I'm a mechanical novice, but keen to learn - so I've bought myself something to learn on. A 1997 300Tdi 130.

Purchased sight unseen, haven't collected it yet. Hopefully it will turn out OK and be something I can play around with without fear of putting my daily driver off the road.

Seller unsure of when timing belt was last changed - so that is notionally first up. My plan is to stump up the $10 for the instructional video from the trailerfitters toolbox and give it a go!

Does anyone recognise the vehicle and know anything about it? Its been in the Benella area. PM me if you'd prefer. I may have bought a lemon, but it's not then end of the world if I have.

not sure why you would want to spend $10 on a video on how to do a single maintenance item when you can buy the rave CD suitable to the vehicle from the shop and then eyeball your way though the search engine to find a bunch of how to threads with all kinds of extra info.

the words Timing belt change in the basic search box bring up some 500 odd answers and if you go advanced and limit it to the technical forums that will probably become a lot more managable.

welcome to the forums mate, it is what Land Rover Assist should have been in the first place.

Tim, I have the locking pins/bolts for doing the timing belt if you require them:).
It is rather easy to do, a novice could knock it over in a day.

Curious on the plans for this one!?:)

I have Rave for my Td5 and will definitely get the 300tdi edition too. I find the videos suit my learning style and have no problem coughing up a tenner for it.

Because not everyone is aware of the resources available and where to find them. At least he's here now and hopefully willing to look, listen and learn.

The 300tdi info should be on the Rave CD that you have.

Pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully the return trip will go OK. I'm catching the train up to get it, so I won't have any tools etc with me. Who knows if it will even have a wheel brace/jack. Fingers crossed.

Good luck with it. I trailered mine home when I bought it, which worked out well considering I towed it 1200km, but broke the main shaft of the gearbox within 400km of driving it once I got it home. Would have been a really depressing trip home if I had driven it. But in saying that, it's not something that happens to everyone. Again, good luck and enjoy it!

Finally got the roadworthy today and transferred ownership... very happy that its all done and dusted. Massive thanks to Ian at MTE4x4 for accommodating me at short notice and seeing through a massive job.

List of work done....
- New clutch inc throw-out bearing support tube, release fork
- New rear main seal and T seals
- partial dismantling of transfer, o-rings, seals, thrust washer clearances, repair to seized centre diff gear stick
- 5-speed output seal, input shaft bearing
- full set of new superpro suspension bushes and A-frame ball joint
- new power steering pump
- steering tie rod ends, wheel alignment
- ball joint pitman arm
- rocker cover gasket and tappets
- P gasket and water pump, machined water pump jacket
- new bottom radiator hose
- new alternator pulley
- door repairs (reinforced internal frame, lock fixes, water shedder membrane)
- wheel bearings - front and rear
- reverse light switch and new reverse light, other lights replaced/fixed
- repair broken drive flange bolt
- new windscreen
- new rear disk brake shields
- all fluids refreshed inc brakes
- all filters
- and drilling out a sheared seat belt bolt (silly me)

I'm a little disappointed I've had to do so much work, and some of the smaller/easier jobs I would have liked to tackle myself under less time pressure, but am very happy with the condition of the vehicle now, feels really tight on the road, and should be a manageable job for me to maintain from this starting point. The best thing is it is rust free, and will now have a very long life.

My plan now is to have a go at the discs on my td5 130, get that going again, and then think about the timing belt on the Tdi. A few bibs and bobs on their way from paddocks....

I have to say, I'm really enjoying driving the Tdi ... can't quite put my finger on why .... but I think I might prefer driving it to the Td5! Maybe its just that its new/different. The fuel economy seems very good too.

I wonder how the other half would feel about a 130 Puma just to complete the set? I value my life too much to even suggest it, let alone do it!

Its certainly a big list of items for RW.
Still, as you say, makes it a really good starting point.

She's a good looking vehicle, well done on the purchase.
