Okay so it seams Mantec snorkel wasn't up to the task of a round australia trip and packed it in just a few days ago.

The plastic where the snorkel is bolted to the bulk head has cracked quite badly.
I know I can probably get it plastic welded but I'm a little unsure how long it will last if I go down that road.

I thought a better solution would be to replace the plastic section of the snorkel with another material? Stainless steel pop into mind first. It's pretty much a straight section of pipe apart from the 30ish degre bend at the top to make the snorkel head sit on level.
Is it possible to bend stainless steel pipe of this diamiter like this? And will stainless be price effective?

Just thought I would run it by the brains trust at aulro and see what they thought.

Have a look at the pics I have attached and see what you think by best option would be.

Note: the snorkel is about 77mm at each end where it goes into the rubber flex hose at the bottom and where the snorkel head fits on at the top

3 inch exhaust pipe will do the trick. Rattle can black once it is fabbed up and the job is done.

You could get a piece of stainless pipe bent by an exhaust place, then get a bracket tig welded to the edge. Shouldn't cost too much, check out LowRanger's snorkel.

I just fitted a Safari SS525HF. it was 3" both ends. It seems pretty robust. New old stock - $260 incl postage.

Not sure that qualifies as "on the cheap"

Going down the exaust tube road.

Will let you know how I go.

I know mild steel tube might seem cheaper. But more time fabricating mounting points at each end, then powder coating. See how you go.

so... got an exhaust shop to bend me up a piece of pipe.

cost me $100 bucks so it kinda wasn't cheap but it was cheaper then buying a new snorkel I guess.

It's dam ugly though :( I don't know what they did but the exhaust shop I used did a crap job.
It should last longer then the plastic one did at least...

I know name and shame isn't really the done thing but if they put out work like this they deserve it.
So what ever you do... They are utterly useless.

I would also like to thank Nugget for letting me service the 130 at his place.

sorry forgot to rotate the pics but it's not worth fixing it up...

Name and Shame rules are there for a reason...

How would you feel if this fantastic site was shut down due to pending legal action?

I fronted the shop this morning and spoke to the owner as I felt bad for having refered Benz to them.

The owner said it was acceptable....enough said! I have already relayed the story to numerous other local business owners this morning. I think it is only fair that others understand what this business believes is acceptable.

No idea that was possible. Guess I forgot it was an aulro rule and not just a guideline.
I look at alot of reveiw sites (they are pretty handy while traveling) and people on there are ruthless, maybe it rubbed off on me.

Maybe I should have just simply stated "these guys" bent me up some pipe and it looked like this? Not "don't go to this shop" for example.

Anyway it's my bad and I will cop the points.

Will be up the cape in June. Looking forward to fording some rivers :D
Hopefully those parks open up in time

that sort of work seems about on par with most exhaust shops.... welding quality is another one they seem to lack

Exactly... Out of sight out of mind under a vehicle...

Best place for this sort of work is a fabrication shop... And use mandrel bends tig welded and ground (if desired) to make a smooth looking unit.

They have plenty of nice smooth pipes on display in their shop though, no creases in those.

haha maybe they are the ones they order in?

oh well, it's just character I suppose. Bit like the dents, scratches, oil and water leaks.... all part of being a land rover  or should that be :(? or even ? hopefully it's not :dbcry: too often

My local exhaust place does very good bends. They made up a number of snorkels for a local LR mechanic based on my snorkel.
