have just taken possession of a workshop trailer.

it has body number 565 manufacture date 4/66 on it.

the manufacturers plate is missing on the chassis and so far i have been unable to find a chassis number stamped anywhere.

anyone know what format the chassis numbers were in?

i seem to recall they were 3 of 4 digits but am unsure.

cant find anything on remlr about it.

to register in qld i take it i have to get a vehicle build plate and fit it etc etc before trying to register it?

My same model w/shop trailer had no numbers on the chassis, only on the plate affixed by the manufacturer APM.
I was issued a chassis number by the RTA (NSW) and the mechanic that did the Blue slip stamped the RTA number on the chassis, Regards Frank.

My No.5 has a badly stamped number, mostly illegible, on the lower left front corner of the tub. There is a serial no. on an ID plate riveted to the rear of the tub giving the maker as Govt. Munitions Factory, Maribyrnong. Qld. Transport do not recognise GMF as a maker but did accept the serial no. and the trailer make is "home made".

Edit:- make that Govt. Ordnance Factory.

Thank you for that, the plate is missing in our trailer, I will look to see if there is any stamped numbed in the tub because people have been asking for that.
Even if I cannot find a number there is not doubt that what we have it is a workshop trailer.
Cheers

Chassis # will not be stamped anywhere but on the chassis itself, I searched my 1966 w/shop trailer from head to toe, no chassis # anywhere, serial # on alloy plate on body, RTA would not accept that # and issued me with a chassis #, Regards Frank.

At the back, on the LHS of the number plate mount I can see 4 1/8 holes and marks in the paint were a plate was riveted.
Perhaps the army remove the plates before selling the trailers?

It is probably wise to stamp the actual serial number associated with the body (or associated with the ARN if you know it) into the drawbar before going anywhere near the registry office or inspector.

By doing it before going to the registry you can point it out and it will get recorded as such. Otherwise as many have found out, you will be issued a VIN that will break the link back to its original identity.

It is not illegal to stamp an original chassis number into a vehicle that never had one. It only becomes illegal if you stamp another number to change an identity.

You should probably prepare and paint the whole drawbar after stamping the number so that the number doesn't look like it was done recently.

Chucaro, Chassis #'s are stamped on the CHASSIS, they may be repeated on a detachable plate, BUT if the trailer has a chassis # it will be on a part of the chassis that cannot be removed, Regards Frank.

I have found more information

The contract number that I quoted before is wrong, the correct number is
6015E
Inc, if you trailer is a 1/2 Ton Workshop Trailer, Machinery then it has the same contract number.

Have a look here the descriptions of the trailers and you will get the correct contract number.
You have to scroll down a bit

Army Landrover Trailer Codes

they are the census codes, not the contract codes...

6015e is the basic workshop layout, there are other codes for the specially fitted out trailers for repairing weapons and vehicle servicing etc etc etc.

Contract No: C41 547is what i was referencing..

as mine was built 5/66 it may have another Contract No:

i thought...

I guess that chances are that if our trailer was built in the 11/65 and yours 6 month later and during the some financial year, it was built under the same contract as ours.

AGH.. the joys of owning something unique.I too am struggling to find the chassis number on my 4/71 wksp trailer (to compliment my 4/71 WKSP rover). Its platform no is 792 and the rovers platform no is 818.I have tried cross referencing info on REMLR and also a post on there seeking help, alas no answers as yet.On a positive note, it looks like the trailer will be completly overhauled before the rover(as I strip things back looking for this illusive number).Fortunately for me the trailer has current rego in QLD and will be changed to SA rego soon, using the platform number.

Finally (I believe)I have found my chassis number, after many hours of sanding. It was located approx 12inches from the front stand, behind the front crossmember,on the diagonal brace going to the 2nd crossmember, about 2 inches of the centre column.Chassis number is 61,stamped in approx 10mm stamp.Cross referencing this with REMLR information,I now believe that my trailers ARN is 178-025.The other reason I believe this to be correct is the close proximity of platform body number to my WKSP rover.I am prepared to be corrected should anyone have any other info or pointers.I also hope that this info will/may help others in their quest.

had me in what wasn't right with it till i hooked it up to madge and saw it was sitting nearly 100mm to low

the axle and suspension had been altered.

seems someone put the axle over the springs and modified the shock absorber mounts to suit.

i spent a couple of hours this afternoon putting things right :p

got the axle back under the springs and the trailer riding at the correct height again after removing the altered shock absorber mounts.

now just have to fabricate shock absorber mounts close to what they were originally. but it is sitting as it should now ;)

If you look at images of the No.5 back in the early Inter Mk1/Mk2 trials you will see the trailers axle over spring behind the Command recon.

Perhaps the change in the axle position was to compensate for the raised suspension on later LR models.

Notice the CR had the optional extra LR chaff guards over the mesh grill!

NICE pic!

and good pickup on the spring under axle!

madge is a s2 cr (on parabolics so is a tad higher maybe 25mm when empty than normal) lower when fully loaded.

the spring over / under makes about 110mm difference to the height of the drawbar @ horizontal.

my main concern is i don't like towing trailers with their tails lower than their front as they tend to duck and dive.

got to say i had never seen or heard of it previously so thanks very much for the pic and info!

i notice the trailer looks low aft in the pic but no where near as much as mine did behind madge.

thanks diana

While not original, with an axle over spring configuration, you can make small adjustments in the height of the trailer tail by fabricating longer spring shackles.

yeah i looked at that but it was 70mm out at least...
