Im looking around for a D3 SE diesel. ATs are of interest to me too.
the 255/60 18R range seems limited. There are a lot more sizes in the 17s. A lot of 4WD manufactures have been releasing models in the 17s since the mid 2000's. I suppose more models are now with 18s and so availability will increase.
Ive only destroyed tyres on one occasion and the vehicle was overloaded and road horrendous. Otherwise it has been repairable. I used Goodyear silent armorers on the last trip.

You are best off getting LT rated AT tyres. In the OEM 18 inch size Bridgestone have one.A few threads on here about it,people that have them are pleased with them.
If you go to 17's,there are heaps of options, which is what i have done, using 245/70/17,very close to OEM size.
If you want to go oversize, you can run other brands of tyres in 18's,but they may rub,and the spare will not fit where it should be etc.
Do a search on here, heaps of threads about tyres for D3/4.
Good luck.

I will be installing a duel wheel carrier by kaymar, and a 104 litre fuel tank from ARB, so room for tires will not be a problem.
I'm prepared to buy new rims to suit the tyres that I need no problem with that.
Thanks for the tyres size link and keep the advice coming its good to get advice from the experienced I don't want to make a mistake by purchasing the incorrect tyres setup:)

what's a better size wheel for touring, 17" or 18"? I thought 17s because of increased tyre availability. What's the advantage of 18" wheels?

The biggest advantage is actually being able to fit the wheels to the vehicle. ;)
(Some D3/4s are unable to fit 17" wheels due to their brake size.)

None if you want a robust LT tyre, same or similar diameter to OEM.
But the 18' rims may look better and have a bit more bling, and have a wider footprint. And cost more and not do the mileage of a 17,and not as common.
The 245/70/17 is used on numerous vehicles, including the GX Prado. There are many LT tyre brands in this size.
And as sheerluck has said,17's will only fit the 2.7 D4,not the 3.0l.
All D3's will fit 17's.

The advantage may be determined by what wheel size you have especially now there is a decent legal LT rated AT available.
If you have 18" wheels the 265 60 18 will have 12.5mm less side wall than a 245 70 17.
The other advantage over the 245 70 17 is that your track width is increased albeit only by 10mm - this leads to increased stability both on & off road.
If you had to go and purchase a set of 17's wheels then the advantage is somewhat reduced because of the financial outlay.

17" land rover alloys seem to be rare as.
Keep looking they pop up occasionally.
There was a set on here real cheap recently.
They are often on Fleabay,or gumtree.
You can run BMW 17's as well, but you need to find out more as i don't know much about them.
Got mine from a breaker as they call them,we call them wreckers in the UK.
Worked out a lot cheaper than getting any here at the time, but as said i have seen some cheap sets around.
Yer,Sheerluck is correct,i forgot about the V8 models,they won't fit 17's i think.

The advantage may be determined by what wheel size you have especially now there is a decent legal LT rated AT available.
But it has a load rating of 114,no where near many brands in 245/70/17 that are 120,or 122 which mine are.
In fact the OEM 18' passenger rated pirelli on my D4 were load rated at 112.

When I had the D3 I went to a lot of effort to get 17"s for it because at the time there were no decent legal 18's available.
If I had 18" rims now I would fit BFG's in 265 65 18 - legal, LT & will fit in spare wheel space.

Chuck is talking 65 profile,not 60.
Don't think there are any LT in 265/60/18.
They are definitely available in 265/65/18 in BFG etc.I did read somewhere they may rub,but i could be completely wrong;)
The LT in 18 i was talking about were the Bridgestones, same size as OEM,255/60/18,load rating 114.

I've just been to bob janes it looks like the D697's is the right tyre choice and will also send down one mag for trial fitment. :)
I will inform you all how I go!
Also they offered Grabber SRL tyres a lot cheaper than D697'S, dose anyone know this Grabber brand ( any good)?
cheers

General Grabber are a good tyre however there are better choices in 18".
I had the GG AT on my D4 in 19"
Performed well but have just replaced them with Cooper Zeon LTZ's due to harmonic vibration noise.
I have not heard of the Grabber SRL tyres.
Did they give you specs or sizes?

When getting a repair in Maree I asked him which tyre he rated. Response was Bridgestone dualers. He said any decent with the right tyre pressure was ok. Anyone with experience with Dick Cepek trail country? The load rating is 110T.

I don't think you can get the SRL in 18". Only 17"
I and many others here run General Grabber AT and AT2. I have run both, I currently have AT's. I like them, I have had no punctures in 75,000 km's of varied terrain including beach sand, desert, dirt and gravel, rocks mud bitumen etc. I have also never been stuck anywhere with them despite lots of opportunity. Some find them noisy, I don't. They are good on bitumen including in the wet.
My one comment is that the AT's seem a little soft in the sidewalls and I have a few nicks, cuts and divots in mine which I didn't seem to get on my AT2s. It might just be bad luck. However none of them are deep enough to cause me any serious concern.
I will probably buy D697s next, just because they are LT and not because I am dissatisfied with the Grabbers. Unless you are young regular extreme driving, if you want to save a few dollars and buy GGs I don't think you will be disappointed. But some here disagree with me, mostly on the basis of noise.

Hahaha
I know Lyal well as I used to live just out of Marree. He loves Bridgestones, but to be honest everyone up there has had no issues with the Duelers on their land cruisers. They are a good tyre.
I will probably replace my Cooper AT3s with D697s once they are done.

I just got grabber ATs fitted to my D3.
1000k later, both on and off road, they performed really well. Very happy with them.
Key point for me was that they come in original Tyre size, 255/60 r18.

Just had Bridge stone D697 265 60 r18 fitted to D4 today. Did a lot of searching after the Cooper AT3s let me down.
I believe the Cooper HT are ok if you are not towing and don't do a lot of off road work.
However don't try to claim anything off coopers if you have problems......they dont seem to support customers very well.http://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smilies/angrylock.gif...Cant get any response to my claims

Wonder if anyone saved that excel file /\ noted here, before Greenoval up and left us, it really was very helpful and comprehensive, best i had found for many years ; went looking again as I wanted to check the issues with BFGs KO2 265/65R18s, from my memory they fit the spare slot (maybe?) and only had slight rub on full articulation on a D3 2.7TD

Hi Drizzle
i had the BFG KO2 265/65R18 on my D3, D4(Stolen) and now on my D4 again - great tyre.
You are right but the spare only fits if it’s deflated - not all the way but enough to keep the bead.
Regarding the rubbing I had a little at full turn but I let the rub mark the spot and the heated that general area up with a heat gun and whacked it with a rubber mallet - problem solved 👍
People ask a lot about how it affects the speedo because of the larger circumstance - I found that my Speedo was still accurate with no adjustments - guess they ship from factory with a Slight under reading perhaps for safety.
Cheers.

I have BFG KO2s on my Defender and will stick with them. 65,000km and heaps of tred left. Great in the muddy paddocks we have on our farm, haven’t had any punctures (touch wood) and been on a heap of rocky and sandy tracks. Also seem pretty quiet.
Also liked them enough to put on the wife’s Land Cruiser!

We just got 125000+ trouble-free km out of the Cooper AT3 LT’s on our Prado. It’s helps that we haven’t been doing any serious off-road in the last 25000 km.
Could probably stretch it another 5000 if we didn’t finally have a trip coming up.

Tyre opinions are like a....holes, every ones got one. Here is mine. Ive had 3 Discos now, Kumho, good tyre great traction done at 40K, original Michelins on td5 , great tyre, must have stopped making them because they lasted so long, Coopers, looked good performance great, sidewalls were stabbed to death , tougher AT version noisy as then delaminated on 2 tyres, rubbish. Now have Yokahama AT GO15 on Td5 , quiet, performance fantastic, looks like they will go over the 80K. Originals on the D4 are going well, no off road use just towing but wearing well, might do over 60-70K. When done will switch to the Yokahama AT GO15 in a 19inch rim,(they now make them) Cheers.
