Hello, I used one 16mm thickness spacer on the passenger side (below the wiper motor). I cut it out of a piece of 16mm thick MDF using a jigsaw and then I tidied up the outer perimeter with my belt sander. Finally, I tightly wrapped two turns of top quality black electrical tape around the perimeter of the spacer. This gave it an appearance just like a "bought one". I did not fit a spacer to the driver's side because it was not needed. There's plenty of space on that side. I used Pioneer 10cm TS-G1044R speakers ($49 at J.B. HiFi) to replace the original ones and they certainly improved the sound. However, it still wasn't great due to the poor acoustic qualities of the under-mount dash position so I fitted a small pair of boxed Sony speakers to the rear of the vehicle above the rear door. These cost $5 from the local junk store and they delivered a big improvement in the sound quality! Hope this helps, regards, Matthew.

Hello, the dash of my 1994 Defender had the factory speakers so there were already holes in the dash and I didn't have to modify the dash in any way. I simply fitted a 16mm spacer to the replacement left speaker because the new speaker was too deep for the existing hole. The original speakers were very shallow and they gave awful sound. The replacement Pioneers speakers do sound better. Going back to my previous post; I found that I got a big improvement in sound quality by fitting two small boxed speakers to the rear of the cabin. This made a far greater improvement to the sound than the replacement front speakers.

Mud Industries in the UK make a couple of speaker spacers in at least two different thicknesses too.

When I removed my AC I had to pack the passenger side speaker. 1 piece of plastic (PE) bread board and a couple of hole saws. Job done :)
