Just had a call from Rhys at Furious Performance.
He said that the converter is history, been running on metal for who knows.Looks like he'll have to get the pump done as well.
He'll let me know what the damage is later today.:(
Not a happy camper at the moment. [bawl]

the rest of the transmission is ok though?
I would be interested too see how much the pump rebuild and TC replacement cost.
The guys in Melb supposedly have a stronger one available now.
Not overly happy with mine but i is better since a secondhand TC was put in.....
What were the symptoms? Any shuddering on lockup? or just hunting lockup?

He did mine too - it's been going strong for years since.:)
There isn't much he doesn't know about these boxes and on how to make them last, but I feel your pain - I remember what it was like being told the same thing...

He's trying to keep it around the 5g mark, but you never know with these boxes.
I know its in good hands tho..:)

If you need any internal components, I have most of 5L40E parts left from conversion.
The box in my 2003 was ex X5 BMW, and with only worn clutch plates.

Well I heard from Rhys today and he asked if I knew if the car had a chip or any other go faster system in it. Nooo I said.
When he took it down to his local landy spec to check on it before he pulled the transmission apart,he said that it went exceptionally good, apparently I've got one of the go faster models..
The bloke there did a check and couldnt find any go faster bits on it,so I'm stoked.:arms:
The pump will be done early next week as the bloke had a couple other jobs to do first.
So hopefully I'll have it back Thursday/Friday next week.
Cant wait,miss the beast already..

Gaz, a quality retune provides an amazing difference.
Several of the larger established tuning companies will be untraceable to the dealer. However if they flash the engine ecu it will remove it

haha - my comment was actually a warning - not a recommendation.
Many people have left the dealer with the smile gone and a puzzled WTF is going on...

Harlie,
I respect your concern.
Me thinks its the way it was run in that I have more ooooph than the normal TD6,but I could be wrong.
Had a call from Rhys this morning, the upgraded converter wont be ready until late next week.:censored:
So it looks like the week after I get it back.grrrrr
As a comparison,we have 60 MB Actros 2644's at work.
Some of them are real slug boxes, some go ok and a few go like the clappers.
All were delivered within 1 month.
As for a workhorse, much prefer Volvo or Scania. Merc's are just so so(a lot of the guys think there crap as well).

Harlie,
I respect your concern.
....
Gaz, I think we still have a misunderstanding...
My warning or concern, is that the dealer will remove the nice tune while "fixing" your car which you don't want. Don't let anyone reflash the engine ECU.
Personally I think a retune will speed up the failure, not cause it. All boxes if not serviced will fail. there are some real early batches that have issues with bonding which will fail, serviced or not. Let Rhys work his magic, then service it regularly. You won't have any issues with your tuned car.
It is well know on here that mine is tuned....
Are you getting the HD converter from MLB? Low stall or standard?

Hi Harlie,
As far as I know it was only at the dealers to see if they could see what if anything was coming up re the transmission.
Am hoping that the oomph is still there when I pick it up from Rhys.
Getting the HD one from Austra Torque Engineering(road blaster).
Is there another mob that does one?
cheers

Hey guys
Mine started to surge at low revs on the weekend.. typical torque converter problems.
Took it into Russels Automatics here on the Gold Coast this morning. They said it will cost $2500 if only needs converter/valve block and pump. (upgraded/modified pump and valve block) seems cheap?? but can reach $6,000 for a full rebuild.. fingers crossed it aint stuffed!
They had 2 rangies in the shop so I am pretty sure they know what they are doing.. also a mate took his D3 there years ago and said the rebuild was good.
Looks like I will be keeping this car for another few years now!

Update:
Had a call from Rhys this morning.Gearbox is in,but waiting on a dowel(apparently there are 2,only have 1),so it looks as if I wont get the beast back until next week.:censored:
He's rang around everywhere to find one. There's supposedly one in the post, but you never know when the post will arrive these days.

Another Update....:D
GOT MY RANGIE back yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Still go likes the clappers(gooody):p.
Gearbox clunks a bit when down shifting, but I think when it gets used to my driving style,it will be ok. MPG was better on the return than what I've got out of it before Rhys got his hands on it..:D
So this little chappy is very happy.
Looking forward to some very comfortable miles in her now.
cheers

Mine clunks a bit into first now after its rebuild but I think that is part of the upgraded 1st gear from a dunny door. Did Rhys do that for you?

No clunks in 5L50! Smooth, almost imperceptible changes up and down.
Nearest to clunk is light throttle 3rd to 5th when dead cold ( then slips back to 4th if needed), but this disappears after 5km or so.

Hi Babs,
Yeah Rhys did it for me, he also put the heavy duty converter in it,so will see how it goes.
Donrover,
Love to have a 5L50 in it,but I have a rather largeish tax bill this year so cant afford to import one.:(
At least I got more oomph than a normal TD6,so I'm more than happy. :p
cheers
