As the title says I need to know where the numbers (chassis, etc.) are located to identify an early Series I to save it from the crusher, I have asked for a value in the "What's it Worth section" and any identifying features to look for, Thanks in advance, Regards Frank.

Hi Frank

If its an 80" then the chassis number should be on top of the LHS engine mount. It is a flat topped bracket welded on top of the chassis rail.

There is likely 2 groups of numbers. a 2 3 or 4 group which is a chassis build serial number and then a second, usually different font, starting 86???? or 866???? or 061????? or 16?????? or 26?????? or 36??????. It is the second group that is the chassis/car number.

Some Queensland assembled vehicles have the number stamped on top on the LHS chassis rail between the engine mount and the front crossmember (the one with the steering relay)

The ones to look for are the ones with the "fish plates" holding on the front bumper, not the ones where the bumper is held on the same way as later Series/Defenders up to the current day. Where the bumper bar has a pair of plates that slip over the chassis dumbirons.

Early fabricated firewall (flat panels not pressed)

Other things to look for are the rear cross member where the rear PTO holes are not tubed.

Thanks Diana, I'll send that info on to my Son, any idea of what they're worth, this Land Rover is being offered for scrap by a car dealer along with a few dozen other cars.
If it is of no value to a restorer, it will be loaded with the other scrap cars and crushed, if it is of some value then it will be driven on to the tray top and brought back to the ACT, which will mean an extra trip to Cooma and back, I would hate to see it scrapped, but I don't have anymore room to keep it down the coast here, Regards Frank.

Hi Frank

It all depends upon what it is, what year and any history. Snowy Mountains Hydro scheme vehicles are popular to restore and the records for all sales to SMHEC/SMHEA still exist.

It could be as low as $100 or as high as thousands $.

My son has sent the pics, they are in a number of emails and I don't seem to be able to load into an Album in "Gallery" under an Album named Series I, any ideas on how I can get them loaded, Regards Frank.
P.S. Diana, can I email these pics to you or to anyone who wants to have a look, Regards Frank.

Hi Frank

Edit: I just saw your photo's but I will leave these instructions for anyone that is wanting to know how to post their pictures

To get the pictures to show on here, open them up from the email attachment then right click and save to a folder, I have made a folder for these temporary pictures on my desktop that is simply called 'downloaded photo's'.

Then go through the usual procedure using the 'Manage Attachments' at the bottom of this page, to attach them from that folder onto your posting on here.

I can tell you a little bit about the age of that Land Rover from the firewall shown in your photo's.

It's a 86", 1954 -55.

If its got the original engine and was built in 1954 it should have a Siamese bore engine and then if it's a mid 1955 onwards build it most likely a would have a Spread bore engine fitted.

The engine number is stamped vertically sideways at the front and side of the block, just in front of the exhaust manifold.

The Chassis number could be in a couple of places, but I would start by looking at the top plate of the chassis, on the vehicles left hand side just under that opening of the radiator support panel ( The opposite side to the steering relay ).

The air cleaners were changed in 1955 from the type with a precleaner to the later fluted top style. Is the aircleaner still with the land Rover?

I just added another pic with the air cleaner, sitting in the cab, at the bottom of pic, it will be a couple of days before I can get the chassis/engine #'s, I will post ASAP, thanks for your information. BTW I may have traced the previous owner, whose name, property name and name of town appear on the drivers side guard above the Tare weight, Regards Frank.

Thanks Jim, I don't have it in my hands yet, my son will pick it up when he has finished scrapping all the other cars there, it won't be till next week before I can get a look.
I'm contemplating just cleaning it up, remove the hand made roof and wood tray, refit the rear alloy tub, get it driving. The brake pedal is hard as a rock, so it will at least need a master cylinder, clutch works, motor turns, probably need the radiator rodded (at least) a set of tyres and put it on the market for a restorer, that is if I don't fall in love with it.
At least when I sell it it will be a runner and ready for rego, least likely that way it will stay away from the scrap yard, will post more pics when I get it here, Regards Frank.

Hi Keith

The vehicle looks to be from a private owner rather than something like the SMHEA, and yes it is an 86 as mentioned above. The firewall alone would be worth more than $150 if you parted it out. Many of these are rusted beyond repair.

While lots of people are interested in the 80" because they are the original models, I find the 86 and 88 models more usable for weekends out etc.

My son seems to think the firewall is aluminium, could this be right, also was wondering why the owner would put the Tare weight on the guard, was it the law back then, I will be leaving the "signwriting" intact.
It's funny, now that I have seen it I am becoming attached to it, I can just see myself taking a run out to Bendethra, looks like I'm going to have to start finding bits for it, Thanks all for your information about this vehicle, can't wait to find the numbers, Regards Frank.

No, its a steel firewall. Nice early wiper motor thats hard to find and the bakelite steering wheel centre and horn push thats repairable. Front guards look good. I would keep it if I were you:D

I'm thinking along those lines, seems I have an alloy roof with side windows and back door sitting in the yard, same as the ones I've seen on this forum, so I might have a wagon I can build up.
Any clues where I might be able to download a factory workshop manual, even if it's only for the engine and drivetrain, Regards Frank.

Try this link, I haven't done so myself as I have a near complete set of manuals for all series Land Rovers.

........ Regards Frank.

Tare weight and owner's name were required to be shown on goods vehicles in NSW up until some time in the sixties.

Picking it up tomorrow, ex owner put in a battery, poured some fuel down the carb and it started up and ran, taking a couple of rims/tyres down to get it on the trailer, looks like I might be able to drive it on, hope everything else (drivetrain) works also, will post up some numbers as soon as I can get at them, Regards Frank.
