View Full Version : Dull thud from the rear

Gents,

This week I had the rear brakes (pads and rotors) done on the D4. Since then I can hear a dull thud coming from the rear when I hit a bump.

I took it back to the workshop this morning; as the car was going up on the hoist I noticed the spare was hanging loose. On further inspection we found the winding assembly was not pulling the wheel all the way up and so we blamed the thud on this issue. This will be a warranty repair.

Having taken the spare off the car (before it falls off) I went for a drive and sure enough, the thudding is still there. Any ideas, asks the mechanical dunce?

All the exhaust hangers in place? Any movement if you jar the exhaust?

HI WhiteD3,
Thee are some balance weight "things" at the back in the corners, maybe.... Apart from that check all the usual things, bushes, chassis connections, I'm assuming nothing was disturbed in the back that is now rocking around in the spaces in the rear corners. Trying to imagine what else would be disturbed when just doing the pads and rotors........ interesting.

Tow hitch isn't loose is it?

There goes my idea, I was just wondering if you remembered to bury the last body and suggest you check the cargo area, but your photo does seem to show a discrepancy.


Fraser dates should be up this week.

Silly me, I assumed that all the bolts had been put back in as part of the rotor and pad replacement............as I said, interesting!!!!

Oh, so you think that the calipers should be bolted back in after changing pads and rotors do you?

Think I'd be having a serious go at whoever you had do the brakes on the vehicle.

You just have to wonder how many LR "reliability" issues are due to this kind of "servicing".

Yep!
Had a similar issue about 5 years ago with rear shocks on my D1. They forgot to do the bolts up. Couldn't work out the banging noise on rough road. :mad:
The shop said they would replace them but couldn't guarantee it because "Land Rovers were known to do this."
needless to say I got my money back and put a set in myself!

Strangely just had the front caliper on mine similar. Only one bolt missing though. It was a while after brakes were done so maybe on torqued correctly. horrible noise and stopped the vehicle completely. The caliper rotated and jammed.

Hi There,
This is a little off topic, well its a lot actually, my wife has a Mini, same country of origin as the LR, anyway, went to buy a tranny filter yesterday, cost $260 plus, genuine, the guy behind the counter asked why I was buying a new one, I told him because I was doing an oil change, seemed like good practice, "nah mate, we just wash them and put them back" un-quote. the CVT transmission on the Mini is on its last legs this could go a long way to explaining why. A selling feature for the vehicle was that it had been regularly serviced.................and I'm supposed to feel more comfortable knowing that?

One bolt found to have broken while the other had disappeared. Perhaps one was over torqued and subsequently broke, allowing the other to work lose over the next 24 hours?

All fixed. Apologies accepted, etc.

it was just a general comment on those who don't take care with the work they do resulting in issues that get blamed on the brand.

You'd think the bright spark responsible would've wondered where the left over bolts came from...

Still, someone once said if you took something apart and reassembled it a few times you'd have enough parts to build a second one...
