Hey gents/lasses
While I'm updating our SWI's at work, I'm in the mood to streamline the P38 forum a bit! Having recently done the lift guide, I'd like to go to the next most-often asked question towards the more off-roady types - tyre sizes!
While it won't be the 8,200 word novel of the lift thread, I think we are under-utilising the sticky section of the forum and there's at least 3 people per year asking what the biggest tyre they can fit to their P38 is.
Pull me up if I'm getting too keen, but I feel it's another sticky opportunity.
If you are all for the idea, email me with pictures, your tyre size, etc, under the following headings:
Email addy - kjwager@hotmail.com
NAME:
TYRE BRAND AND NAME: (ie BF Goodrich KM2 Mud Terrain, Bridgestone Desert Dueler 592 All Terrain, etc)
TYRE SIZE: (ie 265/75/16, 255/65/16, etc)
TYRE KM's AND WEAR %: (ie 50,000kms currently and 50% tread remaining)
SUSPENSION: (ie standard springs and shocks, Arnott Gen II and standard shocks, 2" Suspension lift with extended bump stops, 2" lifted coil springs with standard bump stops)
TYRE RUBBING: (ie left rear rubs on articulation, both rears rub when on bump stops, front mud flaps removed, no rubbing, etc)
GENERAL COMMENTS: (ie good wearing tyre, quiet on road, bad road noise, grippy in the mud, would not buy again, etc).
It won't be a spiel, just a quick intro and then I'll doctor up some kind of chart, throw some pics in there and be done!
Cheers
Keithy

Good idea Keith. I know I've answered a few repeats and there is only a few links online which are quite dated, and a little narrow on opinions.
I'll get something to you this week although the pics will be half worn muddies as I don't think I took any when they were new.

That's cool mate! Interested in honest opinions over the life of tyres - even stock tyres if anyone runs a standard size all terrain or muddy.

The brevity in other posts also skims over individual sizes. Eg a 265/75 16 Toyo MT is taller and wider at the tread than a KM2 of the same stated size.

Email sent to 4 of you lucky lads with a first draft. From what I could find using the search function, we have ourselves some good info. You don't have to have a lifted/locked 4wd to comment here, everyone on the P38 forum is welcome to comment.
Cut off date for anyone wishing to submit info is next Wednesday.
Cheers

2" HRA lift kit, adjustable panhard rods (recent addition) all mud flaps and inner guards still in place and intact.
255/65/18 road tyres. Toyo Proxes ST. Grip and steering response is good but noisy compared with the previous Pirelli Sorpion Zero's. No rubbing and very responsive for steering and braking.
265/75/16 Maxxis Big Horn muddies. Noisy, and slow to respond on the bitumen, but let's face it. That's not what they are made for :D. Off the bitumen drop the pressure and they are in their element. Some rubbing was occurring on the Right Hand Rear chassis at full articulation, this has since been corrected with the adjustable panhard rod. Very close to front mud flap but there is still clearance ;).
Previous tyres:
255/65/18 road tyres. Pirelli Sorpion Zero's. No rubbing quiet and very responsive for steering and braking. I had them for around 35,000k's with around 10,000k's of life left in them when I sold them.
225/75/16 Cooper ST all terrains. With the same circumference as the stock tyre but a different aspect ratio they were a reasonable compromise as a touring tyre. Nowhere near as noisy as a mud terrain but with better road manners on the road but nowhere near as good off road. But then compared with the road tyres grip and responsiveness were not as good as the 255/65/18 Toyo Proxes ST's or the Pirelli Scorpion Zero's. Overall though a good compromise if you do mainly bitumen and some occasional off road driving. I just felt they were too skinny.

Gents,
The time has come to add pics to the guide. Please post up pics of your tyres, one of the drivers side square-on, one from the front looking at the drivers side at 45 degrees (so you can see the drivers side and front end at the same time)! No need for 100 pics, maybe 2 to 4 each and I'll pick through them. If you have one with tyres tucked up in the guards that would be good.
I have 2,500 words of info on all tyre sizes from standard right up to 35" (you read that right, no typo).
Cheers

Good idea Keith.
I have standard suspension and have Cooper Discovery ST 255 70 16 on standard rims. No rubbing and fits in the wheel well without a problem.
Got them second hand ( Ex Navara standard wheels I think) and are pretty quiet. Have done about 12K on them and have worn maybe a 1mm. No negatives as yet with them. At 14psi they seem to go ok in the sand.
Haven't tested them too much as yet on much else but I thought they performed well in corrugated and loose gravel roads. Can aqua plane a bit if hitting decent amount of water over the road. Overall acceptable tyres

16-24 mm; was that for the bolt sizes on the front of the chassis?

Ha ha. I haven't even scratched it yet or used the winch in anger so you'd be scoring a good deal lol. Oh no hang on I did use the winch once and that was to rescue a stuck Prado ha ha.
Wait until next Thursday and then you'll have sliders to match :)

Here are some pictures of the BF Goodrich AT 265/65/18's on my 2" lifted Rangey. Reckon the front axle would stand moving forward to make more room for the 33"ers:

They look like 18's! How do you find them off the beaten track?
You might notice the sticky on tyre sizes above if you're interested in contributing?

they are 18's.
old ones were 18's in stock tyre size.
the one's i've just put on are 285/60 R18 Cooper Zeon
the old ones were highway tyres
new ones were on the discovery 2 and had no issues in the bush.
i'll let you know next week how they went. i've literally only put them on an hour ago. still need to make a small incision in the mud guards
contribute what, to where?

See the sticky section in the "P38" forum. There are three topics, one of them is regarding tyre sizes!
Feel free to post your finding and pro/cons on the tyres size and brand up there!
