Hi all just thought I'd relate the most disappointing event in my time as a Disco 4 2011 owner. On our way back home from a great weekend in Melbourne last Monday we were cruising along the freeway with no hint of any problems in my recently out of warranty 2011 Discovery 4 HSE TDV6.
I had just passed another vehicle, so was in the right lane, when there was a slight shudder and the Disco lost all power. I quickly indicated left so I could coast to a safe section off to the left shoulder of the freeway.
I don't know whether I had a premonition of this happening but in December I had purchased a 2 year extended warranty from LR Morwell for $3k.
Having this warranty in place meant I was able to ring Roadside assist to flatbed the Disco to the dealer at Morwell and order a hire car.
On Wed the worst was confirmed that my Discovery had a broken crankshaft. This was extremely disappointing as we recently sold our FPV as we thought we would only need one car in our retirement, little did we know!
I am in the process of extending the car hire as the Disco probably won't be repaired until the end of March.
The claim itself is still in progress so hopefully there will be no issues.
This post is for the information of any Disco owner who's vehicle is approaching warranty expiry, you should seriously consider the extension as it protects you for a further 100,000kms if you intend keeping the vehicle. If you decide to sell you should ask for a higher price as it will give the purchaser peace of mind as the warranty is transferable.
I hope this post is helpful to you guys, I'll keep you up to date on the claim and how it's handled.[/QUOTE]

I am sorry to hear of this as it is a concern to all 2.7 owners (I assume it was a 2.7).

Can you let us know the reason - possibly a spun bearing though should have been fixed in your model or what has been happening in the UK, manufacturing faults have resulted in the crank breaking near the second main bearing journal from the front.

While your extended warranty may be able to be onsold with the car if you sell it, be aware some cannot and only apply to the purchasing owner.

Your right is a 3L also the Warranty PDS stated it is transferrable. It is a an arrangement between Landrover and Alliance going since 2010, it is actually an extended factory warranty. I think the only difference is that the insurer pays the costs rather than Landrover.

Well that is the first I have heard of with a 3.0l. Just checked - they use a different crank to the 2.7 so that is even more of a worry for 3.0 owners.

Another 3L engine was destroyed whilst towing, up Mt Ousley IIRC.

I'd be interested to know if the end result is a new engine (new engine number etc) or a repair of the current.
Selling a vehicle that has had an engine change is not something I'd be interested in!

They don't fix them only swap them out. Personally I would rather have a new engine any day of the week.

I'd be very interested to know how the warranty insurance is handled, I've now got a 2009 RRS and have about 1 week left to take up an extended warranty. Is there a limit to the amount covered or is the cover unlimited?

I would expect the insurer to also counter claim against LR as there would be a reasonable expectation for it to last much longer than 107k.

Bad luck mate....hopefully it will work out well for you.

My 2009 2.7 D3 also destroyed a motor, at 118000km, a spun bearing as mentioned previously. unfortunately I had no help from LRA as I had "used the vehicle for 4 wheel driving and there was oil starvation"............. absolute rubbish. They wouldn't pay any notice to the fact that the same problem had been recorded in Oz, South Africa and UK.
I ended up getting a <20k 2010 2.7 engine installed for 12K by an independant and so far have had a trouble free 138000K's.
As stated before I now use independants and have been more than happy with the service, work and costs
I still do not have a trust in these motors, they seem fragile to me

Have there been any 2.7l failures since they were modified for the D4,does anyone know?

Make sure your extended warranty is factory not dealer as I reckon the factory warranty would have a lot more weight than merely a dealer warranty if there is a dispute and consumer affairs becomes involved.

Hi Mick

The extended warranty for LR is handled by Allianz, but it is an direct extension of the original factory warranty, same things covered etc. Even with the original factory warranty, all the roadside assistance etc is provided by Allianz.

How much $ for the Allianz warranty? My factory warranty run out in June.

Yes, I know thanks, I was just thinking that some dealers offer dealer warranty but you have to get the vehicle serviced by them only, so its not worth much.

Yep...that 4wding...it's ok being the most awarded 4wd...as long as you don't use it as a 4wd! That's where you went wrong...how outrageous. I'm thinking that 12k might have been well spent on an engineering report and litigation...but of course less heartache and vehicle back on the road the way you did things and they bank on that.

Cheers

Thanks for the best wishes fellas, got a call Friday from dealer to say I need a new engine. The crankshaft is cracked! Thank God I had the extended cover as they said it wouldn't have been covered otherwise. To the guy who only has a week to implement his extended warranty I haven't got the PDS with me but I'm sure it said warranty is up to the value of the vehicle.

Sorry further to the above, the dealer will arrange the cover, it is factory warranty extended by 2 years or 100,000kms whichever comes first. The cost was $3k as there was a special on at the time, it's usually $4k.

X3 I recently bought a D3 with a new engine. It was one of the deciding factors.

Under the new consumer laws it would have been covered, particularly given the age of your vehicle but it would have been a bit of a fight and a lot of worry.

Yes I thought so too Garry, but would have to go thru all the BS. This was a recent incident so once the warranty period draws out it'll be more and more difficult.

I suppose I now have a dilemma, do I keep my Disco 4 which I love that performs and drives like nothing else but gives problems both large and small. Or do I sell it and buy a 4WD that doesn't do things as well but is more reliable. Can anyone add further to this as I need reasons to keep the Disco, I suppose my hesrt says Disco and head says look for alternatives.

For me its a confidence thing.

Once I have lost confidence in a vehicle its time for a change!

I suppose it is a matter of what you would change to.

Every 4x4 out there has had major failure events.

I agree - though for me it's more SWMBO's confidence than mine. As soon as she decides she has no confidence in a vehicle, she won't drive it. So it's as good as gone at that point.

LGM

Yep agreed.

The confidence thing I am talking about refers to the vehicle I am driving at the time.

Chuck is right though when he mentions the other brands failing. No matter what vehicle you purchase there will always be an element of pot luck albeit small!

As for the SWMBO element I always consider the comments made by a higher authority!:wasntme:
