Well did an oil change and 150kms later as I pull up at the gate I notice a rattle, tentatively slot transfer into neutral and main into 5...... and yep its rattling like ol Peter Allen's castanets going to Rio!:o GRRR! just on 330 odd kms, never been touched , Lots of heavy work, trailer towing,so I cant complain really I suppose.
Mates Hilux he got at the same time went through 2 before warranty ended and another after that! lol Funny thing is there was no signs on the drain magnet, apart from the usual fine black stuff.

Id say thats a pretty good run considerig guys on here having to rebuild them at 100k km. Im also at 330k km and tow most days. Mine is just getting sticky to go into 4th either up or down. I have another on the bench that I am rebuilding.

87County, I have always used the Dex111 castrol, 20000 changes. I never use 5 for towing unless its down hill or flat or very light loading.
Yep I am not complaining as I do appear to have had a good run with it. And all the doomsayers here predicted I would be rebuilding 1 a year!:D With the time I got out of it I do not think it is worth me getting an Ashcroft 1! Another 300kms will see it or me out! :D

as you say, with the workout you've given it it's probably not too bad :)

Are you going to rebuild it?

I got Ashcrofts to supply me a rear output housing with new oil pump, bearing upgrade and seal all installed (along with a rebuild kit and some shims). I think this is a good option for those rebuilding as the OEM rear layshaft bearings are going to run out (no longer made).

AhHa, now that sounds like a good idea! I never thought along those lines, was only thinking a complete box. And yes Im am going to rebuild it myself.
If you dont mind what was the approx cost of the housing and bits? I see the pump and rebuild kit itself is quite reasonable from them.

If I have it right, it looks like it was 252 pounds for:

Rear extension housing
HD bearing upgrade (which is both lay and mainshaft)
Oil pump
seal

Of coarse things change and best to contact Ashcroft directly. They are always extremely helpful.

Another thing to consider, If you get the HD upgrade and get a full rebuild kit, you may want to ask Ashcrofts to remove the Lay and Main shaft end bearings from the kit that have been HD upgraded. I just opened my kit and they are there. I did not even think about it (Doh!)

They may reduce the price of the full rebuild kit if you don't need them? And it leaves them some more of the discontinued OEM RHP bearings.

What actually happens to them, as I'm starting to get concerned about mine... Are there any other symptoms that you experienced besides the rattle? Mine is a bit rattly- but it has never been difficult to get in or out of gear. Sometimes it does have a rattle on startup but goes away if you knock the gearstick.

Thanks for that uninformed, Ill zip an email away and see what they say :)

Felix, It was not doing much at all to say it was on the way out. I had a minor vibe at 100kmh that I thought was a uni-joint, and there were no unusual metal particulate matter in the oil change at all' It was after the oil change that I noticed the noise and followed on from there.

Are you sure it is a death rattle and not just a run of the mill R380 rattle? I changed the clutch which had the box rattling at idle when it didnt at all prior. They are a rattly box, even Ashcroft comfirm that on their site.

Drove mine the other day without the transmission tunnel and it was almost unbearable. The noise was astonishing.

Done that myself (after rebuilding the gearbox and taking it for a few test drives before putting the tunnel back in). A surprising amount of heat comes out of there too...

Am pretty sure its "The Rattle" was not there b4 , always been a nice box, quiet...ish. Just been getting a bit noisy over the last few 1000kms. And yes they do run warm! Mine sits on 85C unloaded, runs up to 95c loaded on the highway.
