Hi Guys

I am looking at a second hand 2008 diesel freelander 2 with 120k kms on it. I just got rid of a nightmare fl1 & the wife (& myself to be honest) thinks im nuts even concidering another landrover. I know the FL2 is a good & totay diffrent car to the FL1 but am still worried. It has just poped up & the guy wants a quick sale or he will trade. What would be a good price to offer? he is asking 21K & I wont pay that.

What are the major service intervals? is there one due soon? what am I looking at price wise? The FL1 was 2.5k!!

What should I look for & ask about the car? Are there any common faults? I will most probably ask to get it looked over if I buy it.

Thanks in advance.

I love mine. Auto or manual and is it just an a to b or do you plan on getting off the beaten track.

Some around that era had some diff issues but I would assume with those kms if it was one it would have been replaced

Hey chur bro,

Unfortunately I can't help you much with the diesel as I have the 3.2ltr, but all I can say is that when I purchased mine (2007 HSE), it had 127Klms on the clock. I to was worried with what I'd heard of the previous model and did not want to be stuck with a lemon, how wrong was I!!!! Yes there has been some issues, but nothing my local mechanic has not been able to look after, and the issues are only due to normal wear and tear. Look out for the normal things, service records, condition, how does it drive, any strange noises, and if you can have it checked out by a professional. I know there are issues with the rear diff but it may have been repaired under warranty. Give LR a call and they can tell you what recalls have been done.

If all checks out, you will be rewarded with an exceptional drive which is a quantum leap over the previous model!! Watch a couple of reviews on YouTube, read the reviews, if all works in your favour, you will be rewarded with an exceptional vehicle. As for the price, hard to put a price without seeing the vehicle, I suppose it's what your prepared to pay... Best of luck!!

I've got a 2007 diesel with 160000km on it. Rear diff is the biggest problem with them. (Bearings were made in India) I've done one in mine. I repaired it myself so can't say on cost of repair. Shock absorbers are fairly common also in higher km ones.
The most major service is due at 240000km but personally I would change drivetrain fluids and timing belt a lot earlier.
The price is in the range for them. (Trade would be lower) Offer what you feel comfortable with

I live in Kakadu national park so off the beaten track is a good possibility, though in saying that I would try to keep it off a lot of the long corrugated dirt roads out here.

Thanks for the reply. Any idea what he is likely to be offered as a trade in on what I described??

I don't want to be making a silly low offer to him, but only have around 17k to play with at the moment. He has said there is room to move on the price.

Cheers

Mine is a 2008 model SE diesel with 184k on the clock and I was recently offered $15k as a trade on another vehicle although they started at $7k. I decided to keep my car. Those not in the know think of them the same as the F1 with a bad reputation but they are a good car. The problems are the rear diff whine, there can be some that have issues with the power steering rack, the key fob can stop working and like any car with lots of electrical gadgets....they can start to falter. Having said that, mine has never left me stranded anywhere and it has done some tough kilometres. I get mine serviced by my local and it doesn't cost much more than any normal car. If you use a Land Rover dealer then you can at least double the cost on everything.

I have taken my FL1 to a local for minor work, but was always under the impression that I needed to take it to Land Rover if it needed to be hooked up to their computers?

When I was in Alice Springs all the locals told me to take it to the dealer?

That's because Alice is small and the Dealer here is on par for costs with any mech in town, has pretty good parts stock and local mechs will stop there first for parts then mark up your price, even for a regular service.

The Alice dealer was good, great guy to deal with & good prices. Darwin prices are through the roof.

I've got a Land Rover and a Jeep and most mechanics don't want to work on either of them. They are used to Jap cars and don't want the headache of figuring different systems. I had to cultivate the guy I use although I had to replace the injector seals in my Jeep last year and the diesel specialist didn't want to do it, so my guy did it and said never again. :) It's the price we pay for driving better cars......better off road standard, better equipped, better fuel economy, better power, better looking.
