anyone got any reasonably priced ones they can recommend....
Yes I know that you can command from the on camera flash or a second speedlight
But I like the idea of wireless remote trigger unit...to fire when I want it too despite what camera settings are.
you can probably still do that in camera also but I'm not that clever:D
I have seen a few units on ebay and there are some reasonably priced units around 50buxish
anyone got one?

I have three RF-603 YongNuo triggers you can try, Lou (along with a YongNuo YN560-III flash with inbuilt matching wireless trigger).

I also have a couple of USYK-3B Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Remote optical triggers you can try. http://www.amazon.com/USYK-3B-Wireless-Remote-Trigger-Pentax/dp/B008M43B2U
These are for Nikon or Pentax. Canon use a different foot.

wouldn't mind having a go with the Yong triggers Ron but do you have the wireless unit that attaches to the camera or do you only have the one thats built in the flash
how did you find using them?

I used to use the Cactus triggers, which worked fairly well. They would misfire every now and then, but the for the price, you can't complain.
I ended up buying some pocketwizard PlusX triggers though. They're the cheapest of the PW's and they work a treat for my use.

yeah I did look in to pocket wizards I think they might be some of the smallest receivers too if I remember rightly

Depends on the... er... style?
I didn't like the Flex ones, they just look odd.
The PlusX's have the same range, but lack other features. I don't need more than 10 channels, and these can strap to the flash on the side.
Pending on your flash though, you'll need the little block that has the cable insert. The Canon 430's don't have it built in.
The Cactus 4's I had were definitely smaller though. I'd take a photo, but I think the Cactus's have been chucked now.

The RF603 are dual purpose. They can be used as a transmitter on camera or as a receiver on the flash.
They seem to work well.
The Cactus V5 may be better units. I sort of wish I'd bought them instead. See http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/125-flashes-lighting-studio/128986-cactus-v5-radio-flash-trigger-review.html
PocketWizard are better again.
Do you have Canon or Nikon, Lou?

Mine should work with your gear, Lou. I'll have to check which cables I have for using the triggers to operate the camera shutter if you want to try that, too.
Although the triggers are RF603N (Nikon), the shutter cables might be for the Canon models (which fit the Pentax, too).
I'll be home tomorrow night.

Cables should be compatible.
I have both Canon and Nikon flashes.

No, I'm referring to the cables that allow the remote triggers to operate the camera shutter. There are several different cables for Nikon.
The RF603 comes as an RF603C (Canon) or RF603N (Nikon). The RF603N works with Pentax but to use it as a remote shutter release with Pentax requires one to have a particular Canon shutter cable.
As I said earlier, the C and N models have, apparently, different hotshoe connections when used as a remote flash trigger.

Hi Ron
I had a very quick play with your triggers today....they work well...
here is a picture hahahahaha dont judge me I have never used the flash gun off camera before I don't have any fancy umbrellas and I don't even know how to change the power on my flash gun yet or set anything manually :D
I had a play with getting a black back drop, the can was probably not the best subject due to its reflectivity and I only had a rolled up piece of A3 paper to attempt to direct some flash light back :D

and Yes I know my veranda needs a bloody good sweep!! hahahahah this is straight off camera taken this afternoon outside on my front veranda, I appreciate that the flash line on the can is distracting i didnt really move anything around much just wanted to see if I could do it:)

Excellent, Lou. They are the older 603 triggers. I can't recall what differences there are with the mark II.
One thing which mine lacks is the ability, in a multi flash setup, is to easily select only some flashguns to fire or all to fire - something that is, apparently, easy with the Cactus.
The advantage of the Yongnuo is the cost.
Keep playing with them. I'm in no hurry to get them back. I've got several other triggers here.

thanks
I have a macro lense on the way so perhaps I can have a play when that turns up too.

they might be the go only critisim I have of yours is the location of the on off makes it really really difficult to actually turn the trigger on and off while attached to the speedlight its really hard to get the finger in to do it

Yes. Also, if one wants to change channel, having to pull the batteries out to get to the DIP switches.

Hi
I got some generic ones from eBay, the main consideration is that they work with the canon flash which apparently needs a higher trigger voltage than most other flashes.
I have a mix of Canon, Metz Hammer Heads and Vivitar Variable flash guns
Strobist will give you more info than you will ever need :D

Oops. I posted the link to the RF-60 flash, not the Cactus V6.
Yes, the Cactus triggers do look a little large.
