2005 TDV6 S 130k towing 1800kg van

Half way between Echuca and Melbourne the disco started ticking vaguely in line with the revs.

Oil not to the top but certainly well within specs, added half a litre anyway. No change.

Of course its raining cats and dogs!

Got to Melbourne with no other issues, car goes fine, fuel economy crap.

Did some online research and the options are;

Tappet not pumping up (usually only at idle, this is right through the rev range)

Bad fuel (possible, got half a tank at Echuca Woolies)

High pressure pump failure (usually only post 2007)

So, full tank of Shell (supposed to be the best) and a load of cleaner cetane improver and off to Canberra we go. Still raining cats and dogs.

3.7 kms short of fuel stop, we run out of fuel. Only 450kms from tank, usually about 650 when towing.

So 60mins later, after a top up from Mr NRMA and a fill up at the aforementioned fuel stop, back on our way to Canberra. Still raining!

Performance still OK. Its hard to truly analyse if there is any change as its STILL RAINING and now its dark and we're about over it.

Get home to Canberra, still no change.

More research and another possibilty pops up.

Sealing washer under fuel injector!

This seems to fit perfectly.

So as soon as it stops raining, I will investigate further.

I know I can't pull the electrical leads of the injectors while the car is running, but if I disconnect one at a time while turned off, and then restart I should be able to find out which one is the culprit.

Any other suggestions.

Hi, had a very similar problem with my td5 and it turned out to be a faulty/broken injector similar km's. Car seemed to perform whilst towing on normal (flat) roads but it became evident when crossing the Great Divide that all was not well. Did drive some distance like that and finished up getting it home and to our local dealer. Good luck

Ytt105,

Send the rain west.

Just started summer again in WA.

Do not what's going on with your beast though.

If it is ticking at idle you could try using a piece of garden hose in one ear and listen right at each injector.

I did the individual injector plug removal trick and there was no change, so doesn't sound like its the injectors.

I changed the oil and filter and found the filter little valve thingy was squashed a bit. Previous investigations had hinted that this could also be the problem.

I haven't driven it since the oil change to see if it has had any effect. (Had to go watch the 'faiders' lose again).

The other possibillity is that there is a leak in the exhaust manifold.

I used the hose trick and can heard it tapping on the drivers side.

Looks like its off to a 'paid professional'.

Any suggestions id Canberra?
