Hi there,

I'm considering buying a 2 or 3 year old Discovery 4 most likely a 2011 SE.

I've been poking around the site looking for what I should be keeping an eye out for.... but don't seem to have found a lot.

Is that a good sign?.... or have I somehow missed the "things to be careful of"

Any advice from those more knowledgeable, greatly appreciated.

Mark

Make sure you buy one that still has warranty.

Even if is 2 years & 11 months you can then purchase 2 more years warranty.

The D4 has been out for 3+ years now. I think the lack of common problems, bears testament to the quality of them.

I know there have been some issues, right up to complete motors going, but considering the amount of D4's that have been sold, I think these are in the minority, rather than a time-bomb waiting to go off. Thinking the D2 oil pump bolt here...

But, it is the same when buying any car second hand. Do your research, check for service history, and be comfortable with what you are getting into.

Thanks Sneigy.. I was actually looking around for a mod to fix my fat fingers! ( Can't edit titles myself it appears)

As Chuck pointed out, there is benefit in being able to extend warranty, so I was meaning to write 2011 - 2012...

One day I'll post without a typo maybe :P

You still down at MLR? My D2a I bought from you guys is still going strong.... just thinking its time for an update.

Cheers, Mark

As with all modern vehicles (not just LR) service history is a must in my eyes.
Drive it & listen for clunks, Lower control arms or steering ends. Something to bargain with if your buying privately.

If you want Mark PM me & let me know what you are after exactly & i can see what we have for sale & ket you know. Cant promise anything but can help as much as i can.

All fixed Mr Fat Fingers;)

We have had our 2011 D4 for 3 yrs almost and 86,000Ks, no real problems, faulty height sensor and a gearbox fault fixed by a software update, water leak fixed under warranty, car has been brilliant.

As has been said clunks will be a sign the lower control arms need the bushes replaced, just been through this, 80,000Ks seems to be the norm for this, having said that ours got a hurry up when I hit a big hole, causing them to fail(right hand side only) prematurely.

Thanks Baz.... what would I do without you :)

The more I read.. the more I want one and having driven a 2012 last weekend, all I can say is holy moly they have come a long way in 8 years!

Love my 2a.... but I suspect I'll fall in love with the new one pretty fast when I find it...

My 2a is chipped as well... before I sat in the D4.. I wondered if it would go as hard...... stupid me

180KW & 600Nm vs 120KW and 365Nm......D4's not THAT much heavier...

I know you guys are talking diesels, but I was down at ULR last week, & I was looking (not to buy) at the latest Discovery....VERY nice.
Anyway, I was talking to the lovely Gracy, our saleslady, & she mentioned that she had just sourced a late model (done 12000ks) V8 Petrol Discovery for a client. Asked her how they went, she said "the V8 Disco goes like the clappers"!
Cheers, Pickles.
