Work needed on D2 v8 advice please

Hi, I am a new owner and very green so I hope someone could advise and excuse my lack of knowledge!
I very recently purchased the car and the report non purchase advises some work required:
Rocker cover seal leaking, valley seals leaking and back to back seal leaking.
The first two don't appear to be huge or expensive jobs upon basic investigation (I think)? But I have no idea what the third entails, or if there should be further things I should check.
The vehicle is late 2003 model with approx 150th k's and regular LR servicing.. All on appears good so far.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The first two are pretty simple jobs. But you need to pull a crap load of stuff off to access either so you should do both at the same time and do both rocker gaskets as well. Make sure that you get genuine gaskets as they are softer rubber and seal and last better, same for the valley end seals. You'll also need to change the valley cover gasket as well as it won't be reusable.

I have no idea what a back to back seal is though.

If you allow a weekend you should be fine. There's RAVE CD's available via the link to Dave's shop. Just be careful of the leads. Mark and unplug from the plug end, leave plugged into the coils.

Will get the Rave cd as I see a lot of people's posts refer to it.
Will try to find out what the "back to back seal"'is just in case it would be easier/ all needs to be done together :)

The coils are a pig, painful place to fit them and if you loose a few leads it's a nightmare to work out the placement, routing and pushing them on.

It's not uncommon for the rocker cover bolts to come loose. Try tightening them. You will need a 12 point (double hex) socket. They can be a bit hard to find in the small sizes, most small sockets are hex.

I can't remember if it's 8mm or 9mm.

Thanks guys, will check the rocker cover bolts first and look to order the parts needed, I would have hoped that the LR garage might have checked the bolts rather than just advising we need seals but you never know lol.
As an update found out what back to back seal is; output seal of the gearbox and the transfer case input seal.
Has anyone had experience of changing this and has points to watch out for?

The D2 V8's are very heat sensitive, make sure your rad and hoses are top shelf,
Rocker and valley gaskets are pretty common, but if done right should be a once only thing;)

Change your transmission fluid( or at least find out how long the fluids been in there)

Good choice, D2. "Back to back" seals are changed by removing the transfer case. One seal is on the tfr case input shaft and the other on the main gearbox output shaft. The part number ICV100000, I think. Get Corteco brand seals. While the transfer case is out, replace the intermediate shaft 'o' rings. There is much info on how to (and how not to!) replace much of this stuff, so search the forums for hints.


And as mentioned earlier in the thread, get a RAVE cd from the shop on the banner line above.

Thanks guys for all the info will be tackling this in the next couple of weeks. I can already see plenty of grazed knuckles and probably the odd swear word coming from the garage.
