started on "cul de sac" - they might have those in France, but here we have a "dead end street with a spot at the end to chuck a u-ey"

Drive them both and see what you like.

They're both based on the same chassis (the RRS is 6" shorter) but the main difference is the Disco has a massive trunk or can carry 7 people in comfort.

After having driven both and owned two discos they are kinda chalk and cheese in my opinion. If you want a great looking, sporty handling landrover go the sport, if you want practicality and huge space and want to go 4wding every weekend, and you'll probably want to do what the rest of us have done and add the mods then the Disco is a no brainer, for all the reasons already mentioned.
My perfect scenario, the D 4 I have now and a brand new RR sport with 20" rims
Parked alongside it. Go the Monday night Lotto!! :D

I don't remember seeing that on the list of options Pedro! Though if you have one if them, there's going to be bugger all space left in the boot.

Damned Americanisms creeping in everywhere.

The selection of wheels on the new one seems to make the difference between it looking the ducks nuts, and looking dowdy. I've seen a couple that look really terrible, but then the ones with stonking great wheels look great.

That said, I still think the New FF Range Rover looks like what the new RR Sport should have been - now that is a good looking car!

Each to their own I guess - to me the new FFRR looks like a hi end Hyundai or Kia SUV and the new RRS looks like a 4wd and is far more balanced in its styling.
