Visited the Savannah Rail museum the other day, well worth a couple of hours if you are in the area. They have a different approach to a lot of Australian museums in that they have devoted a lot of time and effort to preserving the infrastructure of the old rail depot and not so much in rolling stock which has put them in a position to earn money by doing restoration work for other museums.
The do have a tank engine that they do small trips on within the precinct and take punters for a ride on the turntable as well. The experience there seems to keep the tourists happy and does not cost large amounts of money to keep operating. They only drop the fire from the engine once a month for inspections, the rest of the time it is kept warm.
