LT95 Speedo Drive Pinion Replacement

I've just found that my new gearbox isn't driving the new speedo cable and new speedo head. The cable and head checks out okay with a drill, so I'm pretty sure I can pull out the speedo drive pinion to check it without pulling off the whole housing, as the workshop manual says you have to. Has anyone else done that? Can find a thing while searching . . .

You should be able to prise it out with a flat bladed screwdriver Davo. It has a lip around the edge. Hopefully it has been serviced when the box was done up and should come out easy. If they have been in there for some time they are hard to get out and usually require housing removal to get at them.

Thanks, I was suspecting as much. I haven't taken apart an LT95 for so long that I couldn't remember. This box is new, but was in storage for about 27 years, so there have been one or two little details to work out.

It's a funny one - I can get an old cable to work when the gearbox is running, or the new cable to work by holding the end in another pinion or a drill, but not otherwise. I'm wondering if the new cable end is a bit off and the inside of the pinion is a bit funny as well. I might slide the new inner cable out and put the old one in, or do something to the end of the new cable to make it fit the pinion better. Ah, the joy of brand new parts.

Thanks again - out it came, and sure enough, the pinion end was a loose fit on the end of the new cable. The new cable wasn't quite made properly. Bloody typical!

I seem to have the same problem Davo reported. I've replaced the broken speedo cable on my '85 120 Isuzu LT95 with a Britpart PRC6023 only to find the inner cable is too small for the square drive on the pinion to reliably drive the speedo. Okay, I've been a cheapskate, and is this a part where I need to pay the extra for a particular brand, or even genuine :(? Or does someone have a fix for the existing cable?

Further searching on AULRO suggests that I should actually be using a two piece cable. However, I wouldn't have thought that this would make any difference to the cable / pinion fit - ie the pinion would be the same size across any number of models / years / cable types.

I would stick with the 1 piece cable, they are more reliable. It must be a bodgy one if it wont drive it properly. If you bought it locally ask them for a replacement. Other alternative is to modify the end of the cable or the end of the speedo drive shaft with a hammer:o so that the cable fits better.

I bought the cable in a box of parts I got from the UK. I might buy another one locally and see if I have better luck. If not, I'll whack the square drive on the pinion with a hammer or stick it in the vice...
