Temperature high auto trans playing up.

Some time ago I had a problem with the auto trans not wanting to drive up the driveway, I took to using low range to ease the problem.
Then I found the trans reluctant to change up, needed quite some distance before it would change up through the gears.
At other times the trans seemed perfect.

Now, I have come away on a trip, (with a 23' caravan) no problems till we stopped to wait for friends at Port Wakefield. When moving the vehicle during refueling I was back with poor drive, rev it to get anywhere, then when driving only had 1st and 2nd gears for quite some time, drove on and eventually picked up 3rd then 4th eventually TC lock was acquired, great till the motor overheated.

Waited some time, filled the radiator and drove off, back to just 1st and 2nd gears. Same as before down the road all came good.

Now a pattern was emerging, I had noticed the AC fan running at times when arriving home, the motor must have been warmer than normal (let's not talk about the temp gauge here).

It seems to me that if the motor has exceeded it's 'normal' :confused: running temp the computer remembers that and it affects the transmission settings NEXT time the vehicle is started.

When the motor over heats the computer shuts down the fuel and will only allow idle, it also seems to restrict gears, this is fine and saves damage being done, but to remember that it happened and to affect the trans changes later seems odd.

I thank the fact that it shuts down for I am sure I would have done some damage before I noticed the rise in temp.

Could there be any 'truth' in my discovery (no pun intended) of this peculiar situation? It does happen time after time if overheated.

I have checked for leaks, fixed one hose leak, pressure is holding in radiator, no sign of bubbles (head gasket), new water pump, so I am going to get the radiator cleaned out/replaced when I get to Port Lincoln next week, it only seems to get hot when driving at or over 80KPH.

I suspect your auto is on the way out. The engine overheating is a by product of it having to work harder getting the box to do what you want. Have you done a fluid change recently in it?(the auto) When my auto was on the way out it would take longer to move off, sometimes take a while to shift up ofr down, yet othertimes it would be perfect. Problem was the pump.
May not be yours but worth a think.

You have overheated the engine it goes to a default
Reduced power etc.
Will also throw fault codes engine and gearbox.
It will also try and cool itself it switches on the AC fan to
assist cooling it will be on when the ignition is on till you
clear the codes.

With all those overheats and auto issues you need to get
new fluids oils and coolant.
As well as fixing any leaks.

Thanks Schuy1, that was information I didn't want to hear but it could be correct :( what I was really looking for was confirmation or otherwise of the reaction as it appeared to be engine temp related (I certainly hope this is the case not a transmission issue).
My reading of the situation is that after slight extra warming, enough to get the AC fan running, next start showed something that was not apparent previously, locked in low gears for an extended period of time.

Could the computer be remembering it's last running information and holding back the gear change??????

I seem to have proven that, if the motor has had a raised temp (not shown on the gauge) the next start is delivering the queer gear changes.

Like you said, other times it is good. :o

Will get into Peter at Port Lincoln Land Rover next week.

I would think it’s a trans fault causing the engine to overheat, when the trans goes into limp mode you only get 3rd gear and reverse so towing a heavy caravan would cause the trans & engine to overheat.



you need to get a Nanocom or the like hooked up to see what faults you have and do an oil and filter change on the trans to see if there is any metal or clutch material in the pan.

It's not in 'Limp home' mode, like I said it's reluctant to change up from second, come to think of it the reluctance to move off could be it in 3rd. :censored:

Will find out what I can hopefully this week, had the trans serviced not long after I bought the car, and was told "all good, clean and no particles in the pan", had the fluid checked a couple of months ago and was told it looked like it had done a lot of towing, which I believe it previously had done.

Ah well, hope for the best. :angel:

You shouldn't be able to overheat the engine. If the auto and the engine are overheating, it sounds a lot to me like the radiator pack is blocked and neither radiators are cooling. These block in the middle radiator packs, while the outer ones will make it look like they're squeaky clean.

After all that it turned out to be the thermostat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah well now the overheating is cured, just the transmission to go.

Mine sounded like yours when I had a tranny hose connection come off and then after I had fixed that on the side of the road towing my trailer home from camping it was like the clutch was slipping. Not sure if yours is doing that. It was because he transmission fluid was low. Soon as we topped it up was all good again.

If you don't have the slipping type thing disregard everything I said. :)
