Has anyone had experience with these video cameras? Spec wise they look impressive yet they seem to have some very unique shortcomings. 12-13 stops of dynamic range and they seem capable of getting close to producing some Red and ARRI comparable film footage all for a fraction of the price. The shortcomings though sure seem a little strange, who makes a camera these days that doesn't allow you to see how much memory you have left or allow you to format the card?

I downloaded some RAW footage (yes it shoots RAW) and what it allows you to do in editing is amazing. The 4K camera is essentially taking an 8MP image 30 times a second, that in itself creates some issues. The results though do speak for themselves.

You can watch the below in 4K if you have a suitable display

Have had a couple of chances to play with one.
They are certainly an awesome bit of kit. Software is a little clunky but is being updated quite regularly.
I like the idea of the pocket version. The full sized one though is just a little bit unpolished to be worth that sort of money.
Dont get me wrong though, they take some awesome images.

Im a fan of the Canon 5d or the Nikon D4 (i think) they are more usable for most of the shoots i do and the D4 shoots 4k too.

Are you sure the D4 does 4K? Nikon says 1080P, Clips limited to 4GB / 30 minutes, or 20 minutes for 1080p and 720p60/50. This bit seems a bit sucky Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI port, but only when no flash cards are present in the camera body. The BM Pocket does ProRes 422 straight to the card or raw, the D4 cost $6K, the BM Pocket costs $1K. It's these benefits which really start to outweigh the strange negatives these cameras have.

Wasnt absolutely sure thats the one. (Haven't been shopping for a while :p )

[Turns out i was thinking of the rumoured D4s]
As a photographer a single use camera is a little bit of a waste when a decent dslr can do awesome video as well as photos.

The blackmagic cinema cameras have their place. In studios and static setups it's perfect, or when there is time to setup a proper rig.

Personally my biggest gripe with the BCC is the lack of physical buttons. For some reason i hate that i cant turn a wheel to adjust the ISO or shutter speed easily.

When they release a second version with a more refined interface ill be more inclined to consider it.
For me though a mid range full frame dslr is a better investment at the moment.
