View Full Version : Puma engine fan hub pulley bearing

I was checking the idler pulley bearings on the 130 today whilst installing a new fan belt. 2 of the idler pulley bearings were a bit noisy and had some slack when rocking them, so I decided it would be a good idea to renew them prior to heading north.
Got a price on the large pulley, the one to which the fan actually mounts. Turns out it is sold as an assembly which includes the whole big cast plate across the front of the engine, to which the other idlers are mounted, LR price is $530 plus GST. This is a ridiculous sum of money to renew what is no doubt a simple roller bearing, or a 2 row roller bearing maybe, surely worth no more than $50 from a bearing supplier. Has anyone dismantled this assembly and learned anything about the bearing and the possibility of replacing it?
The small idler to the left of the fan pulley is also sus, but at $100 I have ordered this from LR.

That's a td5, the 2.4tdci (Puma) engine looks completely different, although possibly similar in principle. On the Puma engine, the plate to which this pulley (and 2 other idlers) is mounted can be unbolted from the front of the engine. If no-one else has yet undertaken this, I'll try to find time to take the plate off the engine and investigate the assembly.

G'day POD, any progress on the bearing front?
Mine has a squeal at start up in one of the bearings and thought it is time to change them all (and a new belt). $500+ does seem like a lot of money for a couple of bearings.

cheers

Haven't taken them off yet, I have to replace the radiator so will do this job at the same time, at present I'm trying to source a radiator.

Why are you changing the rad???

It has a tiny hole in the core, where the edge of the shroud has been rubbing on it. Just enough to make a stain the red colour of the coolant, I pressure-cleaned it last week and the stain returned. Best advice has been that a repair to these aluminium cores is not altogether reliable, so I'll be dropping a new radiator in rather than risking it on a trip that will see us in some very remote areas. I've just purchased a new radiator in between these 2 posts, should be able to get to all this sometime next week when the rad arrives.

I have completed the job of replacing the bearing in the fan pulley; have created a new post in 'projects and tutorials' that details the process and gives the required info to source a replacement bearing.
