Go to Settings, More Settings, Tethering and Portable Hotspot, slide the Portable Wi-Fi switch, press on where it says Portable Wi-Fi and follow the instructions.
Hopefully that works. Been using the SII as a tether for my Lappy for nigh on two years now.

Yeah I was doing it for my lappy the other day when I was having the data cable relocated. Works well.
If you are using it for adesktop PC (or any for that matter) you'll need to ensure the PC has wirelss capability of course.

Once you establish the mobile device as a hotspot (name it appropriately and use the usual wifi precautions as you'd do on a home network) your PC/Laptop will see it as a wireless access point. Just connect as you would for your home wifi but using the info created in the setup of the mobile point.
IF I could find my phone.....
I could put up screen shots of how and where.

Have you had any issues when connecting the phone via cable to copy files across?
Also when you connect the phone via cable you should have a couple of options on the phone as to why you are connecting it (should appear in the notification bar) - do you get this?
What model galaxy are you using and what OS?
Cheers,
Dave

Connect the usb lead from the phone to the computer.
Setting, more settings, tethering and portable hotspots, turn usb tethering on.

Yes, that would be helpful. I use my phones as internet modems regularly, and prefer to use the cable rather than the Wi-Fi hotspot (though I can do either).
But the ease of use depends on the OS. I'm running OmniROM 4.4, which (when data is enabled on the phone) automatically connects as a modem when plugged into a PC...

I use it tethered to my laptop and it works fine, though some of the cables can be a bit dodgy. That might be your problem.
Have you downloaded Kies onto your computer ?

Windows 8 and the original galaxy-- GTI9000T(otherwise I probably would have written galaxy 2-3 etc;))
ok,, found tethering,, but the phone wont let me tick it,,
I have 3 options, usb tethering, mobile app and mobile app settings,
the mobile app is ticked and no combo of playing can make it untick,,

Pedro, just checked the wife's phone and it wouldn't connect either.
Until I fiddled with it a bit and now it works.
I tried everything until it worked, these are the last things I tried.
In Usb settings - turn on media player, turn it off again, then turn on Mass Storage.
Next go into Tethering and tick Mobile AP - allow it turn on and when the Mobile AP settings is highlighted turn it off again and exit.
Plug USB cable into computer, then into the phone. The little android fella pops up saying that usb storage is connected.
Bring up the settings screen again and choose Tethering, it is now allowing me to tick the Usb tethering option and all is honky dorey (working for me at least).
I don't know what I did, I can't say that it will work for you but something I did made it work.:p
If all you IT techs are shaking your heads in disbelief spare a thought for all those auto sparkies out there, and we'll not even mention the heart attacks that the mechanics have when they deal with me. :wasntme:
I'm a Boilermaker by trade, If it won't fit using the bigger hammer then the gas axe will make it fit.

Go with the gas axe, I don't think the hammer will do to much.
