Gentleman,

I have just made the switch from a 2001 P38 (and 2002 BMW 325Ci) to a L322 HSE. Could not be happier with the switch, however there are some matters that need attending to. Mainly the roof lining + damaged trim and the additional trim added by the previous owner.

I cant find an exact color match for the roof lining so the plan was to re trim from the window line up. I was thinking ivory colored swede. If anyone has any ideas that they would do to there car i would love to hear it.

As for the trim, in the photo the last owner has added these black things... I want to take them off and bring it back to original...

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74456&stc=1&d=1395312017

However as can bee seen from the one on the dash that has been removed the glue is rather affixed. Again if anyone has any ideas on how to get this off it would be much appreciated.

Last is a photo of the bubbling passenger side aircon vent trim. has anyone had any experience at re-trimming this section, what did you use, how did you get them out?

Regards,

Jonathon.

Did you take the roof panel out? If so, how hard was it? I need to do it to mine.

No it was really easy, just do not take the fabric off until it is out of the car of you will get brown crap everywhere . The hardest bit is scraping off the old deteriorated foam.

Ill make a write up for it when i go to re install if you need clip and screw locations.

Jonathon

Nail polish remover or Isocol should get the glue off? (test a small bit first so it doesn't eat the leather).

On the 4th put its hard too see the bubbling. Is it on the 'foundry' finish? Or the little Fo-chrome airduct?

Airduct is quick, cheap and easy to replace (screwdriver inside the vent fins and gently pry inwards the two holding clips (use torch, you'll see them), it will then slide out.

The end cap is also easy. Check powerfuluk on YouTube, excellent L322 instructions.

Thanks for the reply :) The air duct itself is fine it is the bubbling on the bottom right of the cover panel (Foundry Finish) that is the drama.

Yep those end caps come off easy for a respray. Check out YouTube for a good step by step at powerfuluk.

Well the roof was all cleaned and re trimmed ready for a re install.

I will put some more up when it comes to installing.

I just used 3 M of felt from an auto trimmer ($35 p/m)

And High Temperature Resistant Tenso grip L17 from the local foam and rubber shop.

Well the doors are a work in progress but this is it so far.

Hated the green and decided to repaint.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74972&stc=1&d=1396173793

Masked off and resprayed it with Dupli Color Fabric and Vinyl. came out really nice and is tough too. Did a durability patch test and it hold up really well.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74973&stc=1&d=1396173793

Redid the Foundry part with a zinc coating.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74974&stc=1&d=1396173793

End result is a 100% improvement, with just the door handle and then removing the glue from the upper section

Just a few more photos of the trim.

The center console has come out so I can give it a clean, paint the sides and start to install the sound blaster and the NFC enabled center arm rest.

Here is the before removal and before paint photos.

One last thing, there is a winged bush and the wings need to be pushed in while pulling gently with a set of pliers. Like picking a lock... I used a very small alen key to push them in.

Today i sanded back the damaged foundry finish on the side and center panels and sprayed them in gloss black like they are in the Vouge and similar to the parts from powerful UK.

Few tips:

1. To get rid of the foundry finish lightly sand (dry 240), then use general purpose thinners to soften and then scrape the paint away. You could sand it but it takes ages and in hind sight i think if you just peel up an edge and use a razor blade to peel away the foundry finish it would be quicker.

2. When you use primer make sure you use a plastic primmer (for the flex) and lightly sand (wet 800). If there are any blemishes or scratches use a body filler after your base coat and re sand (I had scratches around my HDC and Low range control)

3. For the paint I used gloss black enamel as opposed to two pack as I do not have a spray gun and it removes the pressure of getting a gloss out of the can. Where as enamel I can just polish to a shine after if the finish is not good enough off the can.

4. Install.

I will say though and again in hindsight if you are going to use enamel make sure it is going to be installed with in a week as the paint is a bit more forgiving to felx then after a week when it is fully cured.

the photos are of the progress so far the under coat went on perfect and the gloss black is perfect just a shame it was night time in the photo. I will test its durability after a few days. If it is not durable i may just bite the bullet and get them done professionally in two pack or get a compressor and spray gun :). If all else fails i will wrap them in one of those mats you can buy from super cheap auto

Jeez, you're not mucking around are you?:). A whole interior upgrade - nice work. Can't wait to see the final result.

Finally got time to do one of my door handles, pretty happy with the result, just have to replicate it 3 more times...

Wow, fantastic. How long did that take.

Are the materials used in the L322 interior better than say a D3? They seem to be better wearing or easier to recon.

Thanks Man,

From wo to go it took me about 2 months. Including shipping times, I would say if I had everything and was going to do it again it would take me 4 days total work.

The D3 seems to be made of more harder plastics if that makes sense. The RR was really easy to recon tbh.. Materials took to the finish really well and I am impressed with the durability of the finishes so far.

More pictures & info on what you have done to the top of the centre console . Please

Are you talking about the center console lid or the shifter cover?

The lid is standard accept that it has hollowed out section underneath which has a Bluetooth module inside it which you can tap with your phone to connect and play music. The shifter cover is warped in gloss black wrap from ebay.

Hi Jonathon,
Looks like you have done a great job on the trim.
Could you give me a bit of advice on removing the front door trim. I have just sourced a complete trim panel from US to replace the distorted arm rest on mine. It looks like I have to replace the whole panel as the arm rest seems to be sealed onto the panel. I particularly want to avoid problems with the airbag. Are there some detailed instructions somewhere ? or can you give me a few tips ?
thanks in advance.

Have a look at this video, has the removal of the door card as part of the wing mirror install. do not forget to undo all of the plugs :)

The top of the dash has a mud pod from Mud UK

MUD Pod (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/mudpod.html)

In the mud pod is the old MID display, with the Bluetooth OBD tool the same info can be displayed on the Surface or Ipad. BUT since the surface needed a air gap above it for heat to escape the mud pod is used to cover the hole.. Also makes it really easy to remove the surface and to upgrade tech later on. Already measured the hole for a surface 3 and it fits even better then the 2!
