Hi Fellas (fellettes) I've popped over from the D1 forum to ask a question. I am very tempted by an upgrade to a Td5, and I have found a nice looking one locally. 180,000kms, base model 03 MY, but has had rear seats installed making it a 7 seater. Original stereo, air bag suspension in rear (may have been retro fitted with seats). I am wondering what to offer as I think the vendor is asking too much?
I would appreciate any ideas - or should I just follow redbook?

What's he asking?
Price range from $6k - $20k
Too many variables
Check for service history and the usual problems, all of which are well documented in this forum

Second owner, always garaged, looks good, full service history asking $17,990. Redbook says $13,500-$16,100 expecting 150-250,000kms, not sure of problems yet, mechanical inspection in next few days

I've yet to see a car priced in line with what Redbook says. They must exist though....

There is about to be an apparently goodun Perth D2 TD5 red 7 seater/rear aircon put up for sale in about a fortnight or so. I think he was talking about $7K because he got it cheap - don't know kms.

Just had a quick check on carsales ... seems about right to me (for a dealer price)
Check the service history!

Great - except it's a private sale! Plus I doubt anyone pays what the dealer advertises a vehicle for!

What rear suspension does it have then? SLS or coil springs?
Personally I'd keep an eye out for one with SLS and ACE as features. They're great!

It has air bags which I think were retro-fitted with the third row seats, and it has ACE, I think, too. Both of those seem to be potentially problematic (they may be nice, but most people seem to rip them out when/if they become unreliable.

Most people are fools.
There are plenty of tricks to make them reliable and they are definitely worth keeping. Maybe reliable isn't the right word but band aids that mean you'll still get home if on the odd chance either fail. Like 4mm hose with schrader valves (normal tyre valves) for the SLS and a spare bag. Shorter belt for the ACE. Just 4 more things to carry if you have ACE and SLS.

Never had ACE on mine, so cant comment, but as far as the SLS is concerned, it is not problematic.
Yes, the airbags will need replacement at some point, and the sensor arms may also need doing. If the compressor goes, it may be possible to re-build it, or replace it with an after market type if you so desire.
But, with that said, how long do a set of shock absorbers & springs last?
What happens when you throw 100 kg's into the back of a D2 with springs? It sags. With air suspension? It rises to the occasion, and carries on as normal.
If you have springs, and ground the bum while off road, you start digging. With air, you push the button, let is rise up, and proceed upon your merry way.
If the air suspension systems were an issue, LR wouldn't persist with it.... but they have. ;)

SLS is like Viagra for a Disco. No matter how much weight she puts on, it always stays up.:p

Hmm, had a pre-purchase inspection done, car needs $5000 of work done, some of which is roadworthy stuff, but much of which, like new front brakes, new clutch, shocks, engine mounts will need attention in the very near future. Looks like I'll have a bit of negotiating to do! Anyone care to suggest what their offer would be?

Sounds like what I bought. My suggestion is to look elsewhere. Mine had full service records from 3 different LR dealers over it's life but still ended up having a ton of issues. I would think that if it had been serviced and maintained properly then brakes at least should be good. If there is $5000 worth of stuff that needs fixing for rego then there is possibly $5000 more to make it reliable. If the clutch and brakes have not been maintained then how often has the diff and gearbox oil been changed. If the shocks are gone, what about the springs.
Just my opionion and I was someone who got stung with a badly maintained Disco. Something simple like mine was running Glycol coolant and I changed it back to OAT. OAT coolant loves to leak through every possible hose. Changing the coolant was easy, fixing all the leaks after I changed the coolant was not.
Happy Days.
