View Full Version : Engine Disabled. Press Remote

I've been using the 1996 p38 as a daily drive for the last couple of weeks (and loving it :D) whilst my sister in law has borrowed my work car (long story). Today I had difficulty getting the remote to lock the car, but after a few attempts it worked. That turned out to be the least of my problems! When I returned the remote did not want to unlock the doors. I was still able to get into the car using the key but of course up pops a message "Engine Disabled. Press Remote". Regardless of when or where the unlock was pressed (inside the cabin or outside near the petrol flap) the "Engine Disabled. Press Remote" was not going to go away. Fortunately my wife works not far from where the Rangie had become disabled so I was able to borrow her car and head home for the 2nd key. Pushed the unlock on the 2nd key and a happy ending, I've got a mobile Rangie again. I'll wait until I get home to try the resynchronisation of the dodgy key! A rater scary thought if I'm out bush! I will make a habit of carrying the 2nd key as a backup when heading off road from here on in.

how long since you've changed the battery in the "dodgy" remote?

Gary does your car have the EKA code function? I work in Telephone exchanges and there are a couple I go to that will guarantee the scenario you just suffered. I use the EKA code to sort thing out. I Wonder what Telsta pumps out of the multitude of aerials at their sites.

Hoges, the battery is approx 6 months old. I normally use this key as my backup so very little use. The LED could be seen flashing as the buttons were pushed trying to lock/unlock the car. This morning I picked up this key from the key rack instead of the older key. Prior to this scenario it had worked fine?

Wayne, as far as I am aware I do not have a EKA code. In the owners handbook has a sticker placed on by the dealer that specifically states that this is not applicable for the Australian market. Where I was parked there were no visible towers in the immediate area (Osborne Park, Super A Mart car park). Strange though that the 2nd key worked without a problem?

They could be the "same" key... in which case you need to re-sync each time you swap keys. It's what happened to me when I ordered the correct second key from the UK...but they cloned Key 1. I read somewhere that everybody now gets "key #1" when they order a spare...

Gary,
EKA code resides in BECM next time you get it connected to Rovacom or similar find out your code & memorise it or write it down somewhere in vehicle. Sounds like you may need it in future I use mine at least once a month. Depends where you park and what towers/ security systems are close by. Just wish someone could come up with way of reprogramming or altering frequency of the reciever & fobs so this was not an issue anymore!
Can be frustrating at times.

i can reprograme the becm so the car can be remobilised just by unlocking the drivers door with the key, even if it was locked with the remote.

So just to be clear rupert are you saying you can reprogramme it so it will work with either the key or remote for both locking & unlocking & does this also still set immobiliser for security in both of these options?
thanks Martin

yes, alarm and immobiliser are activated and deactivated with remote and or key in drivers door.

Pretty sure mine has had this done. I have never had to do an EKA code entry.

Rupert,
I'm presuming you need the BECM sent to you to do the reprogramming? How much $$$ to have the reprogramming done?

it should cost about $140+ postage. if possible please just send the bottom (logic) board from inside the becm.

Yesterday, I had the Engine Disabled message come up again when the key fob did not unlock the door. Having the 2nd fob made no difference. It too did not work. Despite my owners manual having a sticker on it advising that the EKA code was not available on Australian models I thought I would give the local LR dealer a call to see if there was in fact an EKA available for the vehicle. A big thanks to Matt in Barbagllo spare parts who was able to give me the code after I provided the last six digits of the chassis number;). Entered the code and I'm mobile again :D.

This thread prompted me to look at my owners manual and right there inside the cover is a "key code". But its only 3 digits. Aren't they supposed to be four?

Sean

Yep, mine has 4 numbers, and looking at the instructions it loks like 4 numbers are expected. A quick phone call to a LR dealer should be able to resolve it ;)

Gary a lesson to all, get your EKA code and know how to use it.

Hi

This page has a lot on the subject and I have used the generic 1515 code successfully on my P38

Security and Alarm System Operation & Diagnosis on Range Rover 4.0/4.6/P38A (http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/becm/alarm.html)

Thanks Steve

An interesting bit of reading!

Hopefully I won't have to use the code again. But at least I know it works!

My latest problem is a failed fuel pump :(. I'm about to cut the access hole in the floor ready to replace the pump to be replaced.
