Hi Everyone,

Updated 16/01/2015

Trays are now on sale for $149!

You can now order these trays from my website: Overland Designs (http://overlanddesigns.com.au/)

This Battery Tray replaces the factory tray on 1999-2004 Discovery 2 models (either TD5 or V8 engines), and allows fitting of two Optima D34 sized batteries. The tray uniquely incorporates a mount for the TD5's ECU (computer).

The Battery Tray uses existing factory mounting holes and bolts, and requires no modifications to your vehicle for fitting. It is CAD designed and CNC fabricated from mild steel, then powder coated with a zinc undercoat and a satin black top coat. The kit contains mounting bolts for ECU, and protective pinch weld for exposed edges on vehicle.

These are a revised design that is better finished than the previous trays. They have been laser cut and precision folded to a very high standard - I'm very happy with how these have turned out.

If you'd like any more information, either visit the website Overland Designs (http://overlanddesigns.com.au/) or send me a PM.

Cheers, Carl

Hi Kev,

The panel between the headlights and the engine bay is different between the models; specifically the headlight cables exits the light higher on the D2A, and they've deleted a mounting bolt that runs into this panel (exists on D2, not on D2A).

The design change (on my tray) was to allow extra room for this cable, and to remove the mounting bolt hole.

As Optima Batteries are all AGM batteries they do require specialized charging conditions. AGM batteries require 14.4v to charge correctly and a standard car alternator will only output 13.6v.

This is from Optimas website. Is this why the red arc charger fitting is needed?

carldjohnston
5th April 2014, 10:00 AM
Hi Coastie,

I'm pretty sure that the D2 puts out over 14V by itself; I've fitted a DC-DC charger to maximise the charge in my AUX battery, I don't think it's a necessity however.

My starter battery has been fine (red top), and it's been fitted for over four months.

Disco 2s will easily charge the Yellow Optima - with the DC-DC charger fitted you will actually increase time taken to charge the aux battery as the unit reduces the current fed to the aux.

How are you going with a universal tray/Box double skinned against exhaust heat to mount a compressor and catch can. Even a side basket to warm food in foil trays?

What about a spare battery/ Inverter/ airpump box to fit the rear side box location?

Hi Brad,

Looks like you've got a wish list :)

I've been meaning to send you a photo of what I've come up with (it's a little rough at the moment). It's is a little plate that mounts on the passenger side of the firewall and provides a flat surface to mount whatever you like; I'd suggest it's not strong enough for a battery, but for a catch can or compressor it would work great. It doesn't have a heat shield, and I'm not sure adding anything there would really guard against the heat the turbo generates, I suspect that eventually heat would soak anything in that location. I can be convinced otherwise about the heat shield though :)

I'll post a photo up tomorrow when it's light.

Cheers, Carl

Take off the horn and it's mount. Make a bracket to bolt to the firewall that provides a flat surface for a box to mount on. The front of the box can bolt down with tabs to other existing holes in the inner guard. I knocked one up that's still in progress, holds catch can on outside, manifold for breathers, compressor and solenoid for air free spool for winch.

Hi Guys,

This is what I came up with for my compressor, it's a prototype shape at the moment and would be refined if this was to be sold. I'd probably end up putting nutserts in where the fuel cutoff switch, horn and bottom mount attach for ease of installation.

As always I'm open to comments and suggestions.

Hi Everyone,

Well, after a month or so travelling around the Kimberley, then a week recovering from travelling, I'm back on board. My apologies to those of you who have been waiting for some new Battery Tray's to be completed, you could say I've been doing some product testing :)

Last week John and I started a batch of Trays, these are the new type that will fit both the D2 (pre-facelift) and D2A (facelift) models; we're aiming to have these completed and ready to ship in around a week.

The new trays will be Powder coated mild steel, the same as the last run, only these will be finished to a higher standard, and can now accommodate the D2A.

We'll be selling the trays for $179 plus postage, and I'm happy to take orders for them now, just PM me for a shipping quote.

If you've registered your interest in this thread, then I'll PM you with an update.

Would one be available uncoated or even unassembled? Just that I have been planning one to incorporate the original lid and storage for the jack and a false floor, as the optimas are shorter, to fit the relays and winch solenoid in.

Hi clubagreenie,

I'm not sure you'd get the lid on without modifying the lid and tray. The batteries sit a little higher than the original (as they're rotated 90 degrees, are actually longer than the original is wider, so they stay level). With the ECU mount on the back, clearance to the bonnet is minimal. There's also very little room for the jack once all is bolted in, but you could probably mount it in place of the ECU (as you have a V8?).

There is room underneath the tray that could be used for a solenoid, but I'd be mounting that where you could see and/or access it.

Did you want to share your plans? Perhaps I could save you the fabrication trouble :)

Cheers, Carl

I can fit the batteries and jack as I use the ECU space which is why the batts are raised. but if the terminals are towards the middle of the box (both so they face each other) they JUST fit inside the raised corners of the lid. And yeah V8 with is joyous consumption.

Hi Mick,

Not sure what changes in a light conversion, but the tray is designed to fit both D2 and D2A. I don't imagine an issue if you have the standard battery box fitted, and it's mostly unmodified. I'm happy to refund if it doesn't fit.

Hi xaymaca,

The extra little bits are there to protect the battery and ECU from rubbing.

The longer piece of pinchweld should be applied to the front bulkhead, across the front edge of the car where the batteries may touch.

The short piece of pinchweld is to protect the ECU and should be placed behind the tray, where the ECU would touch. The foam goes on the ECU where this pinchweld would touch; this is for further protection.

Glad you like it!

Hey guys, Just ordered a tray and would like to know where others have mounted the battery solenoid / relay? Cheers Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your order. I have a Redarc BCDC40 mounted to the side of mine, depending on if you have a TD5 or V8, you may have some room on the back side to mount a relay also. I have also mounted circuit breakers to the bottom rear of my tray.

I don't suggest you mount anything under the batteries, as access would be difficult.

Looking at the Traxide kits, it looks quite small compared to some solenoids I've seen, and should fit neatly on the side - I suggest you go with one of these if you haven't already purchased one.

Hi Carl,

I have submitted an order via the website. On the EFT page it listed BSB and Account Number but not an Account Name. I've guessed and hope its Overland Designs otherwise the payment will bounce. I'm also quite interested in the rear door table design once complete.

Thanks,

Hi Signal1,

Thanks for your order!

Sending to "Overland Designs" will work, I hope it has more to do with the account numbers than the name :)

I've updated the site to display this now, thanks :)

Cheers,

Carl

As a bank employee (please don't hate me) - as long as BSB and account number are correct, money will get where it is sent.

Howdy, does anyone know if Carl still does a battery tray for the D2? I can't message him, his message bank is full. [bigsad]

I can see this thread is quote old. I'm not intending to step on anyone's toes, but I can help out if any of you are still looking for a D2 or D2a battery box to suit 2X D34 Optima batteries.

ONLY FOUR CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN STOCK.

Dual battery box for D2 and D2a 2X D34M Optimas

The battery box is made from 304 grade stainless steel and is designed to accept 2X Optima D34 or D34M batteries (not included). You will be able to use the bolts from your factory tray.

If you are interested in a tray to mount under the battery box where you can secure whatever you choose to it, this will be an extra $40. PLEASE NOTE: This requires two holes to be drilled into the body just below the wheel arch in-between the second row of mounting bolts for the battery box, template supplied. I suggest using rivnuts and M6 bolts to secure it, but nuts and bolts will work too.

Hi Jazzman,
Are you still making these? Or have any kicking around that you didn't end up selling?
I don't have FaceBook, so this is the only way I can get in touch. I've sent you a PM also.
Cheers mate,
Mark.

Hmm... I have one of his pre-production models. It is installed in a car, but I no longer really need it. I'd need to scratch around to find the clamp etc., but Carl did a good job with these. PM me if you are interested.

Oh, be patient. I don't always check in to AULRO. The Facebook style animosity is increasing, and I don't like it. But I will check in.
