Gday All,

Im looking at installing a reverse camera, but seeing the car only has the base model stereo, im wondering what others have done when in the same position.

If I didn't want to replace the stereo.

Are there options where a reverse camera plus GPS can come as one?

Maybe camera and DVD ?

I have searched reverse camera on here so have a good idea on what to get but just thought I could improve the options so the screen is blank whilst driving.

Many thanks

Cheers Ean

Yeh I read that, but I have a D3 that has no screen at all, and reading Tombie last post I assumed what he was trying could not be done.

Hey

I have recently done the gps idea from here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic62936 with a garmin dezl 560 (using car mode) with an ebay number plate camera.

It works great and looks pretty much factory. Total cost was about $450

Ean, I've got something in progress at the moment. I also have the base stereo, and I did start off trying to retrofit the OEM screen and nav, but the loom gave me nightmares.

So now I've got a small 7" Android tablet and a D4 screen surround, I've wired a 5V USB converter into the cigarette lighter circuit, and a AUX-in in the back of the stereo. The tablet has an AV-in port that I've wired up a cheap eBay rear camera, the sort that replaces one of the number plate lights.

The nav unit basically all attaches to the H shaped fascia.

As soon as I'm finished, I'll take some pics.

Here's a picture with the screen in place:

It's cost me a grand total of $150 including the camera and surround.

If anyone's interested, I'll do a writeup of the install and what it took.

@ Sheerluck, are you trying to power the screen with a 5v USB converter?

I have used one in the past to power a single (compass) chip but I would be surprised if it could power any sort of a screen.

Your post raised my interest because I have been struggling with a project lately and it turned out that the 5v supply from my desktop USB was not up to scratch.

Use a 2.1A USB charger.

Yes, I am, but probably not the sort you mean. When I mentioned it was wired into the cigarette lighter circuit, I meant one of these:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74340&stc=1&d=1395089131
which is a 3A supply. So more than adequate for powering the screen.

So, if I understand it correctly, the idea is to do basically what I think Polaris? claims, with options of everything from reversing camera to gps and media bits integrated, but choosing your own bits?

Might have to dig out that project that changed a D2 from single to double DIN fascia!!!
