td5 warmup

Hey guys, whats the opinion on warming up an engine before driving off, I always let it idle for 2 mins before driving off, my mate reckons deseils should be brought up to temp quickly and that you should start it and drive off to get temp up , whats the general consensus

With modern oils and engine it not needed to warm up for
a couple of mins 30secs or so is enough.
What I do is key to position II let it run self check get all
lights that should go out inc heater plugs fuel pump should
also have pressure up then start engine watch oil and
charge light go out adjust seat, mirrors, seatbelt,AC
appropriate sounds double check the sunnies then get rolling.

Its the first few seconds that are the time for wear the oils
nowadays are good enough to leave a protective film on
most surfaces for a long time.

Just start of nice and gentle and you will be fine I hate
to hear numpties crank an engine over then have it scream
to valve bounce.

The same goes for shut down a lot of people do not understand
the their engine is at its hottest level when they shut it off.
Keep the revs down the last 5mins of driving before shut down.

Diesels can't warm up at idle. They need driven. Cold idling isn't good for them.

They need to idle for just long enough for the oil pressure to stabilise, and for the injectors and piston crowns to get just enough warmth in them to keep the combustion chamber sealed up and happy (and really that last one only applies to old school diesels. Then they want to work but they do like to warm up to it so

Start it, put your seat belt on and have at it just dont rev its nipples off till the temperature gauge starts to move, once that starts to happen give it everything.

on cool down times.

with the TD5 unless your labouring the big ends off of it towing in 90% of cases by the time you get off of the highway, up the off ramp and toodle around the suburbs for 2 minutes getting to your driveway park it, take your seat belt off and get your miscelaneous junk back in your hands, wind the windows up its ready to shut down.

Hello frostyblue,

Start it up and drive off.... gently. Listen to the motor and it will tell you by sound and feel as it warms up how hard to push it.
Push it too hard when it's cold and the motor will rattle like hell. Let the head temp come up above 65C and you can feel that the motor can be given a bit more stick.
Once the head temp hits 88C, you know that the motor is warmed up, but better still, you have a good indicator that all the drive-line is up to a good operating temp as well.
The motor is not the only thing that has to come up to operating temperature.

I find with mine. No matter how long you idle for. It want get warm at all. I am sure I have been side tracked at work and mine has been sitting for 10-15min. And the heater is doing nothing. Temp is only at 45c.
As for the other end. As long as the pyro is below 300 I turn it off.
