Ok so do we wave to each other? I mean D3/4/RRS on the road? I thought it was a Defender thing - not taking anything away from it, I actually think it is awesome.
I was driving to Murrumbateman, from Canberra, yesterday arvo in my D3 and I spotted a brand new White D4, with a LR bar, coming the other way Nd before I knew it he waved. I felt embarrassed as I had only responded after he passed.. it could be the previous owner of my car however.
By the way, I love the VIP access for Land Rovers at Brumbies matches at GIO Stadium. Tried it yesterday. Awesome.

Most D3/D4s are being driven by soccer mums who don't know what brand of car they are even driving so I no longer wave - little point.

I've been giving it a go with hit and miss results. The only guaranteed hit, is my wife laughing when I don't get a wave back ;)
Agree with country yes, city not so much.
Will keep putting out there in-spite/because of, the wife's chuckling.

I have kept an eye out for fellow LR drivers since taking delivery of my first LR late last November after reading a similar thread before purchase. City experience only, but not a hint of recognition let alone a wave or raising a finger or two off the steering wheel. Most seem to be staring straight ahead. :(

Similar experiences. In the country pretty good results, but way out there it doesn't matter what make you drive, you can get a wave.
City have tried it with deefers but most will not recognize that a a Disco is a real Land Rover and won't return, and most Disco drivers don't get it either but some times if you see one with some mods you can get a return.

I get mixed results in the city... but pretty good "return" wave rate in the country... maybe if more people waved to each other the world would be a better place... maybe...:)

City,country,series,Rangie Vogue,Disco 1234, Freelander, Evoque, I figure it can't hurt to show a little friendship anywhere anytime.:D
Having just moved back to Sydney after years of country life & touring I reckon the city folk could use all the friendliness they can get;)

Over the past few weeks I have driven Sydney to Armidale and back and then Sydney to Tweed Heads and back meaning the best part of 2,500km i think.
I think I waved at pretty much every LR I passed. I think I got 2 waves back.
My wife and kids think it is a bit sad but it gives me a laugh and hopefully like the original poster gives the other drivers the impetus to start to wave as well.

As a relatively new RRS owner (new owner of an older RRS ;)) I tried the wave at every Landy I passed whilst in the Vic NE during summer.
Not one! Not a single one over the space of 10 days. The wife and kids had a ball laughing at me.
I remember when my Dad got his first Pajero and there were waves all over the place. Stupid Pajero's. I owned one once. I hated it. People reckon Land Rovers are unreliable! Own a Pajero. That's pain right there. Not to mention the name translating in Spanish to a certain pass-time.
Still, it's not going to put me off. I'm heading to the Snowy Mountains in a few weeks and I'll be waving at every Landy I see on the trip.

I wave when I realize its a landy. Was down at beachport for new year and got waves from almost all d1's and d2's about 7 or so, not one from a d3 or d4 (didn't see any defenders). Personally I think you'll get a wave from an enthusiast, someone who loves and works on their landy. Still doesn't hurt to wave!:D

Agreed, I wave all the time.
Country - Just about everyone waves. :D
But in the burbs, the return rate is definitely higher from those with more obvious off road use.
Much of the soccer mum crowd are doing well to notice you are there ...let alone identify another Land Rover

As a Defender driver :D I always wave at all models of Landies, as others have said, much to the amusement of my partner. Sometimes it gets a responce :D, sometimes it does'nt :(. But you never know just who you might meet, or where it might lead you in the long run, and it could all be because of just raising an acknowledging finger. ;)
I've only had one good wave from a D4,,,, thanks Mike (Tombie). :D
But at Mt Gambier the other day, we spoke with a D4 enthusiast, hopefully soon to get a bit more involved with the forum here :D
The more you wave, the more the rest of us will get back as well, and as said previously, "smiles are free".
Quite a few D3-4/RR owners must get quite a shock when my ugly mug starts waving at them at the lights and passing etc ,,, but I wont stop,,,,

Always wave at other LRs in the country... City you just get weird looks. RRS is even more soccor mum stigma'd than the D3/D4!
I was pleased when another white RRS driver waved at me, for a change I wasn't the initiator of the wave...

Small wave to D3/D4 with hand lifted slightly off the top of the steering wheel. Would be classed as a friendly, but 'mimimum efffort' wave.....
Woudn't waste the effort in the city but will add wave to all Discovery's going forward from now....

Just did the round trip from Adelaide to Sydney over Easter.
Didn't see too many Landies of any sort on the country roads, but waved to all of those that I did see.
Grand total of return waves = 0. Thats zero, zilch, nada, nothing.
I got a better response from the truckies.
Even had a FFRR give me the death stare, like how dare I even LOOK as his automobile.
Best one I ever got was about 100m from home. We were leaving in the D2 and another one exactly the same came around the corner. We both waved, at the same time, and SWMBO asked who that was. Dunno, but he drives a great car. :D

I spent Easter through to the ANZAC day LWE down at the south coast, I got about 75% return rate on the wave while there from Defender, D2 and D4 drivers. Had a hard time getting anyone in a RR to respond but that's no surprise!
Long live the Landy Wave!!:D

Related to the wave I guess is bumping into another forum member whilst traveling. Had the pleasure of meeting Redback ( Baz ), wife and daughter at Arkaroola a few days ago. We had been doing the self drive 4wd route on the property and they noticed we had a blown out spare on the roof ( actually the spare spare ) . Next day they kindly let us follow them to Copley so we could buy another tyre before continuing on to the Oodnadatta Track and Uluru. So far have seen more Landies that expected and waves from all but Baz's offer of an escort was much appreciated and also nice to chat to someone else on the UHF than my wife ( especially as our hi line audio died the day we left ). Baz an update for you we are able to buy a replacement rim in Alice next week. Will be praying to the wheel and tyre gods for the rest of the trip. The trailer park lights turned out to just be a blown fuse so all works as tested pre-trip.

And, unfortunately, as other poster's have commented, she also fails to recognize other Landrovers on the road when she is driving, so I would guarantee that she would not return a wave..... :(

I try to wave to all LR owners and have only ever had one response, which was from a D2 driver near my house! My son also waves in his D1, with similar results.
I was surprised to see a few local D3's and D4's at Alice Springs when I was passing through last year. More there than I saw on the rest of the trip to Darwin and back. No one waved though!
Apart from Disco drivers, I wave to campers and caravaners when I am on the road in my camper trailer or caravan. You get almost 100% return waves with this group.

In the city these would need to be targetted waves. I find when touring a wave is a lot more common. I have had one other d4 driver start a conversation after passing on the UHF on Kings Way actually helped me out as I had missed my turn. Otherwise conversations at rest stops and servos and camp sites are great and I have found most d4 owners will strike up a conversation and why not we have all seen the light and every owner I meet seems to have the permagrin.
I'll need to keep an eye out for waves as I am near Mac Uni and I think I know of the car you are referring to is it white by any chance?

No it was a dark colour, can't remember exactly what colour.
Also tried a Defender this morning. Nothing, also pulled up at lights next to a white D4, looked across and was gong to try a nod or a wave but I think he deliberately avoided looking my way.

Hope it wasn't me.:( I usually notice Discos, especially modded ones.
I'll always wave at a modded Disco or any Defender or Series around town, but otherwise don't bother anymore. Try and wave at every Landy out of town though.
We've all got to keep this up. One day we'll pass each other and finally get a wave returned.

I had better responses in my D3, but it was still an enthusiast car back then :D
Now in my D4 I wave to any series Disco, and all Defenders - I have better responses from D1, D2 and Defenders than I do D3's and D4's.
Even when I know there is a soccer mum driving a D4 I wave - because that's the rules.
98% of RR drivers got the car because they thought it would make them look important, so they won't want to associate with riffraff in Disco's ;)

During two weeks touring from Sydney to Melrose (for the Land rover show, lots of waves around there:D), on up through the Flinders to Arkaroola, across to Cameron Corner and back to Sydney via Broken Hill , Menindee, Ivanhoe and Parkes. I waved to Land Rovers of all persuasions, even got replies from RRs and Defenders. Also plenty of waves and replies from other makes. Enjoyed driving it, much better than the Ewok loaner I had last time, that had dangerous lag.

You've done well getting a wave from any Landrover on that run. I drive it regularly and have pretty well given up - unless it's another D4 that's obviously been set up for touring (I sometimes get a return wave from them).
I get more waves from Jeeps and Toyotas on that run than I do from Landrovers - and NEVER from the many Defender steerers you come across out there. ;)

From Sydney to Canberra then onto Cooma ending up in Cabramurra... Severn full hand off wheel high five style waves dispatched ...... Not a single return :-(

Maybe we should have some kind of demerit point system for confirmed AULRO members who don't wave.
Each failure to wave at other LRs could be 3 demerit points.
When you reach 6 demerit points within any 3 year period, you get an official warning.
If you reach 12 demerit points within any 3 year period, you lose your aulro membership for 3 months, unless you take the 1 point option, where you have to wave at every car on the road for a whole year.
Failure to render assistance to another LR owner who has run into trouble could be 6 demerit points.
Playing Justin Bieber or One Direction on an LR stereo - instant loss of membership for 12 months.

BTW great to catch up with everyone we saw, it was a great day:BigThumb:
Baz.
Hey Baz - you're bound to get a wave from Bundalene. :D
I have it on good authority that Erich & Sheila have been seen waving at Land Rovers from a blue Toyota in Broome ................. ;)

Put a grin on my face for the rest of the day [emoji1]

So, some poor D4 with van driver who was stopped on the Corydon - Normanton road thinks I'm mad.
He was pulled well off the road standing on a mound & looked like he was waiting for the Gulflander to go past when I drove past, hit the horn & waved like mad.:D
Give him his due he did manage to wave back though I was all but past by then.
Most folks in Landies around the Atherton Tablelands probably also think I'm mad! I keep forgetting I'm driving the wife's Delca most the time when home but still wave happily (nearly wrote gaily) to all LR's.

I am sure some defender drivers may think Disco drivers are gay.:wasntme:

98% of RR drivers got the car because they thought it would make them look important, so they won't want to associate with riffraff in Disco's ;)
I will definitely be in your 2% and I agree with others that Country v. City is very noticeable. Another good reason to move to the country.
Listening to Alan Jones this morning, he was bemoaning the lack of manners and personal interaction between people these days. Everyone has an iPhone attached to their ears or their eyes are magnetised to the ground. We need to walk around with our heads up, make eye contact and SMILE! Stress will be relieved and it would keep us out of doctor's waiting rooms or dare I say it, coffins. :censored:
I sold my houseboat last month and while travelling up river all passing boats waved. Perhaps it's a holidays thing. Mind you, we used to sing a song to the hire boats something like "You have to give it back, ha ha."
When towing our caravan, the wave seems to be more prevalent, again maybe a holidays thing, although I towed with a BMW X5 and the non return of waves was very amusing to my wife. Motorhomers seem to have their fingers Super Glued to the steering wheel though.
I always wave to Police and Ambos but that's an "old habits die hard" thing. Return waves are surprisingly high. :)

Got a wave from white MY14 with driving lights this morning in Turramurra. Barely returned it as I was a bit distracted with some driving stuff at the time.
Good to see someone else up this way who waves. Was it anyone on here?
Cheers,

I wave to most Landies but sometimes get strange looks as I'm in the work ute;)
In the country I wave to everyone! Just courtesy to others as I remember dad/mum/uncles etc doing the same back in the day (70's).
Used to get 100% waves back up till 2000 ish. After then more city folk are traveling further (not just fishing folk chasing the magnum Tailor in Carnarvon or big everything on the south coast) and just don't get it.

I wave at modified D1s and D2s regardless. Much more likely to get one back in these. I got a wave from a D3 once was pretty surprised actually.

Have had the D4 since 2010. Use to be not many about, but last week counted 6 D3/D4 from Kurrajong Heights to Richmond. Wife laughs when I wave but got one accidentally while scratching my head last week. (D2). Got a loaner Defender from Bruce Davis while getting a service, never had so many waves. D3/D4 it seems a bit rare, but good when it happens.

I got a return wave from a Series Landy that was in South Bank Brisbane last week - I was surprised because I waved out of habit while driving my wife's Passat!
I always wave at Defenders and series - as I explain to my girls, it's kind of like bowing to the queen, or saluting a senior officer (got teach the next Gen all about respect!)

Well it's finally happened.:)
I got a wave from a black D4 yesterday. First one since I bought my D4 nearly 2 years ago - I do live in Sydney. Managed to overcome my surprise and wave back. Nice feeling :p
