So the time has come to up date the D3.
We currently have a 4.0 V6 My08 D3.
Other than trying for a SDV6 what model year should I be on the look out for?
Not wanting to buy brand new.
Is there a Model Year I should be avoiding in the D4?

Many, many more qualified than me in this regard, but would recommend you have a crack at a diesel with the 3.0l and the 8 speed transmission.

My MY12 with 3 litre and 6 speed is sensational.
Almost 3 years and has performed faultlessly.
Plenty of offroading, plenty of very heavy towing, and plenty of touring with on Offroad camper attached.

Ive got a new MY13 HSE 8spd and love it not sure the noticeable difference between 8 and 6 speed (not ever owning a 6spd) but i know i love the diesel and it brings a smile to my face every time i drive it, i love it!!

I think it came out in MY12 as well but I'm not 100% sure but i think they did an upgrade in 2012 and it came out first then.

8 speed came out in 13. I picked up one of the last MY12's with 6 speed. To be honest i have no regrets in getting the 12 over the 2013. For two extra gears and the money saved on a hse was huge.
Drove both the only thing i did not like about the 8 speed was the dial and not having the traditional transmission shifter. If your not looking for the 8 gears you cannot tell whether you are driving the 8 or the 6 speed, both silky smooth.
The biggest difference you will notice on the D4 is not the transmissions but the 2.7 vs the 3.0l. Plenty of topics however you have to get a 3.0l they are chalk and cheese.

Thank you wasn't quite sure. I don't mind the rotary dial you do get used to it although a shifter wouldn't be bad haha doesn't really bother me. But yes both are amazingly smooth.

Must be good as 2.7 is impressive.

I remember when I went from D2 chipped TD5 to 2.7 D3 thinking not that much more power.
The other way round when I went from 2.7 to 3.0 SDV6.

Hi Mate,
I've got both a MY10 and a MY13 D4. Both 3.0L SEs and both have a few extra options.
The HSE D4s have more fruit standard but there are plenty of spec'ed up SEs around. Second-hand I don't think there would be a huge difference between an HSE and SE, especially after a few years ... but I could be wrong.
I find the 8 speed is much smoother but the 6 speed is not rough by any measure either. Granted my MY13 has only done 2K, Vs the almost 90K on my MY10. I find the 8 speed 'punchier' off the mark too. Not sure why as their torque output is identical .... I'm guessing gearing. And again .... the MY10 is no slouch at all.
Beware though, LR have mucked around with the spec level for the SEs over the years, some additions - some subtractions, a couple of examples being Bi-Xenon headlights were standard on the MY10 SEs and are not on MY13. Electric seats are standard on the MY13 but not MY10. Not sure what other years are affected.
I hear the MY10 is probably the best introduction to the D4 range ... affordable, yet still fantastic .... oh, that's right ... I have one for sale .... ooops ....LOL!!! :-)
Happy hunting mate.
Cheers,
Kev.

Well I broke down and bought a new one.
After much deliberation looking at and driving MY13 demo's in both SD and TD I actually couldn't justify the $10K++ price difference so what would any normal person do?
I don't know what a normal person would do because I just bought an MY14 TDV6 with all the options we wanted instead.
End of the day it worked out the same as a demo/used SD that had less options than the TD I have bought.
I must say it is like night and day compared to our 07 D3.
Only real problem is that the wife gets to drive it daily and not me.
Should have it on Friday

Congrats. Even used there is a noticeable price difference btw the 2.7 & 3.0. Is there any difference btw the early and current 3.0, and what are the big differences you found going from a D3 to a D4?
The early D4s are coming down in price, but so are the D3s (one D3 seller agreed to sell me his for $2k6 until he got a better offer - oh well plenty of D3s around). I'm leaning toward a D4 MY11 but the D3s seem good when coming from a 25 yr old 110.

I think you'll find they don't sell the 2.7 any more only the 3.0l in two different states of tune.

.
Driving feel more than anything
8 speed gearbox is like silk
On road handles even better than the D3
Feels more like a refined car in the cabin (seat bolstering etc)
Updated cabin is very nice
on road the suspension has even less roll around corners etc
I had been looking for quite some time thinking etc but hadn't driven one (deliberately) and the moment it took it for a spin I was sunk

Wow mate sounds like an awesome machine nearly as much stuff as the HSE model haha. I'm pretty sure they all come with 19s these days I could be wrong. Jump on the land rover website and check out the configurator might help you a bit. You'll love it they are a beautiful machine!!

Coming from Hi performance cars (Porsche etc) for nearly 3T of vehicle my 3.0L HSE goes like a cut cat. Get it in the torque range when moving and feed on the power (don't trampit) and it pulls like......
Very impressive for a non performance based car.

Mine apparently arrives on the dock at Port Kembla this weekend, so maybe...just maybe I might have it by next weekend.
Like you, my wife & I went for the TDV6, I just couldn't justify the extra $10k like you said. I know the SE goes better, but Im certainly not disappointed with the TD, plus I think we got a ball tearer deal, so Im more than happy with out choice.

That's what I find works best to it just pulls like a train, I try and explain it to my partner but give up and just let her do what she wants haha. Has anyone else ever had the window down and noticed at about 2500 - 2600 rpm the pssssh sound of the turbos switching over???

At least yours made it into the country before they lost it. Mine got lost before it left England.
Somehow though I think our dealer was a little unique in that respect. :)

Ha ha - My subaru I drive daily has more power and torque at the wheels than the Disco has at the flywheel - certainly wasn't bought as a performance car but has plenty for around town, towing and country driving

Wow, that is impressive ... more torque than a 3.0L twin turbo Disco. A quick look at the Subaru website indicates the most powerful WRX STI Premuim as being rated at 407nm (not sure where that's measured). That's about 150nm less than an off the shelf bog standard 2.l litre Merc CDI 250 sedan, which is hardly a racing car and almost 200nm less than an SE Disco.
Yours must be very heavily modified.

A good tune will see a turbo sube put out massive torque. I know someone who has an sti wrx with a dynod 750nm at the wheels - yet it remains very drivable*.
*until some driveline component explodes or his Licence is taken away, whichever occurs first !

Yes, it's always good fun until your drivetrain is sitting on the road next to you ... LOL!!!

In the case of a tuned manual trans Sube it will normally be the clutch sitting on the passenger floor :whistling:
I think 750 was with a couple of mods, but nothing radical. Very tunable out of the box, Subaru are very conservative in their engineering of these motors and leave it too hoons to extract more and pay the price in broken parts or fines or both.
I have a Sube, a Disco and a 21 year old 1.3L Charade (1 owner, Koni suspension, 67kw and 750kg) and the Daihatsu is my favorite performance car - you can do whatever you like, nothing ever breaks and you are rarely flouting the law ... but I have a great time with that car ... and it is such a pleasure (NVH) to get into one of the others after a drive of the Charade hahaha !

Its all relative, yes had WRX's as well. Its just the way the D4 delivers its power against its weight range. My old man has an XF Jag with teh same engine, and it delivers its power differently than the D4.
The suby's are quick, but they do not weight 3T and deliver their power up front with max torque from memory much higher in the rev range. I would suggest the D4's max torque is delivered low down.
aside from euro performance, I have had a 540HP (atw) XR6turbo, that had over700nm of torque. mind you I sheered the diff off and went through 3 gearboxes....

Quick one to Dwellingup with 5 families.
Only did one short 4WD.
Wow this thing tows like a dream and of course handles anything thrown at it so easily.
A couple of happy snaps of the car, camper trailer and the kids watching movies at the campsite - that image is 3m wide coming from a rechargable LED pico projector that is about 40mm cube - 4m distance from screen

one more thing to add - the reversing camera if anyone is umming and ahhing about it and they tow anything - buy it!!
It has a setting for hooking up a trailer that gives you a single yellow line that reacts to the steering input to point you at the hitch and then zooms in when you get close so you can see the hitch and towball!!!
The arguments it saved on the weekend was worth every single cent!!!
Trailer hooked up 1st time every time on uneven ground with zero input from my lovely wife
