Hi,
I have a good friend that wants to buy a a 2005 range rover sport, and asked for advice.
Is it a good year, what engine to go for, what problems?
Or is there a better year for similar money?
Thanks in advance!

You might want to ask this in the RRS section which is grouped in with the Discoverys for some reason.
I would be going for the TDV6 and as 2005 is the first year of productions, improvements were made with each new MY so later is better but you pay more.

Yeah..they need to fix that, its not a disco :banghead:It's 95% Disco3 so that's why they're grouped together.

I knew someone would say that, however using that logic lets group Disco and Range Rover Classic together as im fairly sure the underneaths of certain older discos are 98% Range Rover Classic
Also the new RRS is more than 5% different to the discovery last time i checked maybe even 95% different haha :D so that excuse doesnt really work anymore.
Thirdly, when people that dont think a RRS is a Discovery go to post a question about a RRS it will end up in the wrong spot 95% of the time ;)
Maybe a note at the start of the RRS thread saying "there are certain similaritys between older RRS and the Disco 3's so please also search there aswell" would work.

Basically like Garry said,
07MY saw the engine anciliaries upgraded from euro 3 to euro 4 emissions, if you can call that an upgrade.
Generally 07MY is more reliable, however the oil pump would be its Achilles heel. It appears to be made from a weaker alloy for 07-09MY and it can stress fracture around where the timing belt tensioner is held on. It then snaps off and destroys the engine. Updated pump is available but it's a task to get it on!
In terms of which engine to go for, if I were to buy again, it'd be a TDV8, but the TDV6 is still a very good engine with plenty of pulling power and fabulous fuel economy for such a heavy rig.
08MY saw changes to the interior colour scheme and diagonal stitching on the door trims, there could be other changes.
09MY had some exterior changes - clear indicators and body colour lower strip on the tailgate.
I have an 08MY TDV6 and am very happy with it. Great car. Would buy another one if something should happen to it.

So and this is about the only forums that groups them (RR.net and the UK sites have different sections or sites)- they are different and as shown by the number of new posters who logically think they should be in the RR section not the Disco section.
I ask questions about my RRS and often get responses from D3 people (and offered in good faith) that is wrong - likewise I have on occasion offered advice to a D3 question based on my RRS experience and it is wrong.
There should be a separate RRS section under RR broken down into a L320 and a L949 sections.
Maybe site Admin should poll RRS owners where the section should exist.
This is off topic - sorry

G'Day
I purchased a 2005 (MY 2006) RRS 4.4lt V8 late last year. The vehicle is fantastic. I love it. But, just as with any car, there are some things to look out for.
First and most important I suspect is a solid Service History and general condition. I brought mine with 165k on the clock and a checkered service history. I have spent a fair amount of time and money bringing it up to scratch service-wise. The largest expenses so far have been a new EAS Compressor, a new alternator, and a set of 285/60 R18 Cooper Zeon LTZ's.
IMO, Most Hitachi built EAS Compressors will fail at some stage. Same for the Denso alternator. The good news with the compressor is that LandRover has gone to a new supplier (AMK) and the new ones are much better.
Other smaller things that may need repairing/replacing on the earlier RRS are the Brake Light Switch, and the Diff Breather end. There is a TSB for the diff breather and an updated part. (RRSPORT.CO.UK • View topic - How to change front diff breather valve/filter/vent (http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic30293.html))
I also had the Bluetooth issue where I had to put in the pairing code on my phone (iPhone4) each time I started the car. I got a replacement unit from Bodsy on the Disco3 forums (also via Bluetooth Exchange (http://www.bluetoothexchange.co.uk/)) and it's now all good.
I have recently had more Suspension Fault lights coming up randomly. But I managed to trace the issue to a dodgy left-rear EAS sensor. I found the issue by using the 4Dcan software from Storey Wilson (Range Rover - Sport (http://www.rswsolutions.com/index.php/range-rover-sport)) and a cheap ELM327 ODBII bluetooth adapter from eBay.
I am currently investigating the cause of the infamous driveline shunt at low speeds. ie; slowing down at an intersection, then accelerating away before you come to a complete stop causes a delay in acceleration, and a rather large shunt in the driveline as the auto tranny kicks into gear. I suspect a software issue.
Also on the list is a very random P0441 error. Apparently a small leak in the fuel vapour purge control system.
I recently had a day out in the mud around Narbethong (Vic) with a mate in his VW Amarok. I used to own a Toyota 4Runner, but my RRS is 10 times better in the dirt than the old 4Runner. My mate was very impressed with the RRS as well. He's stopped calling it a pimp mobile now.
I love the power and sound of the V8. I'm not too concerned about the fuel bills at this stage. But I can tell you that there is a marked difference in consumption between City and Highway driving.
I hope this helps.

I agree with garrycol, move it to where it should be with the other Range Rovers!
Much clearer and more sensible.
The new big Range Rover shares the 3 litre diesel and other components, so should it be listed with the Discovery section because it shares parts?
Regards
