Do not waste your money on an eBay key fob. They cannot be reprogrammed to your car despite what the sellers might say.

Your only option is to order through the dealer quoting your VIN.

Cost used to be around $350 and it took about 6 weeks.

Been there done that.

In my case, a Sydney dealer had changed the lockset but hadn't updated Land Rover's database with the new lockset code. When the new key arrived, it didn't work nor did it fit. We have been unable to find out the lockset code to order the correct key.

One cannot decode the lockset info either, according to BBS Guy (BBS Spy on RangeRover.net) who makes the RovaCom and Nanocom.

We tried to read that NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTORS COP8622 when we first got into the P38 many years ago. nearly 10 actually.
It was a definate no no, locked, and a very secure processor at the time.
obviously containing the rolling code algorithm, and pre programmed for each specific vehicle via the 4 pads present on the PCB.

We could monitor its output and translate that into a Hex data stream, different every time you pressed a button, which i believe is now reverse engineer able to get the original 3 byte ID from the stream, but not by us.
However it would, at the time, have proved easier to reverse engineer the Motorola CPU of the BeCM. much weaker and containing the same algorithm.
In any event we passed on that and stuck to the diagnostics, although we did reverse engineer the BeCM CPU enough to provide our SM035 unlock software.

These days the COP Processor, like so many others, is quite probably hacked, and we get offers all the time, and for a few thousand pounds, or dollars you could no doubt get the code it contains given to you, but the question is, is it worth it any more?

As a result I still only have one working key.

A new lockset was about $1600 so I'm not going that route!

Hi P38, that is what I suspected, Its a bit of a money spinner for Landrover hey, The Pcb is probably a $2 item out of china. Nothing like a good markup.
To be fair, all business are in business to make money myself included but (and I was quoted $375) this is a bit rich.
Still What other options do I have..... probably none :)
cheers

Other options? None.

And you probably need to know if you need a key 1 or key 2. (We won't talk about keys 3 and 4.)

I believe than most new cars have similar costs for keyfobs.

$375 is a good price! The major LR outlet in Brisbane quoted me north of $600 (cash upfront) and if it didn't work...for whatever reason then it was tough luck...

I ended up obtaining one through my daughter who was living in the UK and who purchased it via a local LR dealer for 150 quid. She posted it to me for 6 quid.

However, LR gave her the wrong key and fob. Was only when I sent her a close up photo of the working key and after much prodding from my daughter did they finally revisit the issue and... behold !!! delivered the correct one with a new fangled L322 leather key ring attached. Wrong key in wrong envelope apparently when despatching... so I have a spare but perfectly good setup which is useless, except perhaps for a future transplant...

EDIT: neighbour lost all his stuff (laptop/car keys etc) from his hotel room (5 star) a couple of years ago. Quoted replacement cost of key (with remote) for his Saab was close to $1000...

Ima hearing you,
I had a VW Crafter (dont go there) and it cost something like $800 for a replacement key as VW only sell keys as a pair evidently. So you get 2 for your $800, how convenient is that hey?

Melb city LR want $375 or $325 ( I forget what $ for what MHz, the 400 something was more $ than the 300MHz or something)
They did the right thing by me when I bought my new Puma a couple of years ago so I tend to stick with them.
Ill probably go with them, Ill have to find out what happens if the locks have been changed when we get to that bridge.
I guess that the immobiliser is the next victim of redundancy and will be ripped out if possible - go for a $200 central locking setup.
open for suggestions

Other options? None.

You could always go for a second hand key with the BECM as a package deal but it might be easier to find a certain plane than to find 2 keys in a wrecking yard RR.

You can turn off the immobiliser via diagnostics. You then have the option to just get a steel Key. I got a couple of new cases with blank blades for $10 each, had the blades cut for 25 each and was able to transplant the innards from the single key I had that was falling to bits. I now have a new fully functioning remote key with transponder, one that looks the part but has no innards but will open the car plus the old steel blade that again will open the car

If the immobilizer was turned off these keys will start the car

do you still have the old key fob, i can repair it if is not too bad. i can supply a single second hand remote and programe it to your becm. i might also be able to fit a cheap remote central locking kit and make it operate the original security system (up to 1998 i have done and it works, but there is a slight change in 99 onwards system so would require some rethinking).

Rupert,

I have two remotes, one which was incorrectly supplied by LR, and another I was given.

Can either be reprogrammed to suit my P38A? I do have one working remote. If so, I can arrange to get a key cut to suit.

hi Ron
the new remote might be just on the wrong frequency. does the blade that came on it from rover fit the lock mechanically? have you had a lock set change? to get remotes programmed i need: the 9 digit fob code (i can read it from the becm it worked with) or the bar code for that lockset or the chassis number the key is for.
regards Roop

Hi Rupert,

No, the blades are different. There was a lockset change but it seems the LR database was not updated with the bar code from the new lockset. Maybe I can get the fob code from the BECM tomorrow. I have these numbers listed on my computer:

F1013063053969F10

And

13963053969

So I'll have to get the RovaCom out recheck the BECM. I'll check to see if I still have the paperwork for the fob I bought based on my VIN.

I do have one working fob.

if i understand corectly then, if you ask rover for the bar code for your chassis number, it should match the new key you ordered from rover. sometimes when the locksets were changed they left the bar code sticker for the new locks on the reciever unit under the parcel shelf.

hi Ron
the new remote might be just on the wrong frequency. Ron's car is now 433MHz as the lockset was part of a frequency upgrade warranty claim. The replacement key he ordered is 315MHz.

Yes, we hoped that the Alto mechanic had done that but, alas, when we checked, he had removed the bar code but not updated the LR database.

We didn't know any of this until we started investigating why the new key didn't match.

I didn't realise, until Scouse just mentioned it, that my car had a freq change.
