View Full Version : Hiring a car trailer

Folks - I've rung Kennards and none of their outlets in Brisbane still rents car trailers. I've been through the U-Haul website looking for one too...... None are available.
Does anyone know where I might be able to hire one from? I need it in May - for 3 days and to go into NSW......I figured that if my trip to the Coolatai vintage tractor pull ends up a solo mission, then I'd drag Matilda behind the Defy......;)

and you wouldnt just drive matilda down because?
if need be and its only to tow matilda down in I think I could make my big trailer available and will fabricate in custom tie downs for the job.

Well, I might end up driving Matilda down.....but a 700 plus km trip for a weekend away in a Series 1 kind of eats into the actual weekend! :p
That's a very gracious offer, Dave.....But I am hoping to find a hire version so to not put anyone out.

yeah, cause my trailer is just burning up thousands of wheel miles every day....
no in convenience, but come have a look at it first... its kind of stereotypically me.

So, I'm guessing that maybe your trailer might eat into my weekend more than a 75km/h drive to Coolatai and back.....:D
Anyone else know of a car trailer hire mob in the Western burbs or preferably, the switch?

OK. That would be great. If I have another vehicle coming, and if they can stand it, I'll just drive Matilda. :)

Dan,
Hello again from Brisbane.
The loneliness of the long distance Land Rover drive....
Its' been more than a few decades since I tried that on myself - every Christmas my uncle would hitch up the family caravan to his S1 88" and haul it from the farm at Singleton over to Forster-Tuncurry and back for the extended family to use at the beach. A few of those times as little kids my cousin and I went with him and it was a long slow trip, especially since we went via Gresford, Dungog, Gloucester and Nabiac to avoid the dreaded Buladelah mountain. Exciting though with the long hills, noise (engine, cicadas), semi crashes, smell of the bush and hot oil etc. Not much by way of in-flight entertainment other than I spy and a water bag, billy tea, johnny cakes and pack of corned beef sandwiches. Maybe a watermelon if you were lucky.
Anyway, its' an art if not a labour of love.
My suggestion would be to leave Friday afternoon to go through Boonah to Stanthorpe and camp over at Glenlyon Dam or Texas and then cruise on to Coolatai via Yetman on the Saturday morning. Come home on as direct a route as you can find.
Still thinking of going myself one way or another.
Cheers,
Neil

you might not need a car trailer,,
just a dual axle furniture trailer might be big enough---

Thanks for the suggestions folks cos it seems no one hires car trailers these days.....in Brisbane anyway.
Happier to drive the old girl if I'm not solo.....I will take Friday off to get there.....but reckon I'd want to drive all the way there to make my time at the pull worth it.....really keen to get a few Landys out there, even non series, as the local farmers are quite honoured to have us coming and are keen for us to be a part of it.....if I can find a trailer, I'll do it that way, unless we get a Series convoy which would deem driving her there more doable in my mind anyway. :)

Dan,
Hello again from Brisbane.
I seem to recall that the BP in Oxley Rd suburb of like name were a rental outlet for trailers, including tandem car trailers. May well still do - I could check.
Not sure what the lesser of two evils actually is - driving a Series 1 700 odd kms or towing a loaded tandem trailer the same distance.
Not sure if you have actually been to Coolatai before, but you may know the region well from UNE days.
The last time that I drove between Moree and Brisbane, I actually came through Warialda to Yetman and on to Texas and Stanthorpe via Glenlyon and thence to Brisbane via Killarney - all in a diesel 4 X4 of Japanese providence.... Coolatai is roughly mid-way between Warialda and Yetman. All very scenic and a great drive.
The region is aptly named the north west slopes and New England Tableland for good reason - there being more than the odd windy bit with hills scattered thereabouts. The Stanthorpe to Texas leg is quite hilly as are parts from Yetman to Texas away from the river and floodplain.
The Bruxner from Tenterfield to Yetman is not too bad as is the more northerly route via Leyburn and Inglewood to Yetman.
So, not entirely sure that towing a vehicle through there is any great shakes either. But then it's a fair old ask of a 60 year old vehicle too. Just one opinion of many and no doubt will be open to challenge and others' experiences.
Cheers,
Neil

G'day Neil,
Yes, I do know the country all around there from my time working at UNE, and agreed, it is beautiful country.....one reason I'm trying to get this trip up and running. :)
I don't really mind driving Matilda there as long as I have some support should things go wrong - I'd prefer to tow her on a trailer, but what shall be will be. I can actually sort most break down issues on her now - I'm getting quite the cocky mechanic aren't I, :p but another vehicle and my tow rope would be good insurance!:D
I don't expect any trouble. She holds her fluids after her rebuild, even over a long hot summer and she now sports a new electronic ignition system. I also carry a traditional 25D dissy just in case. Still, it's not so long since her rebuild and I just want to tread lightly until I know her inside out.
I've rung all sorts of servos etc and simply can't find a trailer. If you are going past, ask the question sure.....at the end of the day, if others are coming and are willing to drive at S1 pace, which means taking most of Friday to get there, then I'm mad enough to do it.....:)

Well, thanks - I do need the servo to be kinda near Ipswich if possible. I have rung servos that advertise the hire of car trailers. None I have found, still actually do.
I'll make a list tomorrow of all the servos within a 25km radius, ring them all, and post the results.

Hi Dan,
You can hire them in Strathpine :) half day, full day and weekend rates. Let me know if you are interested and I can get you some prices etc.

Thanks Jerry, but Strathpine is too far away for me....I'll ring every servo in Ipswich tomorrow....if other places hire car trailers still, then why not anywhere near me? No Uhaul servos have any, I know that for a fact.

Would a Series 3 (and a tow strap) help your cause ??:D

If I drive her there yes, it would be some insurance. I'm not expecting trouble, but it is a long way out of my 100km RACQ tow limit! But again, I'd prefer to trailer her there. I'm doing the servo 25km radius ring around tomorrow. :)

Dan, I am pretty sure the 7/11 at Silkstone has car trailers for hire, the big drawback about the hire trailers is you can usually only carry 1300kg. Matilda may come in under that, I am not sure. Also have you tried the likes of Kennards? I would still love to come, but am struggling to keep one vehicle on the road at the moment.:(
Cheers, Mick.
P.S.
I just googled 7/11 they hire the U Haul trailers and as you have pointed out U Haul don't seem to have car trailers available for hire. Kennards have them listed though, but the load carrying capacity is only 1200kg. Maybe a flat bed truck would be a better option, I am sure there would be somewhere to unload it at Coolatai and it should be possible to find somewhere to load it locally around Ipswich.

Kennards don't hire car trailers in Qld any more - I have already tried them. If I need a flat bed truck, I'll either drive Matilda, just go in Grover - or just not go. I'll send apologies for options 2 and 3! How do I weigh Matilda? Is it on my rego docs?

......an unladen 86 inch weight is 2702lbs which is 1225kg - over the hire limit.
Thanks for helping folks.

Dan,
Hello again from Brisbane.
All seems to be getting a bit dire and the logistics rapidly taking on the proportions of finding a missing airliner....
Flatbed trucks, trailers and what not only get one vehicle there - two I suppose if you count the tow vehicle. And at a bugger of a cost if you have to hire them - don't suppose the self drive option is all that cheap with fuel and potential repairs.
Has to be a simpler way to get around this - just haven't worked it out yet other than possibly volunteer to push!
That's actually approaching a serious offer - I am pretty much fired up to going to Coolatai in May and working around the usual barriers of Mrs S3ute and her disdain for my long-standing enthusiasm for rustic p___-artistry weekends in obscure country towns. Besides which she is probably terrified at the real prospect of waking up some Monday to find a Farmall and Fowler parked in the backyard.
So, a viable but still cunning plan remains the order of the day.
From a simplistic viewpoint the challenge seems to boil down to one of two approaches. Either getting the costs and logistics down, or making the exercise seem so contemporarily attractive as to make one want to say "stuff the costs and logistics" and go anyway.
The wilds of the New England hills beckon, and what better a target?
Cheers,
Neil

What if I was to tow my trailer (as detailed in a previous post) down to switch behind said S3. Transfer trailer to grover, load Matilda, return to S3 (formally known as "Nic") get in convoy and mosey on down the road.

Hello again,
I thought your earlier hint of an offer had been overlooked.
Anyway, goes to show that things can be achieved if you want to them to badly enough.
Over to Dan....

There is truth in the old saying that "good things come to those who wait".
However, the risk is that it is often just the crumbs left over from those who don't....

let me know if you need tie down gear or the like....
could you also measure the wheel track, becuase I just realised something I forgot.
my small trailer fits a suzuki sierra on it and matilda i dont think is much bigger.
what I dont have readily to hand is the overall dimensions of a series 1 shorty.
if it fits on the green trailer you can take that if you need.

Well, it's a nice thought for sure, but also more than likely wishful thinking at this late stage.
I am about to head off interstate next week for a litttle while and thence back to the Dark Continent for about three weeks in mid-April. Not complaining there mind you, because my diary suggests an Easter of idle beast-musing back in Hwange NP in not entirely unbearable living conditions.
All the better to creating the appropriate ambience for pondering over the nuances of series Land Rover renovation versus restoration. Most of the beaters are enthusiasts for the black oval brand.
Also, for getting in serious training for Coolatai ("nuvver cupla middies there luv and a pack of Nobbies").... Doesn't quite translate with "a couple of Zambezis and biltong there young Sheba" but the gestures, arm positions and other actions are fairly similar.
Cheers,
Neil
