RRS & D4 query

Good morning all
I have a query regarding RRS & D4 - it seems that you can pick up a RRS 3.0L for slightly less than a D4 3.0L (2009-2010ish).
Is there any traps or negatives with the RRS vs D4?
I assume the running costs - fuel, insurance is more expensive?
And for towing & beach 4wd... well I feel ;) that maybe the RRS shouldn't be used for this - even though its the same chassis etc - nutty I know but is there any real world why not?
And to throw some fuel on the fire, in real world situations are there any preferences either way?

It would be used for travel to work, then to Straddie, Fraser, etc with some towing.

There is no reason other than the vehicle suiting your purposes i.e. 7 seats or more cargo space.

You might want to fit the slightly larger D4 tyres & you will regain a slight loss in ground clearance.

I faced exactly the same decision 4 months ago when i was looking for a new car, i went with the discovery for practical reasons fit more people and cargo in when needed and just love the look, don't get me wrong the new sport is amazing.

But when it came down to value for money it was the discovery that won it for me all the same features but the amazing space in the back!! Ive picked up washing machines, chairs and other things that would have no chance in a sport haha!!

Thats was my thinking, and as for fuel i have the 8spd auto and consistently get about 9.5L on the highway and i live in a small town with 3000 people so i don't do much town driving to gauge that sorry. But i love the power and go from the engine so we don't really drive for economy.

In terms of overall size, the RRS is 100mm shorter, and has 100mm less wheelbase. It's a little lighter too. It has all the off road trickery the D4 does, so will do everything the D4 can, except fit big loads and the two extra passengers.

My brother just bought a 2008 TDV8 RRS for a lot less money than any used 3.0 D4 he could find. The smaller cargo area wasn't a concern for his usage. Very few RRS with e-diff which he would have liked for towing although only a 2T van anyway.

I had a 2006 RRS V8 Petrol, now I have a 2010 d4 3.0.
While I loved the RRS, I'm happier in the D4, more power more room and more practical for me and the family, the only thing I'm not happy about is the 19" wheel situation but I can live with it untill I can afford the GOE 18" Rims :)

Resale values must have rapidly switched in the last few months as D3/D4s of similar spec to the RRS have always been cheaper on the used car market than the RRS.

Just checked the Red Book price for a 10MY RRS TDV6 and a 10MY D4 TDV6 SE - similar spec levels (yes I know people believe Red Book are crap but using the same for both evaluations)

RRS $55-$61K private sale
D4 $53 - $59K private sale

So it would seem that when comparing with apples with apples the RRS is still a bit more expensive on the used car market.

Im looking at a 2009 RRS for $49000, 112000 kms 3.0L TDV6 - and it seems in good nick for its age.

Didn't realise there was a 100mm length difference but as its only going to be the dogs, they can tuck their tails in.

Still doing homework & about to haggle. Also waiting on log books & I've yet to have Ricks on the Gold Coast check it out. No options on it, the sat nag/reversing camera would have been good but aftermarket can suffice, heck even old fashioned mirrors & Refidex.

Bit premature as I was going to buy in Aug-Oct but it seems a good price & deal - happy to be corrected though.
