d3 oil leak out of trans sump

hi all im new to this site as i have just purchased a 06 disco 3 and i have just discovered a oil leak on the trans sump i have taken it to the mechanics and they think there is a crack in the sump is this a common problem if so is this going to be a expensive repair and if anyone in perth knows of any good mechanics. I am a little concerned as there is no way that i am aware of to check the trans oil, if anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

If you mean a leak from the automatic transmission, that may be no big deal; if you mean from the transfer case, the Magna Steyr manufactured chunk full of gears downstream of the tranny that provides the 4 wheel drive and the high / low selection, that may not be so routine. Most mechanics can tell the difference between transmission oil and gear oil, hence the leak is probably from the tranny as they indicated.

Page 8 of the pdf below deals with a sealing sleeve that is routinely replaced when the transmission oil pan / filter combo is replaced during a transmission oil change. The reason it is routinely replaced is that it routinely leaks.

Below is a good link on the tear down of the Magna Steyr DD295 transfer case in our 3's and I guess 4's, (where installed!)

Myself, I think I would rather not have to learn about the transfer case and hope for the tranny seal.

There is an Authorised Land rover repairer in Geraldton , don't need to go to Perth , Google Whyat,s . 08-99654333 , if its the trans pan you should be able to fix in T/P maybe just a gasket , have a check of the pan fixings , you can check the oil level from u/neath there is a drain plug and fill plug on left hand side of trans , you will need the correct ZF Life Guard trans oil . there is a google search space at the bottom of the aulro site for looking up info . A new trans pan is not all that expensive if it is cracked .

Hi Mick,
I'm not sure how much time you have on your hand here, if it is the tranny plug, great, fix it and replace the oil, if it is something more sinister and requires the tranny pan to be removed you might want to go straight for a steel pan conversion.

If I understand things correctly an engine mount has to be released nd a bit more work to get a genuine pan back on again. I've never fitted an original tranny pan back I've always gone for the steel pan conversion.

A&B transmissions in Dandenong do a conversion kit with easy to follow instructions, they also do mail order, their service for me has been great, and quick. Don't be tempted by cheaper oil options, as mentioned previously stick with the Lifeguard 6 oil.

Hi all thank for your replies
After getting the trans sump replaced and being told that it is all fixed I have just noticed that it is still leaking bad it is milky oil which is coming out it leaks a lot more when the front end is raised has any one else had this problem or any advice thx

I replaced my plastic pan with a ZF pan and filter, but had a slight leak for a few days until I retorqued the screws. The fluid is light and faintly honey coloured not milky

Where do you think it is leaking. Clean it up and put some cardboard "telltales" to find where your leak is

Hi Grappler,
When I did mine I used the Toyota Black Sealant, whilst it comes from another camp it is really good stuff. Mine has never leaked, just a suggestion.
