What's the Driving depth for a TD5 through water?

Hey gents.....

On my continuing search for more info on what Disco to get (TD5 vs TDi) I noticed that the ECU is under the bonnet on the Drivers side (from what I saw on Utube) and it got me thinking...... What would be the safe water crossing depth for a TD5 and how water tight are these ECU's that are under the bonnet - Can u drive through Deep water w/o the risk of the ECU getting water and causing a engine shut down?

Is there more than 1 ECU?

The wading depth is stated in the owners manual as 500mm. There is the ECU, SLABS and BCU. Plus an extra module if it's an auto. A tarp or a water crossing bra would be cheap insurance. Assuming you already have a water tight airbox and snorkel.

Thanks for that Rob.....

When going through water that is less than that, (<300mm) would there much chance of the ECU's getting wet? How water tight are they?

Any ECUs can't be considered water tight at all. And the 500mm wading depth is the MAX unprepared wading depth, that is you have just driven up and decide to enter with no vehicle mods at all.
If you fit a water blind (bra) and form a bow wave while crossing you will create a large pocket of air in the engine bay which should keep the delicate components high and dry.
Fitting a snorkel and sealing all the induction system joints will increase the wading depth but you should remove the ECUs and seal them around joins and put silicon grease in the plugs. Also put silicon grease on any other plugs you have. But be careful not to shove grease into the pins just the bodies of the plugs. And do not use Vaseline. Of course many people do not use silicon grease at all and are fine also. But I have with no problems and I like the security.
